Katy Perry says Prince influenced "California Gurls"

During a Rolling Stone photo shoot in April 2010, Perry revealed details about a song on the album, called "California Gurls", allegedly a response to Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind", she stated: "It's so great that 'Empire State of Mind' is huge and that everyone has the New York song, but what the fuck? What about LA? What about California? It's been a minute since we had a California song and especially from a girl's perspective. We took the references of Prince, which is always a great reference, and some of the '90s, almost house music references".[13]

Cool. I dig the Katy Perry track.

It might be reaching a bit far, but the slap bass track (unusual for a song like this) along with the 80's sounding synths give a hint of that Prince sound.

Also the playfully sexual lyrics.

The most overt refrence thouggh would be not to Prince, but to Stevie Wonder.

In the closing few seconds before the end of the song, the vocal riff of "californiaaa....california girls", is done to the melody of "Isnt She Lovely".

I can hear the playful "I wanna Be Your Lover" influence in the track... Guitar on the the down beat... simple and fun!

I can hear 80's influence, but no Prince.. And maybe because of it's 80's sound I quite like this song.

Except they missed out the first note.

Very tenuous.

I always heard the Prince influence in that song, I bet people called her out for it too so she had to say something. It made me think of I Wanna Be Your Lover.

Yeah, right.

Too fucking bad he didn't see remotely the commercial success. Must be because he is black, though.

Kinda agreeing with kewlschool on the sound, though. I've heard soundbytes but not the entire song/video as a whole. All those doggone colors!! mad

Definitely the playfulness of Prince; reminds me of Raspberry Beret!
