Obviously as an American, I do care that Prince pays his taxes - but having said that, I don't need to know whether he does or doesn't. It's not part of my "fandom" and it sure as hell shouldn't be public knowledge or news, but that's the world we live in. To me, that's tantamount to defamation of character and could be grounds for a libel lawsuit. I doubt that will happen in this case though since I'm sure he just wanted it over.
To reply to an earlier post about Prince vs. a normal person (as far as finances go): if a normal working person misses their tax payment, it's probably for the plain and simple fact that they don't have the money, period.
A few thousand dollars in the real world is the difference between paying the taxes or being able to pay the utilities and still have money to eat. The ratio of Prince's tax-to-income might hypothetically be the same as ours - on paper - but it's not the same in reality. Prince having numerous millions of dollars left over after paying taxes is not the same as us having hundreds.

I thought if the story was true, you could not sue someone over reporting the truth. Did Prince not pay his taxes when due? Was there a lawsuit filed? If this is true... I don't see how this is libelous.

Nope, this is an open society and it's public record by law.
Tax liens, divorces, foreclosures, applications for new corporations, probate notices, home sales, etc. are published weekly and even daily in every jurisdiction in this country. Buy a newspaper and look at the business or classified section under "legal notices".
Public records also include all legal proceedings such as civil lawsuits, criminal cases, marriage licenses, death certificates, etc. Some exceptions are adoption and juvenile records or cases that are sealed by court order.
There are no special exemptions for celebrities, Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. |

Prince has a bad rep as far as paying people and bill collectors but really, how many of us can say that we haven't had trouble or hassles when it comes to money? Most of the time money is a problem whether you are the ower or the owee. Prince not paying his bandmates may have some truth to it but what even has more truth to it is that Americans are greedy and always want more. I don't put prince on a pedestal, just pointing out that the issue of money is a constant in our society, one that makes enemies of friends, turns familys against each other, and is used to manipulate people's lives by this system. So I take it with a grain of salt when this kind of thing happens and just say "it's the american way". |

I understand that part and don't disagree, just point out that money is ALWAYS an issue one way or another unless you spend your entire life devoted to being on top of it. I'm a musician and recently I read an anectdote in Johnny Cash's bio where he says he'd walk out of meeting with lawyers saying "I just want to play my guitar". How many of you non-musicians can understand that? Money is a pain in the ass and my enemy when it comes to growth as a musician. |

Look, I ain't telling you what to feel, just saying how some of us feel. Don't really know what Prince's reason are, but i know that anyone like Prince who comes from lack has a hard time letting go of dollars often times. But as for me, money is nothing but a pain in my ass, having to earn it, having to give it to other people who want it more than i do etc.., Now, you feel and deal how you want, but that's how I and some of us feel like. |

And don't forget... Prince watches his money dliigently... when it comes to people potentially earning a nickle on his creations... (ie youtube etc). It's interesting how people have different attitudes towards money. As a general principal I think that people should honor their commitments if they have the means to do so. I think of it as putting myself in the other person's shoes. I know I'd be real upset if my employer paid me when they felt like it.
I also see it as a huge blessing to be able to pay my bills on time when so many people can't these days.
I don't know about the musician part because I don't believe in double standards. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. |

I am not excusing prince, I don't know him, from what I know, you are correct, he spends lots of energy on business and money, but he also does things that seem to show he has no regard for it. One thing I'm certain of, from everything I've read about Prince and what I know about people in our society, money and power are the prime movers, with power having an edge in the hierarchy. Prince is a control freak, I think he loves power more than money. but as far as the double standard thing, we are all born into a world with rules we have nothing to do with, they have a way of impeding on our spirits and souls. As for me, I do what I have to just to keep going but if I have let bills go because they are just not the oppurtunities out their, either in music or the work force for me, and I am faced with either being whored out for no money at all or not paying those bills, sorry, they will get fucked before I do. Of course we try to play by the rules, but you also have to realize, as for the common man the deck is often stacked. |

Even a common man with lots of debts, having trouble to pay his taxes, wouldn't be excused for this kind of behaviour. am i sucking dick now? And by saying that there are always squables over money, I'm saying it's hard to get a clear perspective on that when you are outside of the situation. I dont think its about sucking dick. Yes this was in the news but the rhetoric on these kinds of threads along with pictures of his properties and Google Earth pics boils down to fam porn. Nobody here knows the details of his finances to be making such blanket statements.

No you are not sucking dick, others are. Your point about some musicians caring less is not a valid one tho'. They are not above the law, nor does their profession excuse them for being lazy or uncaring. I have worked with quite a few musicians and I know the mentality of which you speak.
It's exactly the reason why so many musicans have been fucked by record comapnies and music publishers. All they have is eyes for is making their art and how much fast money it can bring them. When that means doing business, standing your ground, guarding your copyrights and not saying 'yes' to every shit contract that you are offered, they still sign. Two years later, hell even two months later, they are depressed, feel fucked over and come to seek your help again.
(The prospect of) Money and fame can do weird things to people. Prince is a fine example of that. |

And I suppose that a prime example of "fans who use their mind" is your last paragraph addressed to Mozfunky?
I don't see the fans who support Prince in this thread hating on the fans who don't. In fact it's in reverse. It's the fans who in "their minds/opinions" MUST be right who hate on the supporters.Do you see any "supporter of Prince" here calling names and insults to the "haters?" I don't. It's the other way around again.
What I find hilarious in this thread are the comments that Prince sits and eyes youtube to look after his money or that he looks after his finances. I mean Prince has what, high school maths and he sorts out his millions and his taxes?
People should be happy. MPLS municipality/state got richer through the fine. And yes Purplelove, you're right, it was paid BEFORE the tour, not after, like many of the "fans who use their minds" dispute.

No, I don't think so. He was fined as a normal tax payer would be fined, probably with a set time frame of when he had to pay by. His tax lawyer could have asked for an extension and failed to file it on time at the tax authorities. So he got the fine, like anyone would have and he had to pay like anybody would have to. Which he did. Tax authorities don't make concessions for anyone unless a tax attorney files for an extension to file. The Tax inspector has to approve this or he/she can also disapprove it. Companies and people do default on taxes so no he also did not do someting unique.
Hope that helps, but this is not my area of specialisation so don't take my answer as set in stone. "Free URself, B the best that U can B, 3rd Apartment from the Sun, nothing left to fear" Prince Rogers Nelson - Forever in my Life - |

No he didn't!! Every person on here running their mouth about how Prince "is horrible b/c he was late on his taxes" has been late on taxes too! Hell, who hasn't? Anybody that actually owes the government during tax time has been late! For those who have never actually owed the government wouldn't know what they are talking about! It SUCKS to have to pay taxes, I don't care who you are. I hate having to pay freaking taxes throughout the year, then get stuck with paying them again when I file. It's an atrocity, and I personally put them off for a year or 2 if I can! So Prince knows what it's like to grow up hard, so he wants to hold onto his money life everyone else does. Who the F*** cares? He is human, and he DID pay them, so kudos to him. He isn't a normal man in some regards, but in others he is a normal man with normal emotions and feeling. Damn, how hard is that to understand? Some people just love to hate on this man, then they wonder why his fans come to his defense to much. It's because it seems he can't even get a break or any love on his own fan site! Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol |
