ACACIA

1984 , such an interesting year, with the purple little brother as a world bonus !

But also the novel 1984 written in 1948.

And now we all have camera's starring in our face when we open the computer, big brother is undercover pappa-razi.

Its so early in the morning. I have'nt had my coffee yet. I think I'll leave this one to Ernest.

Peace.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Uh....from 1985-87, he acutually got better. Unless you think the below listed songs are worthy of asking "What Happened?" Sure many of the songs were demoed before 1985, but most of them were raw, and not the perfection that he turned them into.

Witness 4 The Prosecution

Can't Stop This Feeling I Got(Original)

We Can Funk(Original)

Joy In Repetition

SOTT

Play In The Sunshine

U Got The Look

If I Was Your Girlfriend

Data Bank

She's Always In My Hair

In A Large Room With No Light

Power Fantastic

Housequake

Forever In My Life

Kiss

Mountains

Sometimes It Snows In April

Rock Hard In A Funky Place

Anna Stesia

Lovesexy

When 2 R In Love

I Wish U Heaven

Train

Starfish & Coffee

Strange Relationship

I do think for the Most part NickBurt is right.

It's the Challenge of any big star to create music that is BOTH an artistic statement and appeals to the masses. This is what 1999, Purple Rain, and SOTT had. All three of these albums were obviously a piece of art, and yet also contained smash pop hits like Little Red Corvette, 1999, Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, U Got the Look, Housequake, etc.

I feel like almost any musician can make a purely artistic album. It's not THAT hard. Where the true skill lies is with creating an art album that has hit potential as well, and isn't just a self indulgent exercise.

The problem with Parade, ATWIAD, and Lovesexy is that while they are obviously artistic in nature, they don't have that certain something that also make them appeal to the masses. There are certainly some songs off of those albums that are radio ready (Kiss, Raspberry Beret, Alphabet St.) the albums as a whole don't necessarily beg to be listened to front to back like Dirty Mind or Purple Rain do. The problem is that for people who haven't drank Prince's KoolAid, these three albums will seem downright goofy.

Don't get me wrong, I love Around, Parade and Lovesexy, but these albums are downright weird. There are lots of WTF moments if you're not a hardcore Prince fanboy.

Prince always says that he could have "just made Purple Rain 2" instead of around the world in a day, and that's what he should have done

With the huge amount of fans and exposure he gained with "Purple Rain" both here in the States and overseas, he was able to become all artsy/fartsy. Even if droves previous fans left him, he still had a large fanbase, especially overseas where tastes are usually broader, who would tolerate the style change and some would even prefer it.

In a way, it was a smart move because if he had kept his signature Minneapolis Sound, he would have fizzled completely away beginning in the 1990s like the other groups of the late 1980s that were copying his sound. He could have remained a huge star in the late 1980s if he had not changed his style. Instead, in the late 1980s, he was still getting airplay on R&B stations but lots of folks considered him "back burner" or an artist that used to be great in the early 1980s before he got all damned artsy/fartsy. Actually, everyone I knew that didn't drop him in the late 1980s kept hanging on thinking he would snap out of it and become his old self on the next album. Then, the next album would come out and his head was still somewhere off in India, or Paris, France, or in the 1960s or early 1970s and everyone would swear they would not buy his next album but would still turn around and buy it when it came out. lol We kept thinking he would finally go broke making this "far out" type albums because Lord knows everybody was talking about him like a dog and laughing at all that artsy/fartsyness (DJs were having an absolute field day laughing at songs like "Do U Lie" and "Venus De Milo") so we figured if his ass got hungry enough he'd snap out of it and become his old self again. What we never dreamed at the time though is the Europeans were eating that shit up. That's why his ass was always touring over there back then instead of here at home.

Yes, the style change was a smart move. However, I think it still would have worked if he had done the same thing around five years later when the music scene as a whole was changing so a style change in 1990 would have been absolutely wonderful because those late 1980s albums (as much as I like to make fun of them) are some great albums. That way we would have gotten five years more of the badass, kickass, "Old Prince" in the 1980s before he changed. Would I risk whether Prince is still known or not today to have seen him done things differently back then and get more music from the "Old Prince"? Hell yeah, I would! People say, "Well, that's not what Prince wanted". Well, fuck Prince, I'm concerned with what Andy wants! evillol

Pfff lol C'mon, everybody knows that an american band/artist is not truly respectable until that band/artist achieves a huge following in Europe.

American bands/artists that only sell in the US are either bands/artists who keep repeating the same formula (and that's not cool in Europe), or just country artists lol

Parade was, sonically, the most interesting album of 1986, and it featured solid songwriting as well. I'm so glad that Prince left the MPLSound behind, he would have become a joke...even MJ evolved...

I couldn't care less if 80s DJ's laughed at Parade rolleyes lol
