New fans in the last decade

Just curious if there are new fans of Prince's music from the last decade. Did anyone hear a new song from the last decade by Prince and then bought the album and that started them being a fan? Which song? Which CD?

in fairness-there have been ALOTTA new fans-especially in 2004-man Housequake was swamped almost overnight with newbies asking for this and that which at the time annoyed me as i found it cheeky-

you don't expect to get ALL the good stuff on day one-for free:-o

now-i think its really brilliant young folk appreciate him-though the average age i'd say at the o2-was mid 30's onwards

and

i think-sadly-its mainly in the US only-i don't know a single other P fan in my city-young or older

the nearest is in the next city-and he's older than me-and in a whole 2 cities-2 fans.....

that would've been diffrent a few years ago

lol Actually, there seems to be an influx of very young new orgers in the past couple years. Don't know if they're into their folks' golden oldies collections, or if the newer stuff made them fans.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I became a fan when I was 15 (I'm 19 now) after I caught Purple Rain on TV. I already knew some hit Prince songs like Little Red Corvette and Kiss, but that was about it. I thought it was cool he lived in Minnesota though since thats where I live . The first album I bought was Planet Earth...I only liked about 1/2 of the songs so I didn't listen to much beyond that, and the hits. After Lotus Flow3r and MPLS Sound though I have become a die hard and have been searching out whatever I can get my hands on.

I became a fan in 2003. I don't even recall how or why it happened so sudden. Before I was a diehard MJ and my view of Prince was narrowminded. It's quite amazing actually how invisible he his in the general minds of the public. He takes a lot of research to be truly respected and it's this I think that makes me more appreciative of other artists and styles of music and I'm sure many Prince fans have gained that through him.

Anyway, it wasn't new music that got me started it was three songs on a continuous playlist: 1999, When Doves Cry and The Most Beautiful Girl In The World. Aftet that I bought The Hits from a 2nd hand music shop, then Emancipation, then Purple Rain etc etc. Within a year I had almost all studio releases. When Musicology came out it was a big deal for me because it was my first new experience of a new Prince release. I played the album to death. Still 'Reflection' stands as one my all time faves.

It'd be great to hear other stories... smile

I remember thinking I needed to try listening to Prince, and seeing Musicology in the store. I purchased it, and became a fan after Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance. Now I have All Studio LP's except for 20ten, Two Movies, And even Sign 'O The Times on Vinyl.

It's funny, I am remembering how much I dug that CD. I Don't think it's in my top 15 Prince albums anymore.

Yes, that's what I was trying to get at. If it was new music, or the old stuff that made them become a fan. I'm not going through old posts trying to find out, though. confused

Now that right there is exactly why Prince's stubborn insistence on turning his back on the past and his Warner Bros catalog is completely detrimental to his future as a commercial artist. Warner Bros and the entire 80s is his portfolio. He's damn lucky that WB even cares to keep licensing broadcasts of Purple Rain and I doubt those royalty checks he gets because of it don't get cashed.

So true. I have always wondered about his feelings about situations like this. PR runs on television many times throughout the year and I'm sure he's not turning down any of the checks.

The same could be said about his work being licsened for movies. Wasn't "IWBYL" used in "Are We There Yet?" I'm sure he's not turning down the checks for that, neither is he turning down the checks for "Happy Feet" either.

Well, considering those checks also include his royalties from "Song of the Heart"....
