Annie Christian appreciation thread I have always really found this track to be the darkest and coldest (in terms of emotion) as it relates to Prince songs. With that being said, I really dig this joint the more I listen to it.
Anyone else feeling this song? "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

yes, yes and yes. usually its THE REASON i put Controversy ON! Underrated gem IMO. i believe this track is immensely influential (i think the first few seconds are arguably early techno!) quirky, unexpected, nuanced, complex, and lyrically biting, a very Prince-y song. i love Annie Christian. let me go pull out Controversy now!

You and I are thinking the same thing. I think of it as the early prototype to Something in the Water in terms of arrangement.

This song is hypnotic. The jazzy rock bridge & live the lead guitar work Prince did was brilliant [Edited 10/3/10 6:38am] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Thinking like me. Just heard the song, it's certainly underappreciated.

Agree on all counts, and I would add dark and eerie and innovative to the adjectives

I hate to mess up the love fest for "Annie Christian", but I feel this song along with "Ronnie talk to Russia" messed up the flow of Controversy. True I will admit that "Annie Christian" is a dark and border line SPOOKY, I put it right up there with "There is others here with us" in terms of over all spookdom. With that being said, I feel songs such "Hard to get (81"version)" and the 81/82 version of "Possessed" would've made Controversy a true masterpiece IMO. I have to say that "Annie Christian" is among my least favorite Prince tunes. You can tell when Prince is on some dark shit cuz it definitely shows up in his music... Aaron6ix

Okay, that's a nonsense term. It is not underrated. Everyone on the org loves Controversy.

That is such a badazz guitar solo going on underneath the antimusic madness. The song is so bizarre for the time and section Prince was in at that time imo. Search out the filmed live version (from Houston iirc). Its great! Even the old WB advertising picture of ol Annie is awesome. Prince was really out there with this one.

No they don't maybe the song but not the album. It is rarely mentioned when naming his best albums on here. Its usually SOTT,Lovesexy & Rainbow Children or TGE. N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

i know there are a lot of fan favourites on Controversy and it's probably blasphemous to say this, but i've always thought that "annie christian" is the best song on the album.
it's just hypnotic and downright ghostly. that guitar solo that flows through it is just too damn brilliant.

Annie Christian was the song I listened to the most on that album. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
