Cosmic Day: Is the circulating version fake? According to our sources, Cosmic Day was recorded in mid-November 86, when Prince was in the middle of recording Madhouse 16, Camille, and Crystal Ball material.
I think we can all agree that Madhouse 16, Camille, and the Crystal Ball material all have that "Prince 86-87" vibe to them - Horns, drum machine, you know the feel.
Some songs from late October: "Housequake", "Feel U Up", "If I Was Your Girlfriend", "Rebirth of the Flesh"
Yet somehow, out of the blue, in the midst of all this, he decides to record a song using a drum beat hereto un-heard of in Prince land (ping-pong effect, then heavy live drumming), sing in a style he's never used before or since (both in pitch and delivery), steal a guitar riff from George Harrison, and even harmonize his guitar on the main riff (which he's also never done before or since, oddly). Add to that lyrics that don't match anything he was writing about at that time...
He then comes back in week and records songs that match his previous output from the month, but nothing like Cosmic Day.
Songs from after November 15, 1986: "Adore", "Play in the Sunshine", "Bob George"
It just seems fishy (mermaid-y?). I'm not saying the song doesn't exist. I just think what we have heard isn't the real deal. It's too out of place and doesn't even sound like a Prince song.
When it surfaced, it was said to be part of a tape that had demos of songs for other artists. The other leaked songs from that time (Big House, Traffic Jam), all have that "Yep, we're bootlegs from a tape" quality... yet "Cosmic Day" is in perfect pristine mastered-on-my-mac quality.
Any thoughts?
Please don't turn this thread into a "leak the whole thing!!!!"-fest. I'm just wondering if anyone else thinks we have another "If I Had a Harem" on our hands.

Don't know if it's fake or real, but, I do know I don't like it...
I'd read for years about how great a song it was, a masterpiece, among his greatest... when I finally heard the clip I was shocked at how bad it was.
For that matter, none of the song clips that circulated in that set do anything for me. Maybe I just need to hear the whole songs. Not to turn this into a "leak the whole thing fest", because what I have heard I don't like... Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

2 things.
he was recording a LOT of material, for a LOT of different projects around this time, several of which had very different sounds and vibes from each other, including jazzy stuff, r&b, film soundtracks, browadway musicals, etc., some of which saw the light of day, mish-mashed together, and some of it did not.
and he also used to do a lot of experiemtnation in those days. with the streak he was on in 1985 & 1986 culminating in the DF/Camille/CB/SOTT stuff, i find it very easy to believe he'd take elements he was using in other types of songs, throw them in a blender, and see if it worked.

It's real.
I personally took the clip and slowed it down. It's definitely, 100% Prince.Without any shadow of a doubt.
Basically, as you said the clip comes from a tape of Prince songs, all unreleased, that were sent round to other artists to see if those artists would want to record any of those songs. It's been suggested because of this, that 'Cosmic Day' may have specifically been written with a particular artist in mind, hence why a different style to his own material that he was recording in the same time frame. It's been speculated before that it may even have been written for Madonna.

Well, that short clip of "Traffic Jam" is in pure, clear release quality.
When I first heard that track called "Cosmic Day", I really couldn't believe this was the song they hyped so hardcore on the AMP boards. There were huge flame wars whereupon "Cosmic Day" was the foundation. And this is purportedly the song? Didn't seem right to me. I'm not sure if this song is or isn't the real one, but it seems really bizarre.

I was definitely underwhelmed by it after all the years of hype

Right? Literally, there's a shortlist of songs I listen to by Prince that just make me want to turn off the player and "Cosmic Day" is one of them.
Incidentally, I think "Fuchsia Light" and "Everybody Wants What They Don't Got" are great, though, and they were hyped up a lot. (I don't know if anyone else here remembers the HUGE DRAMA about "Fuchsia Light" back in the day between T and Richard Dower.)

for what it's worth, I was mildly underwhelmed by Fuchsia Light as well
such a cool name, too. | |

Haven't heard the full version, but unless there is something WAY different than the clip I don't think I'll bother hunting this one down...sounds awful "Prince doesn't have verbal diarrhea, he has studio diarrhea...." Allen Leeds

I was underwhelmed by it too at first. I gave it some time though and it sunk in. Still no "Go" though. That one could be one of my all-time favorite P songs.

It's definitely 100% genuine, no question about it. You only have to slow the track down (like any other Camille song) and it's quite clear that it's definitely Prince singing.

Above you mentioned "play in the sunshine, bob George, adore" all of which are completely different in vocal style and music style. I think you are just too familiar with those to see the variety. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

i always took it as he recorded it for the bangles in mind or somethin'
sounds very "white girly"
dont think he would intend that song for himself.
he sang it ina high pitch and then pitched it up. but you can still hear his voice. when he says "green /cream" i dont know which, but you can hear that rasp in his voice

You and me both...i never thought I'd say this about a Prince outtake, "some songs just weren't meant to be released" Its tough because i love about 95% of all outtakes that are circulating....whats the count btw?? 500 songs?? Around that. I seem to remember Turn It Up (the first edition, which is the only one I bought) listing around 600+.

It'll be on the extended US edition of 20TEN. Ask your homeboy who worked on the album.

There's no need to be a cock.
Or is it that you're just insecure about being wrong before?

I'm just ribbing you.
But I'm not wrong... yet. Still no news.

.... and like I said before, that's no reason to be worried. 6 months between US and EU "Lotusflow3r" releases.

Not gonna lie, even though I don't like "Cosmic Day", the motherfucker better toss it on the disc to make up for the wait. Especially when the wait is for something as paltry as 20TEN.

I can verify that it is real.
I like the track... for what it is. Churning guitar, psychedelic lyrics and very playful. It isn't deep, it isn't moody but it is a lot of fun.
It reminds me of Good Love.
The track is very Camille-like and fit that vibe. Personally, I wish he would have released the Camille album, and COSMIC DAY would have been a good B-side. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. I don't get why people may think this is fake, perhaps they need to listen harder. He uses exactly the same voice pitch in parts of IIWYGF. The only thing this brings in to dispute is that female engineers claim is that the vocals on IIWYGF was an 'accident'.

To each their own.
I get made fun of for liking "Props n Pounds" so...

I like this sample, the first time I heard it I thought it was a fake because I was expecting a Camille like voice. So Cosmic Day is suppose to be on the US release of 20ten now? i doubt it will be this version,he will probably re-record it like he did with "In a large room with no light"
