"Minnesota Good Afternoon" - My Prince Holy Grail

"Minnesota Good Afternoon" - My Prince Holy Grail

OK, so I grew up in Minnesota, but not Minneapolis. During the Christmas 1984 5 night stand that Prince and the Revolution played at the St. Paul Civic center I was 12 years old living in Duluth. I didn't even realize that it was going on . Later, when I moved to Minneapolis @ 15 my first boyfriend, Rich, told me he went to one of those shows, and that Prince played a 45 minutes of the set just on Piano. I have always wanted to hear this show.

Now, there are limited 'circulating' Prince shows and boots, but I have been certain for years that a lot more exists than has been commonly understood. The reason I think this is because when I was in high school, I had a friend who had an older boyfriend that worked at Rykodisc in Minneapolis. She had a giant list of cassette boots that could be orderd from said boyfiriend, and I swear to god every Prince show that ever was was on that list. Certainly all the Chistmas Purple Rain shows were. Back then, not knowing the date of the piano set show, I purchased my first boot of The Balck Album and Camille from her.

Before the Databank closed They had a bootleg listed as "Prince 28-12-1984 ´Minnesota Good Afternoon !!´ " In the review they described the long Piano section and that it was a matinee show. So, finally after all these years my show has surfaced. I have yet to actually find this boot, however. There doesn't seem to be any info about it at all since The Databank closed.

Has anyone heard this show? What's the setlist? What's the sound quality like? Do you have cover scans?

COMMENT

One of the few afternoon performances of the Purple Rain tour. Considering this is an audience recording from 1984, the sound is surprisingly decent. There is a fair bit of audience noise and talking - however it isn't so distracting as to ruin the recording. The main problem with this recording is the audible tape hiss - with headphones on, it gets quite annoying. The show itself is a beauty. The piano medley is VERY lengthy, and includes a cool version of 'Something In The Water', along with a piano led 'Take Me With U' - as opposed to the full band version usually played. The real highlight is 'Baby I'm A Star' which lasts an astonishing 28 minutes. Unfortunately Purple Rain is missing - no matter though, because this is a fabulous (even though incomplete) show.

The piano section effectively runs from tracks 6 - 16 on disc 1 - well over 30 minutes (but lots of that rambling commentary too).

A french guy was selling these cassettes as well back in the early 90's. U have 2 know that, considering the recording devices that people used 2 have at the time and the fact that they ended-up as being copies of copies of copies of copies, most of them had HORRIBLE sound quality (and i should know because i purchased quite a few of them back then). Basically, i think that the digital age has made this parallel market obsolete, and obviously all the good shows (either those with significant content or those with great sound quality) are easlily found 4 free online.

Well, I'm sure, but I've never seen it. I've never really had boot hook-ups. I mean, there's there's the internet, now. But I'm still not super good at finding everything I want.

I went to the December 23rd concert at the Civic Center. Those hometown shows were an event. Everyone I knew went to at least one of the shows. I'm sure I still have the ticket stub somewhere. I know I still have the tour book.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I'm sure they were. I'm sure if I had seen them at that age my head would have exploded.
