A 6? I can fit a man's size 6 shoe!
Yo, Prince...send me a fly pair of those gorgeous heeled boots, that are somewhere collecting dust in one of your many closets and I'll rave over your next music release, like I used to back in the old days!
You aint right. |

We make many different shoes but those particular designs are unique to Prince and we are not allowed to make replicas for anyone else. That point was made explicitly and unambiguously clear to us. |

This very morning we just found the original wooden lasts we made to those measurements. I'm holding them in my hands as I type this.
I'd like to see a picture of you doing that. |

Thank you for sharing! Great thread, I'm a size 6 also, yet I felt so huge standing close to him at an afterparty so many years ago...
Was there a favorite pair you liked after your dad completed them? Did any specific fabric jump out at you?
And I always wondered... what came first?... the shoe or the outfit? Did a designer make an outfit from an interesting fabric your dad presented to Prince to match a shoe?, or was it more like -his designer would dream up an outfit and your dad made the shoes to order? or both?

I was very young when he was doing this, so my own memories are not as vivid as my dad's. It was nearly always that the designer would the designer would dream up the outfit and present it's designs and fabric to my dad who would have to make it to match. I distinctly remember the details and designs would be very exact, endless pages of details and diagrams and numbers. Prince always wanted his boots made to the exact same basic design. The only aspect that would change would be materials, colours and fabrics. We did vary it on a couple of occasions but he wasn't keen on them and went back to the original. He must have needed a design that looked good but would also be comfortable and allow him to be move easily on stage.
The work he is most proud of is his collaboration with Gianni Versace, when he was designing Prince's stage outfits. For any outfit the shoes are an absolutely vital aspect and need to be got right. There was a lot of detail and discussion with Gianni but none of it was direct. It always happened through Donatella. I don't have any of those pictures to hand sadly, but I know they are out there somewhere on google. I'll find them them though.

I remember the out fits... one red, with a red shoe... a gold glitter (silk organza I think ) top and leather jacket paired with black trousers and black booties.... I remember the gold symbol zipper pulls on the shoes.....
That magazine spread was fabulous! I even loved Prince's glittered pixy hair cut.
Thank you for this! |

Ah, but for your talented father... the memory is a lasting one to have worked together with the Versace team to create a perfect look.
IMHO... I think your dad was trusted more than any designer Prince ever had... because we all know that its always about the shoes!
I wish I could shake Sir Kyriacou's hand right now. |

Your words are very touching. As they worked together for nine years Prince may have had some appreciation of my dad's work. If you are ever in London you are more than welcome to pop in and see him. |

Fab story...thanks!
Thanks for that man, it is one I love telling. I'm sorry but I couldn't find any pictures of the Gianni Versace collaboration in our stuff and googling it defeated me. Though it was fun sorting through the stuff and all the correspondence we had with Paisley Park and Bonnie the wardrobe lady. We found details of footwear we made for Mayte including her measurements and a tracing round her feet. In case you were wondering, she has smaller feet than "The Artist" (that is how he was always referred to). My old man was discussing whether to start selling off some of it, got sentimental value but now he is back in business on his own he wants to cut ties with the past and move on. Things like the last for instance can't even be used because it was made to his exact measurements and exclusive to him. His people were very clear with us about that.
