well, i think if you grew up in minneapolis you would get it... i really dont think theres any "hidden meaning" ( maybe you did grow up in mpls..i dont know...) but i think that was the place to be back then... where you could be free...and dress how you want... and be different...and it was totally accepted. it aint exactly like that now... but thats how it was back then.
in fact... i wish i could go to what uptown used to be right now...but i think its over now. vi

I have heard that many people believe Uptown is just Princes Idea of what a perfect society would/should be and has nothing to do with our Uptown. This is why he yells out "Uptown" at other locals other then MPLS.

Prince does feel that it is "where U want 2 be" in that it is a great place. but the song is also probably metaphorical (as lovemachine said) 4 what the world should be. he's had several other songs with this recurring theme "All the critics love U in New York(sortive)" and "Calhoun Square BY THE POWER INVESTED IN ME BY GOD ALL NEGATIVITY BOWS

I mentioned this in another thread. I've always thought he saw it as this:

After all, the guy opened his store in the middle of Uptown, and then wrote a very similar song 15 years later about the exact same place (Calhoun Square is in the heart of Uptown). I think the song Uptown is definitely about the place itself. If you lived in MPLS in the 1970s, I think you'd understand. It was simply the place to be back then. By the early '90s, it was just another of the "commercialized" hip places that every city seems to have nowadays, with the standard Urban Outfitters, et al, chain-stores that seem to locate in these places.
