Current popular artists inspiring Prince..... It's well known who the 'classic' artists are, who have inspired Prince. People like Hendrix, Santana, James Brown blablabla.
But which of the 'new' artists are inspiring Prince? Maybe people like Alicia Keys, Common ... Avril Lavigne? Can you recognize them is his current work? Was maybe Vanessa Mae an inspiration for some music on Xpectation? What's your opinion on this? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Personally, I hear very few modern inspirations on Prince's recent music, other than D'angelo on TRC's 'Muse to the Pharoah'.
But he has gained a few more 'older' inspirations. His lead guitar playing now has bits of John McLaughlin (of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, a jazz-rock group back in the seventies), while there are odd echoes of Frank Zappa's jazz-rock music on 'Xpectation'. Miles Davis (mainly the 1969-1975 version) is an important influence, as is '70s era Santana, and also general 1970s jazz-rock bands like Weather Report and Return to Forever. To me, Prince's 'new direction' is a kind of forward-looking-but-retro jazz-rock-funk, and musically speaking, I think Prince is making and playing the best music of his career right now (and that's saying something). If only more people would just get over his increased attention on the religious message in his lyrics. He's always 'preached' in his songs, and I think he's still quite a rude man underneath, he just hides it more than he used to ... But then he is 44 ... Dignity with age and all that. From what I've heard, I don't think there's anybody in the current generation of popular artists who can hold a candle to Prince in terms of sheer musical talent and inspiration (except for maybe D'angelo, if he keeps at it). In a way, I wish there were other, younger artists out there who could give Prince a real run for his money, but none of them seem to have his depth and range of musical knowledge, sheer talent and uniqueness. | |
