Not on me and now that I think about it, it may have been for the festivals that he played. But, he HAS to play some of the hits for those who are seeing him for the first time. Most every artist has to deal with that same thing, but at least he usually changes up the arrangements so it's not the same thing each time. Also, he likes audience participation, so I think that's another reason he plays familiar songs.
He likes audience participation cuz he's tired of singing those same damn songs after 25 years, he just lets the audience sing them! TRUE BLUE |

Shoot me now then. JFC, Ain't nobody paying to hear no damn Larry or Shelby. If I wanted to hear Everyday People I'd take my ass to a Sly and the Family Stone concert.
That's like when you pay for So and So and they have like 3 opening acts. God that pisses me off. Prince esta muerto...

Since this isn't one of those "remember when" concerts, I think he should play all new stuff. If it came out more than say 5-10yrs ago, then don't play it! If he does, then a couple of really BIG hits is ok...I would be totally fine with Purple Rain, Kiss, Let's Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, and 1999.... since I never get tired of hearing them. But I think he should examine the ablums he's put out in the last 10yrs and pick out the best songs from them to play. My ideal setlist of new material added to those 5 oldies would be:
Laydown
Act of GOD
Sea of Everything
Crimson and Clover
4ever
Colonized Mind
Somewhere Here on Earth
Future Baby Mama
Lolita
Satified
Fury
Love
She Loves Me For Me
Baby Knows
I Love You But I Don't Trust You Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol |

I'd also like to add that there would be enough material from the past 6 years that would be sound potent and would be "easy" to play live, without too much attention to details, backing vocals, special sound effects, too-difficult-to-sing-perfectly-live-vocals etc.
A simple, short list, for instance:
Musicology
A Million Days
Life "O" The Party
Call My Name
Cinnamon Girl
On The Couch
Reflection
3121
Lolita
Satisfied
Fury
The Word (acoustic version)
Love (acoustic version)
Get On The Boat
Guitar
Somewhere Here On Earth
The One U Wanna C
Planet Earth
Crimson And Clover
4Ever
Colonized Mind
Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful
Love Like Jazz
Wall Of Berlin
Dreamer
Ol' Skool Company
No More Candy 4 U
Elixer
Beginning Endlessly
Future Soul Song
Sticky Like Glue
Lavaux
Laydown
If that ain't enough to choose from for 3 different, brilliant shows, I really don't know what is.
Hell, I'm gonna make a fantasy set-list now:
Guitar
Planet Earth
Crimson And Clover
Lolita
Lavaux
Musicology
Somewhere Here On Earth
Call My Name
Elixer
Love Like Jazz
Love (acoustic version)
The Word (acoustic version)
Reflection (acoustic version)
Wall Of Berlin
Colonized Mind
A Million Days
Dreamer
Ol' Skool Company
Laydown (15 min. jam)
Wow. I'd so love to see that show. He wouldn't even need horns for that!
I'm down with your lists Dave. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment |

He can have participation on whatever song he likes. I can remeber huge participation with the (then unknown) song P control at a concert in Rotterdam. |

The reality is his audience will prob be made up of 70% fans of old who want to hear hits and 30% fans who have been with him through the last albums as well. A mix of both would need to be present to please everyone and have a successful tour (especially in territories he hasn't played in for a long time).
I suggest:
1. Let's Go Crazy
2. Controversy
3. Raspberry Beret
4. Kiss
5. Boom
6. Love
7. Mountains
8. Act Of God
9. If I was Your Girlfriend
10. Sea Of Everything
11. Thieves In Temple
12. Lavaux
13. Musicology
14. When Doves Cry
15. Sticky Like Glue
16. I would Die 4 U
17. Alphabet St
-----
18. Colonized Mind
19. Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful
20. Around The World In A Day
20. Purple Rain
We can all dream can't we. "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love" |

I doubt that many people at the F1 race will know any songs that are not hits, so I wouldn't expect too many new or obscure songs there for sure. At some of the other stops where he may have more long-time fans, then yes. I'm all for new setlists, but I understand why he has to play the hits. |

Sad, but true! Prince hasn't played a set list full of new songs in over 15 years. I went to the show at Paisley Park in Oct 2009. When he called Larry up on stage for almost a 1/2 hour, I was like... I new it would happen though, Larry was the first MF I saw when I walked up in there. I always preferred Prince's stuff live, mostly, but he just hasn't given the fans the opportunity to hear it that way. TRUE BLUE |

i'd love a concert tour of NOTHING from the 80's ..this from a man who said he's got grooves and grooves up on the shelf yet the same grooves we hear in concert all the damn time since jam of the year. some songs from GB have never been played live and every album after that. the tired argument of "well he has 2 play the hits for the ones that never saw him live" is tiring. if u haven't heard the hits live by now oh well there are places u can go 2 hear them. he should focus on the newer music cause that's how he could generate interest in his music past the 80's. man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81 |

ooooh, 666 views!. Looks like the framework has already been set though with Dr. FBs announcement. I guess the 80/20 rule will apply. Just pray that time isn't wasted with covers. [Edited 9/30/10 15:14pm] |
