Would young Prince see old Prince as an inspiration?
Would he draw anything from him like he did Sly, James or Jimi? Or would he think he's not really that inspirational?
Is there anything old Prince can do that his young self couldn't?
Questions. Questions.

I don't recall Prince seeing anyone over 30 as inspiration. Most of his influeneces were under 30 weren't they?

Old Prince is a superior musician, Young Prince was a sponge and a rip off artist so hell yeah. I can see old prince taking issue with young prince stealing licks from jam sessions and building nasty songs around them. Old Prince would bitch to Tavis Smiley about the kid not using his talent for God.

He wasn't inspired by James Brown? Really? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

And obviously Joni Mitchell.

Jimi Hendrix would have been 30 when Prince was 14... We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Joni Mitchell Sam Cooke George Clinton Sly Stone James Brown
Those being his biggest influences... Yeah, they were all 30 well before he began writing his first album, lol.

Yeah, I don't think Prince had a Logan's Run policy on his influences.

And he wouldn't have eaten Soylent Green, either. You know...being a vegetarian and all. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

James brown was under 30 when he inspired Prince as was all of the people mentioned here.

I figured that's what you meant, but just for example, Joni was born in '43. And Prince has mentioned albums of hers that came after 1973, so I don't think there's some magic 30-year-old cutoff. I think the works of James Brown and George Clinton continued to inspire him too even after they hit 30.

Possibly, but only if Prince was ONLY inspired by the stuff he did in 1963 & before, and I doubt that's true My Legacy

I'm thinking Miles Davis was over 30 as well when he did the stuff that Prince liked best. My Legacy

To answer the question, I think you can look at how Prince sees his idols. He has commented about not loving Stevie Wonder's newer material (specifically Ebony & Ivory) but realizing he was the same man who did all the songs Prince loved, so he still has great respect for him.
Particularly as a performer, young Prince realized that old Stevie could still come out and blow an audience away with dozens of classic songs.
So I think he would respect old Prince for what he had under his belt, but he would be inspired by young Prince. My Legacy

did he say why he didnt like ebony and ivory? this too shall pass

I don't think so, and this was part of a cryptic message on one of his old web sites. It related to D'Angelo & Beck criticizing his new music and his offer to open for either of them in concert to show them how much he'd "lost it" My Legacy

ok, thanks for filling me in.
he doesnt like it much when people criticise him does he lol
i find it interesting that he'd weave in a message about ebony and ivory. this too shall pass

The young Prince would look at the old Prince and would think: "Daily Mirror??? Really??? My future IS bleak..."

If I remember right he said something about how a young Prince (!) did not like Ebony & Ivory, and criticized Stevie in his mind but that he'd "forgotten the days," and that Stevie could have mopped the floor with young Prince in 1980 had they shared a stage. My Legacy

but thanks for explaining it further for me
i really like the song ebony and ivory, maybe he changed his mind about it when he grew up? this too shall pass

I think young Prince would pay good attention to older Prince, because of well...obvious style interest.
