Its not just you. To me this is CLEARLY his worst album. Everyones taste is different so some will love it and some will hate it. To me AWEFUL!! Same goes for MPLS cd but I really liked Lotusflower. BIG step backwards to me. I have already moved on from 20ten to other things and hopefully he will release another cd soon.

People really are nasty here. The poor guy (or girl) basically asked a decent question. A lot of people are raving about 20Ten and he just doesn't see why but would be interested in hearing some others opinions. I hated Come back in the day and after talking to some people about it I looked at it in a different light and really gave it a chance and I love it now. I've only listened to 20Ten a couple of times and I can see why people are comparing it to older stuff. The sound is there but GetAwayFromMe is right about the lyrics. There's just something missing lyrically since TRC or even Musicology (Wedding Feast excluded).
Sometimes you might be in a certain mood when you first listen to something new. Or it might remind you of a certain time in your life. And you may night enjoy the experience of the album. But if you get someone to tell you why they like the album maybe you can see it differently and maybe just enjoy it. It's okay to change your mind.
Having said all that...20Ten really does suck!!! JUST KIDDING! I kind of like it.

Well then I must not be sexy at all then, because I have tried and tried to like this album. While I'd never consult others to try and convince me to like it, I too had a hard time wrapping myself around it as I usually do with his music. This has only happened to me about two times. First with the whole Lotusflow3r thing, and now 20Ten. Maybe I need to give it time or something. Or let it simmer one fine night while I'm blogging or writing or drawing for fun. It just did not move me.
So OP, it is okay if this album is not your cup of tea. Maybe give it a listen one more time before you decide. But you can't depend on people (especially this bunch...I love y'all and the to-the-point responses....no BS at all. ) to change your mind for you. It doesn't make you any more or less of a fan at all. You can still be a fan or enthusiast and not like certain songs or certain albums....you won't be kicked out of the club.

Why should you like it? I like it for the melodies, much stronger than anything on MPLSound except probably for "Here" and even some of Lotusflower.
I can see why people don't like it; the lyrics are somewhat inaccessible and not really clever when you want to be, and I actually think the production of some of the songs is TOO simple; the MPLSound has layers of subtle snyth work going on, which isn't really happening here. I like the funk/pop grooves though and Laydown is amusing. I'm fairly easy to please when it comes to music though as I'm looking to be entertained not a mind altering experience(though the latter is the case for great music too)
Ok, so read the first short paragraph for why you should like 20ten and not the second At this point in history, we have a choice to make

That pretty much sums it up for me, except I liked Act of GOD the first time I heard it, I like the lyrics and love the tempo. And from the moment I heard Laydown and Lavaux I couldn't stop listening to them. Sticky Like Glue and Compassion were just ok to me, I like them alot better now. Sea of Everything has really grown on me, I find myself singing that all the time! And I still like Beginning Endlessly and Future Soul Song. For me, this ablum is like For You in that every song on the ablum I like, some more than others, but I wouldn't call any of the songs bad. So I am LOVING 20Ten. I also love the millenium music Prince has put out, so these last few ablums are excellent for me! Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Another point, it is a throwback, which is what some people have been begging for, so if you really like the older stuff, then listen to 20Ten a few more times before you throw it away, I"m telling you, those songs really grow on you.
20Ten gets alot more play than some of the 80s cds. One thing that I've noticed, if you listen to it and find at least 1 song that hooks you, then the rest starts to sound better. There are a couple of Prince ablums that I literally only liked 1 song when I first heard it (I won't mention which ablums), so that 1 song kept me coming back and I started to appreciate the other songs on the ablum.
And being a diehard Prince fan, I make myself listen to songs I don't instantly like, a couple more times with different mindsets to see if I really don't like it or just didn't really pay attention the first time. Alot of songs have become my favorite after the 2nd listen (the 1st time I'm usually not paying much attention). I remember when I 1st got Lotusflower, I listened to Elixer just once about 1/2 way and gave up on it. I watched the Tavis show of Prince talking about it a couple times, and decided to give it another shot and listen all the way through while just relaxing. Good idea, the ablum is alot better than I gave it credit for, especially "Kept Woman" which I LOVE and is the 1 song that will always keep me coming back to the cd, and eventually the other songs grow on you....hopefully anyways! [Edited 10/2/10 11:15am] Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

1 man's bitterness, is another man's sweetness...with that being said, this thread reminds me how fortunate Prince fans are to actually be able to critique and compare his various releases...he is given us a lot to meditate on.
'walking in sand' happens to one of my favorite tunes lately...and i dig the way he digs the baritone in with the chorus

In what world are people supposed to convince other people they should like any particular music? Who could possibly care?

I don´t give a rat´s ass if you like it or not

Do you actually like 80s Prince?

Prince is targeting a more mature audience now. Just my opinion, you asked. People who were stuck digging all the cursing, etc. will most likely not like the new music or lyrics. The album is hot, so I figure I'm cool.

pRINCE'S MUSIC IS THE LAST MUSIC iM SELECTIVE ABOUT..ITS THE RADIO PLAYLISTS THAT i AM SELECTIVE WITH..I mean come on..katy perry? beiber? pit bull? that is music to stay away from..Prince is the mainstay...the staple...the meat...the rest is left to the mediocre...he's like AIR..either u love it all or u don't...i feel him..thru and thru...maybe a song here or there that i may not totally dig...but the general flow is ALWAYS good 2 go. ALWAYS. "Its flier to B hungry than fat"

MY 2 Cents
Who says anybody have to LIKE 20TEN? The wonderful thing about music is, that the beauty of it is in the ears of the beholder...
In other words, I love a lot of songs on the album, I listen to it in a way you will never be able to ; because I am different than you. Every artist creates his own world and we are there to go with that flow.. or not... no one is forced to like this album... so, really........ I respect any view on this album, because it is your own TRUTH....... who am I to argue with your believe or opinion about this album?
It would be strange to think that I could convince you of liking the album. It's like loving a person... there is no reason, you just do...... I love the album, why? Thats not important, I just love it. I don't love all albums of Prince, but I started to love some songs that I did not love so much in the beginning. Just like with people. Why? I have no idea. Let's call it the mystery of love
Cheers !! | |
