I wish we had Fan dates

Couldn't think fo a better name for it, but I wish we had tags on this site so you knew exactly where everyone was coming from. For example, I have been a P fan since 1980 and I love 20Ten. To get more specific, Beginning Endlessly. I hear a lot of people hating on the album and/0r also loving songs like laydown (which if I had to choose my least fav on the album it would be that track. and I love hip hop so its not that) and I always wonder are these post 1990 fans or is it just across the board.

Example:

Kaine

(emoticon)

(P fan date) 1980-present

Maybe its just me, but I think it would be cool and would put certain views in perspective.

some1 can easily say they've been a fan since '77 but was born in '86

They could but hopefully they wouldn't. I don't even know why someone would want to lie about how long they've been a fan. You gets no GP on here for that.

First: Doesn't really matter. Fans are fans for the most part. I think it would enable folks to judge, unfairly most times, where "certain views" are coming from. "Perspective" is a fancy word for judgmental sometimes.

Also, check a person's profile. If you need that sort of information, and if the Orger has filled it out completely, it's there.

I guess partly just wondering how many old school fans are still around and how many of them populate the current hater culture of fandom we currently have roaming on the site. Not judging, but just want to see where these cats are coming from. Say if you became a fan in 95, you are not going to have the same perspective as an 82 fan.

well i like pretty much most of prince's music spanning from 77 -2010 and im not an old head

but i understand where your coming from with the different perspectives but that is what makes it so much sweeter

i agree with ernest plus some orgers will become bias against older or newer fans

Maybe the answer is simply the obvious. The "hate" is simply a reflection of the weaker output by the artist.

Should this thread not be in prince.org site discussion?

Actually, do a search on "how long have you been a fan" or something similar. There are always those types of threads that crop up (like yours) every few months. You're surely to find one. I remember one about a month ago (July or August-ish), asking the exact same thing of "how long". That'd a good jumping point.

For me, I first heard of Prince on a K-Tel album called Soundwaves. I have two copies on vinyl today (not my original unfortunately). On side one, it had "I Wanna Be Your Lover", and even had a picture of the Prince album cover on the back (along with 3 other random ones). I couldn't figure out what it was - was it a girl? It looked like a guy, but the falsetto threw my little 11 year old mind off a bit. Needless to say, I was a fan from there on out. The hard core status started even more in 1982 or so with 1999. Blew my mind. But I certainly kept up with him to that point in 1982.

Side note: I kind of wonder if K-Tel, a Minneapolis based company, purposely put Prince's picture on the back since he was a very new up-n-comer from the local area, just a nod of support for a new artist. One might never know.

Side One:

Side One:
Upside Down - Diana Ross
Funkytown - Lipps Inc.
Cupid/I've Loved You For A Long Time - Spinners
Let's Get Serious - Jermaine Jackson
I Wanna Be Your Lover - Prince
The Empire Strikes Back (Melody) - Meco
I Was Made For Lovin' You - Kiss
You Better Run - Pat Benatar

Side Two:
Steal Away - Robbie Dupree
Tired of Toein' the Line - Rocky Burnette
Let Me Love You Tonight - Pure Prairie League
Do That To Me One More Time - Captain & Tenille
Lost in Love - Air Supply
Take A Little Rhythm - Ali Thomson
Into the Night - Benny Mardones

Here's the album cover:

But that's the thing, if I hated P's music, then why in the hell would I waste my time on a fansite? I'm just trying to see if there would be a way of seeing who exacty feels what way. Who loves everytime P does hip hop? Who hates it? And does it have to require someone doing a search and background check everytime someone speaks up. You take a glance, oh this person has been a fan since 78 and loves when P does hip hop? Wouldn't have thought that. It's just an idea I had.

I don't think there is anyone on this site that hates Prince's music.

Although I like the new output, I don't have a problem with someone saying that everything in the 80s was great and everything now is shit. You don't have to be a fan of the here and now to be a fan. Thats the point I don't think a lot of fams or newbies can grasp.

If you loved the firsts et of star wars films, and hated the second, it doesn't mean you can't be a fan of Star Wars. Equally, if you like all the films, it doesn't make you a "true fan".

If you read a tag that told you that fan X has been on board since 84, then read a comment that they hated 20ten, there is a good chance that some would assume they are simply "hating" on the new stuff.

There is another side of the argument that says they know princes output in more detail and are a better judge of its quality as they have experienced more of his whole body of work.

I thikn you idea of dates is an interesting one, but inevitably, will lead to stereotyping.

biggrin
