Prince or the director obviously saw the Cars video by Gary Numan and thought it was the best effect since mu'fuckin' Star Wars. The thing is, Gary knew a little mirror went a long way. The When Doves Cry vid moves along just fine until half way through, when someone leaves "mirror effect" on autopilot.

at least the tv broadcast version didn't have it

and prince has had millions of worse ideas. like newpowersoul

nope. Prince's worst idea was making Lovesexy one track. Fans are still suffering because of that one.

Lol that annoyed me so much. I used a program to split the tracks up. Now I got no problems on my ipod.. haha

Nah, the US version is still one continuous sequence.

^But then again it doesn't have the mirror effect on it. Guess it's a draw.

Prince seems to have bad taste when it comes to the post production of his live videos...assuming he makes the final decisions which I'm sure he does. From the mirror effect on the Syracuse show, the dumb superimposed aerials from the Take Me With You video, and the choppy, fast paced shot changes in the Rave DVD, it's safe to assume Prince won't get a video editing job anytime soon. But as far as his worst idea ever? His worst idea would be to take the Parade, Sign O' the Times, and Diamonds and Pearls tours to Europe and not the U.S.....that was his biggest major fuck up.

I don’t think the mirror effect was bad. I think it’s kind of tight. It was cool to see the Atlanta show to see what it looks like without it. The mirror and When Doves Cry goes together.

I will agree with bigben07 that a huge mess up was not touring the US with Sign ‘o’ The Times and Diamonds and Pearls. Two of his biggest albums and he didn’t tour. To be honest Diamonds and Pearls was the only album I heard everyone bumpin’. I heard cats at the ball court, the mall, at the roller rink….everywhere.

The one track LoveSexy album wasn’t the best idea either.

I think the biggest disappointment was 1999 (the year). Everything was bad that year…a terrible low budget concert, too much make-up, and terrible album. Why didn’t he take advantage of the Mtv awards that year?

I agree with the OP...I want to see the PERFORMANCE, not effects. I have the same peeve with Bambi from Tokyo '90. Such a killer performance, but the visuals take me out of it.

I remember seeing that mirror thing probably on MTV, before I was a fan. Even though it got a little obnoxiously long, I dug it for the electro-psychedelic factor. Who else was going to do that but Prince?

And then came the ripping Purple Rain solos. And after all that I knew there was something really special about Prince.

I think the murky, low-rent production values on the entire Syracuse show's filming were the really bad idea. The mirror effect just adds another annoyance.
