Does Prince get enough airplay? Hi Folks,
Was just wondering: here in Holland (according to himslef No. 1 fans!!) you hardly hear Prince on the radio. Of course none of the recent tracks are played, but also none of the "old" hits. Even hits like Purple Rain or Kiss are hardly ever heard. I work for the local radio station, so whenever I get the change I let them play Prince. How are things in America? Do you often hear Prince on your radio's? And if so, with which songs? Just wondering! Spanjeganger

There's a station in the Bay Area that plays a variety of new & old music - they play Kiss, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Soft & Wet, stuff like that...
An Urban Contemporary station played She Loves Me 4 Me when it came out... The more popular stations will ONLY play him when he's in town doing a show, and it's usually the same dreadful Prince mix they've been spinning for years. That's about it...

Funny that you mention this. I do not know what station you are listening to here in Holland, but I noticed for instance that over the last week they have been playing a lot (relatively)of Prince's music on 3FM national radio. I don't know for what reason they did this, these are the songs that I heard: Cream Get Off When Doves Cry Pink Cashmere Let's Go Crazy (last night) I Would Die 4 U (this very morning) Girls & Boys Indeed, no new material whatsoever...

Also when the ONA-tour came to Holland last year, there wasn't any media attention before the shows at all. Not even a mention that the tickets were sold out within 20 minutes.
I remember in 87/88 when Prince came to tour, they used to have a Prince-day on the radio prior to the concerts. Times have changed I guess, the 'product' has changed...

here in belguim on the comercial radio "donna" they play prince songs very much .he was also like about 20 times in the 2002 alltime list.
most songs u here from him are kiss-purple rain -sign o times -when doves cry-diamonds and pearls-most beautifull girl -when doves cry and i would die 4 u. u know there is a program on the is radio were people give there favorite songs from there work .and prince is always on the list.always the same songs yes .but the fact is he's always on some list.and thats good . also on the other stations there is always some prince songs on the radio.its just sad that there is never a song on it from the last years .i think the most beautifull girl is the last song they know from him. woekie woekie!!!

I was in California Pizza Kitchen the other day & they played I Would Die 4 U, does that count??
But then they played Don't Rush Me by Taylor Dayne A sick & solid reminder that to the masses, Prince will forever be associated w/ & relegated to the 80's...

I live in Ohio (USA) and I do have to admit that they hardly ever play any of Prince's hits. Except: "Little Red Corvet", and "Kiss" I wish they would consider playing a few of his other hits as well. Dreaming permits each and every one of us to be quietly and safely insane every night of our lives.

I live in Toronto and I only ever hear purple rain, little red corvette, kiss and once in a while they throw in lets go crazy. Other than that, I never hear his music which is ok with me because I have given up on radio. Like the above said "radio blows", so I don't waste my time on it much anymore.

Spanjeganger In the US most of Prince's 80s work gets airplay on "old school" stations, or 80s formatted stations. It's very rare to hear anything new by Prince on mainstream radio, especially with any consistency. You'll hear some 90s songs on there, like "Cream" and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", etc.... His age plays just one factor; you could probably count on one hand the number of recording artists his age getting airplay with new material. He's outside the demographic. Then there is the legal payola factor; major labels shell out tons of money for their artists to get airplay. Indie artists need not apply. US Radio will never be the same...unless there is a major revamping of the system. [This message was edited Tue Jan 28 17:51:58 PST 2003 by Supernova] This post not for the wimp contingent. Joe Kelley spins a good deal of Prince on his show "The Upper Room," so we get to hear some interesting sounds in Connecticut when Joe goes on the air. I always spin at least 4 or 5 Prince tracks on my own show, which is also broadcast in Connecticut, and neither he nor I (though I'm certainly not in the league that Joe is) spin just the hits. Heres a sample of a first hour playlist from my radio show, "The Mothership Connection." (I say first hour since it's a 2 hour show).
Parliament - P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up) Earth, Wind & Fire - Africano/Power Prince - Strange Relationship (Live) Prince - When U Were Mine (Live) Eddie Hazel - Juicy Fingers The Time - 777-9311 The JB's - I'm Payin' Taxes, But What Am I Buyin'? Maceo Parker - Rabbits In The Pea Patch Stevie Wonder - Higher Ground The Bar-Kays - Gotta Groove [This message was edited Tue Jan 28 12:01:59 PST 2003 by getwild007] The Mothership Connection... I don't know for what reason they did this, these are the songs that I heard:
Cream Get Off When Doves Cry Pink Cashmere Let's Go Crazy (last night) I Would Die 4 U (this very morning) Girls & Boys Well, I am forced to listen to the No.1 teenage station called Radio538. I hate that station. Their slogan: 100% Hits...there is nothing more boring then to listen 9 hours a day to 100% hits. They say they play hits from the 80's/90's and hits from today. Well then ... why don't they play Prince's hits from the 80's, damn even in the 90's he had some hits! (Dinner With Delores, Betcha by Golly Wow, Most Beautiful ... ) More and more I hold on to the line taken from "A Jukebox With A Heartbeat": "Do the people even know what they want, if they never hear what they need" and that is so true. If radio-stations only play what recordcompanies tell them to play, then those big chiefs keep controling what is a hit and what isn't and not what the public thinks is a hit! I get sick to my stomach everytime I hear Lasgo - Something, Pink - Like A Pill, REM - Losing My Religion played over and over again. Pink I hear at least 3/4 times a day. Every DJ on 538, plays what the computer tells him to play. Fortunenately there is one DJ who is the exception on this. Edwin Evers plays more and more songs from his on choice. A few days ago he played I Would Die 4 U, but he also played Lonesome Day by Bruce Springsteen (also an artist I never hear except that dreadfull Born In The U.S.A. or even worse Dancing In The Dark!). So there is hope, but the general public stopped to think and what is even worse stopped to care. Every new single by J.Lo, Destiny's Child, Nelly etc etc gets played untill all the life is sucked out of it, wether it is a good song or not! As you may notice this a subject which I take seriously. Thank you for your points of view...please keep them coming, I need to know I am not alone in this!

he gets enuff airplay...
...of the same crap! "lrc", "wdc", the usual. my biggest wish is 2 tune into the radio at random and hear "my love is forever" or some other song unknown 2 the average joe/jane bein played... ...but it won't happen. damn, i should become a dj... edit in the hat. just the older stuff Mainly&that comes with His Peak on Commerical Radio.evey once in a while you'll hear a 90's song on there. He still gets alot of Play on "quiet Storm" Radio for His Slow Jams.truth is Pop Radio wore out His Big Cross-over Songs.but Black Radio played all the jams,B-Sides,etc.. now on College Radio especially Black Schools He got much Play.the Bottom line is if He comes out with a tight Jam the Cat will be Heard&Prince ain't dropped that kind of Jam for me in years.alot of mellow Jams but not that Funk. mistermaxxx

I'm from Holland as well. The radio stations we play at work (Yorin FM and a local The Hague station) play a lot of Prince, but only oldies:
1999 When Doves Cry Kiss The Most Beautiful Girl In The World Purple Rain OK, they are all oldies, but I hear some Prince at least two, three times a day... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...
