Did you once not like / hate prince ?

Just wondering if anyone who loves his music now once either didnt like it or didnt rate him but something happened to change your mind on him ? . . Interested to know what changed your mind about prince if you were not keen on him before ? . . A song . . A concert . . . Someone turn you on to him ? . . . . . . . . The first time i ever heard prince was 1999 which reached the top 30 in early 1983 in the uk which i thought was a decent tune at the time and i remember seeing a clip of little red corvette on entertainment usa a few months later when it was racing up the us charts at the time and thinking it was a good song and he was a good dancer but it wasnt til i heard when doves cry on the radio the following summer that i got his genius and thats been me ever since . . . So i always liked what i heard . . Just took a while for it to sink in . .

I gave up on him in 1991/1992. Got rid of a lot of my records. I was just DONE with him. I got back on board near the end of 1992, almost 1993 with the prince .

I was a diehard from Purple Rain up until late 1997. The onslaught of Larry Graham had begun. His concerts had become a rehash of the hits, with a few new songs thrown in. Then the release of NPS came, no need to elaborate there! I didn't hate him, but lost most interest in him by that point. I still bought all the new cds and gave them a listen and threw them in with the rest, never to be listened to again. I still went to the major shows he did here, but skipped out on the Paisley Park gigs, except for last years show in October. They had become like an old soul revue show. I have since gotten back into his music. The old stuff, 1996 and prior, with the exception of Crystal Ball.

Is this for real?

I gave up on him on July the 7th 1997 at about a quarter to 6. pm.

Loved him again 2 days after that until today except for 12 minutes on March 2003 but only because I was mad with a toe ache. An ingrown toenail if you know what I mean. dead

My case is the opposite.

Since I got hooked with Parade (I sort of didn't like PR and ATWIAD at first listen) I NEVER jumped off the ship. Not even in his 90s lower points.

However, Prince artistically died for me after the ONA Tour.

I haven't liked an album since Musicology (included).

I really lost the hope that he can release something groundbreaking ever again.

That's why my main concern are boots. I just cannot feel his newer studio stuff.

I've always liked Prince! I Adore him the majority of the time! Had a few "Ugh he annoys me" phases, mainly because either I was mad at something he'd done and was probably more pissed at myself for still actually loving him or because I didn't instantly love a song. The latter being very, very rare.

Usually the thing that gets me back on the bandwagon was a new cd release or seeing a new performance/interview. I've been a bit more annoyed over the last 3yrs, not with music, I love the recent music, but with other things, but have gotten over it. I was a bit annoyed at the beginning of this year, for reasons I will not list, but then the BET awards reminded me of how much I love him and why I'm still a fan all these years. And 20Ten helped. These days its a see-saw...

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

I gave up for a few years after Emancipation. So much talent wasted...

I used to hate him, he was that gay looking bloke that screamed a lot.

A good friend of mine loved his music though and I slowly got drawn in around the time of the Diamonds & Pearls album.

Ironically, that friend no longer likes him. lol

RIP sad

why would I hate or not like the guy? It;'s the music that matters. As far as that goes- not liking it much these days.

Blackbob is asking did nayone initially dislike him and got converted-not another exscuse to say how he lost his way.

My memories are similar to yours Blackbob but I dont remember 1999 on the first UK release. However it was Entertainment USA playing WDC that I first saw Prince and my initial reaction was "Who the hell is that" I loved the song b ut all i could see was shoulder pads and high heels.

Dug his music from the get-go (Dirty Mind being my first exposure to Purplenewwavefunkpunk).

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Never hated or disliked him. I used to be indifferent to him for the longest until I saw him on tour, then I became a huge fan.

"And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ heart

"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always heart

I didn't hate him but, I thought he was just 'weird' and I was like this cat's BLACK !?!?!

LoL ...

Considerin' the circles I used to be apart of, that was the major reason 'why' I wasn't feelin' him. That all changed in 1995/96. Since then I've been Haaaarrrrddddcoooorrreee !!!

LoL

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I didn't care for Prince as a kid. It was MJ or the highway. The only Prince song I ever liked was Batdance, and that was only cause I was REALLY into Batman when the first movie came out (I think I was 6?). The only thing I respected about Prince as a kid was the number of instruments he played (and I was only privy to that info via the cd club my dad was a member of). Flash forward to high school (summer '98) and I started digging Maxwell. A lot of comparisons were made to Prince, so I had to find out how my favorite artist (at the time) stacked against my (new) favorite (Prince). So I stroll to my local library and borrowed Sign O the Times. I was blown away. The first Prince album I bought was New Power Soul (it was released a few days after I borrowed SOTT from the library), so imagine my surprise as I'm about to buy the first Prince cd I see and it just so happens to be the same time as he drops new music. At the time, I thought it (NPS) was a solid album. Until I dove into his prolific catalog. The rest is history. My only regret was not scooping up the vast number of bootlegs my local cd shop carried before they became rarer and rarer.

Almost all bootlegs can be found very easily on the internet, unless you mean you wanted the actual physical copy.
