What was with the fanbase attack? When Prince went on a rampage and made youtube start taking down his video and made sites close or take down their galleries, I thought the man had lost his mind, but I never found out the reasoning behind it all. And is he still doing all of it???

Go to youtube and look for yourself. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

You have to be willing to do the work.
Hmmm, wonder what that could be? Perhaps GOING TO YOUTUBE and SEARCHING FOR PRINCE VIDEOS?
Oh, and then there's this:

Don't mean to be rude and all but where you've been since 2007?

i thought prince had become a douche for doing all that and left the fam til a few months ago. i kept up on the music, but that was it. i got an answer about youtube...and have seen the crap about that...but what about the closing of fan sites and fan galleries??? what was the reason behind that one.

it started in 1997 when he wanted one collective website under his control. he "invited" fansites to join, and the ones that did not were sent cease & desist letters with regard to using his name or his image. then he sued Uptown.
with the youtube thing in 2007, you can kinda-sorta see what the point might have been. yeah, he was still a douche, but not as big a douche as he was 10 years earlier.

oh yes, just as the net was becoming the main thing for everyone to be on! forgot about the collective site crap.
but why did he do it again? didn't he see how many people he pissed off then, when the net was still young...doing it now was even worse!
no one is saying though what the WHY was then or now on that collective site or closing sites now.

it's hilarious that you keep posting this considering that this site doesn't have that function any more and the search function that we do have is a mess.
also, consider that the OP wanted to start a discussion on the topic. finding a thread from 2007 isn't going to accomplish that, since threads here expire after 3 months.
this is a discussion forum. the OP wanted a discussion.

Actually it does, Naysayer. If you learned how to use it, you might enjoy the true irony of it. You think people posting all those links to previous threads are pulling them out of their proverbial butts? When you use the Google Search Box (not the search box in each forum that is for that forum's search), it works, and it works quite well. Give it a go, eh?
You aren't adding to the discussion, but rather hijacking in the name of being the hall monitor you accuse me of being. Tsk tsk.

and what did you add to the discussion?

...O_O soooo yeah, i found the WHAT happened...does no one know WHY?!

It's odd, and terribly telling on you, how you attack me, yet Genesia said basically the same thing, sans the gif, and you've not even said boo to her. Your narrow-minded hypocrisy is blinding.
You're being THAT GUY again.

Prince is weird and very obsessed with those artist's rights - I guess that's why. Prince 4Ever.

I guess Databank had pretty obvious reasons though... You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

odd and terribly telling? I like Genesia and I dislike you. That's not hypocrisy and it was no secret.
and the fact is, YOU were being "that guy" again, running around playing deputy moderator. I noticed it responded in kind.

It was funny the first time...not so much now.

ernest needs to get laid is all
on the topic: the most recent cease and desists that prince sent were because he didnt like his fans reaction to the planet earth album.
he considers himself a musical authority and doesnt appreciate it when his fans speak about him in such animalistic derogatory tones. this too shall pass

meaning I am funny all the time?

First off: I'm f*cking a (barely) 21 year old frat boy, so I'm super good in that department, but thanks for your jock-ular concern. brown-chicken-brown-cow
I do agree about the Prince thing to some extent. I've said this before, but I'll restate it here. Prince bought into his own celebrity at some point. Sure he deserves much, if not all, the accolades he has received over the years, and perhaps there's a few he's undeservedly missed. However, his humility left him. When he started saying "I am music," or "If I want new music, I'll just make it", I knew he was going too far, for my tastes. Prince is his own authority on music, but every professional musician is to some extent. They do what they do, and they do it well (for the real musicians of course, not wannabes). They are the authority on their stuff. But in general, it's still all one big lesson. I mean, I would hope Prince is still learning things about music he didn't know before, or writing, or production. It's when he becomes complacent and too content in his knowledge of music that things began to get boring. For me, that was 2000 onward. Just a terribly boring time overall. The bright spots in the past 10 years are far and few between.
I think he got a bit too used to having his fans praise his every blink of an eye, and building statues to every wad of toilet paper he used. He used to say that he loved the interaction w/ the fans on the internet, and that's why he dove into it so early on (opposed to most other musicians). But when that interaction bit back, and he realized his fans weren't robots, that's when it began to go sour. It was a very gradual process, and he tried a few different times to make things better, newer, different, interesting - but everyone has their opinion on how that went over.
As far as the Planet Earth theory you stated: Totally false. An artist isn't going to sue people because they don't like their album. If he was that pissy, he would have not done 21 nights in London. He wouldn't have done anything. The cease and desist orders were happening way before that. I got a warning from his people ages ago, which I relished actually because it was so retarded of a situation in the first place for them to get on my jock. That was 2001/2002, so well before Planet Earth. Prince and his website people started to approach these other sites and try to coax them into becoming part of the collective that was NPGMC. They agreed to take down their sites, and have their URL's and pages point to Prince's site. It was really a slick way of getting the dumber people to bend to his demands, instead of telling him to go fuck himself (in so many words) like prince.org, or Housequake, or whatever other site.

for his sake, i hope he charges by the word. [Edited 8/26/10 19:59pm]

thats not what i said.
i said he issued the cease and desists because of the manner in which his fans expressed their displeasure.
i'm not saying he should've made those threats, far as i'm concerned he need to get over himself and practice what he preaches
but at the same time i dont agree that the right and privelege of freedom of speech should be abused to the point where an artist feels the need to lash out like he did
my honest opinion is that prince gets the fanbase he deserves.
p.s. if he's only 21 he's probably not doing it right. this too shall pass

He's doing me, and that's all kinds of right. He's relatively inexperienced, so I'm already a rock star in there. LOL

show him how to love you tender so that when you come here all you'll wanna do is make sweet cyber-love to all whom you encounter this too shall pass

Ernest, you should really consider just making this your sig...
Seriously though, I get it, but wouldn't it just be easier to ignore posts where the OP hasn't done their research? Oh well, I guess somebody has to be the search police, so more power to ya!! Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

i'm starting to realize prince has a thing for doing things without logical reason...guess attacking his fans was just one of them...and what were they doing with Planet Earth that he didn't like soo much????
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The initial cease and desist orders came before Planet Earth was even remotely conceived.

I'm so tired of your posts pointing out that people have already talked about certain subjects. You're not a moderator. And besides, if no threads were allowed that had been previously talked about, this whole forum would be empty.
