The stories behind the songs... are they mostly true or speculation?

Sometimes I hear of what happened behind the scenes of a certain song and a few stories of what a song is about,

like When Doves Cry being about (correct me if I'm wrong) Susan (sorry I forgot the details).

Sometimes they are interesting, but I wonder if they are just speculation,

or maybe because of media, the story gets blown out of proportion.

There is another one that comes to mind but I wanted to know from the ones who know more and have been around a long time.

Are most of the stories true or speculation? And where do you get your info from? A bibliography, interview?

hmmm

.

I do not really like to know too much about what inspired certain songs, and the stories behind them, some are obvious, some not so, and that is the way i like it.

As for where we get our information? Well, i get mine from books, mags etc that i have collected over the years, i have been a fan since 1984-5. During a time period like that you collect a lot of stuff, hear a lot of things, learn. My interests are the music, then the man. Not who he is currently dating, what flavour of milkshake he likes blahblah. There is a place for that info, but it's not in my radar.

If you want to learn about Prince and his music, then keep reading, and listening......enjoy.

Hey, thanks for the replies, guess I should have worded it better...

...question answered, end.

lol

I'll change the wording.

There is a story I had in mind but I just didn't want to expand on it as an example because I didn't want someone to get all mad at me for bringing it up again...

but it was something that pplrain (an orger once said about a story, which I think may have been speculation, I can't be sure though).

It's a little strange to answer, cause the highly respected artist, to be honest, often sings about love in relation to some woman. He seems to include 1 world perspecctive (I will not say political, cause I know he is a JW) song on his album, like a tradition, everytime he releases...cinnamon girl, act of god, just to mention some recent ones, and like money don't matter tonight, these can turn on the tv or flip the newspaper open to know the actual story. When he sings love songs about someone, like what really puzzled me why in his first marriage he would release songs about other woman, like I used to have mad sex - me and this mulatto girl went down to dirty up another room. I thought he perhaps regarded his wife as mulatto, to excuse the embarresment I felt when he openly before the world admits to fornication. I don't know if it has changed with his JW style of life, that he actually sings about the woman that he is with/ married to / engaged to at the given time. So most of these stories about his songs about love to woman, you want name-dropping on this thread, or what LOL, like who inspired what....

Anyway Cherry Cherry, and Another Lonely Christmas puzzles me the most, if they were made up stories or real....did he have two girlfriends dying away from him like that for real, or was it imitation of someone else's story.

I guess at the end of the day, only the woman knows, only she knows Artist knows, only he knows.

These stories are related by band members, engineers, associates etc, of confirmed by more than one source, so they're as true as you're going to get - especially since Prince is a such an artsy-fartsy prat when it comes to interviews and such.

Is it because he evades answering the question?

i was wondering about that myself because i remember someone saying that BETTER WITH TIME was like a tribute or something like that to kristen thomas scott (the co star of UNDER THE CHERRY MOON) but Prince never did talk about that song so how did that person get that info if Prince (nobody really) said anything about that song...

Books like The Vault and DMSR will tell you what you want to know about certain songs, when they were created and who they were about. I haven't read The Vault but I have read DMSR and alot of the info in there was from interviews with people who were working with Prince at the time these songs were created.

Prince esta muerto...

My guess is that it's mostly speculation, either on our part or on the part of those who have written the books often referenced on these pages or on the part of the sources quoted in those books. Perhaps not even Prince knows. I think the "biographical" approach to his work, or any artists work for that matter, is sometimes less than fruitful.

The wooh is on the one!
