Well, I would say that the repetition on the instrumentals, in particular the "Ba pa pa pa" that comes up in it really gives me the whole vibe in. Also like you it has the whole party jam going for it. I think that the not so good Tony M vocals is what gives the song a bad rap (pardon the pun). I'm telling ya, if Prince did ALL the vocals it would be applauded like a Housequake, just my IMO of course

I loved the album. The only two duds for me were Strollin' and Walk Don't Walk. Add in Horny Pony, Violet the Organ Grinder, and Gangster Glam and it was a great year to me. All the videos were cool. The live show amazing (ofcourse take out the "outbursts" from Tony M). TRUE BLUE

In one of the previous conversations in this forum the conclusion came down to the phrase rhyming with "diamond and pearl" and/or hastily put-together song writing.

This is one of my favorites because it is when I started getting into Prince's music. I first loved Batdance. That song reminds me of my childhood because I loved Batman. I was the only ten year old I knew that dug the D&P cd. It was a time and place. Its a reminder to me of how long I have loved his work.

There was a long period in my life where I did not listen to music on the radio nor watch videos, there were small gaps where I would turn on a tv or radio and listen to music, but because I wasn't familiar with who was who in the music world or the names of songs, the impressions of the music didn't stick with me.
BUT... when I heard "Diamonds and Pearls" the song on one of those rare occasions, this is one song that immediately stuck with me. I don't know how I found out it was Prince, but I guess eventually I did find out who it was, never bought the tape or cd, but I guess it's a good thing because now I tend to play songs I like over and over and burn myself out on it.

I like the "Diamonds and Pearls" album; Rosie Gaines vocals are amazing, I but don't care for Tony M.'s rapping. His flow was seriously lacking.
Really dug the hologram album cover, though Hey...

Great ablum! It was one that got ALOT of play in my house when I was little. "Diamonds and Pearls" the song was 2nd only to "Purple Rain" in my household! I personally love "Diamonds and Pearls, Gett Off, Insatiable,Money Don't Matter Tonight, and Willing and Able." I sometimes look over it too, since there are others that I love more and I heard this one so much growing up, but I wouldn't want to not have this cd.Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Really dont like the song - completely and self conscious.
The album is pretty good to me. I dont really play some songs like Live 4 love, Push, Strolling and maybe Walk dont walk too much, although i generally like them, but i listen to Gett off, Thunder, Cream, Insatiable, Willing and able and Daddy pop often......so half is and the other half is to me.

D&P: takes me back. 2 concerts which were great by the way. And as some1 said before. Some of his last truly spectacular shows with lots of stage props and showmanship. Really loved the album when it came out. Thunder was such a mighty opener with it's multi layers of music and vocals. When I heard the long version I was even more thrilled! Daddy Pop a good follow up, fonky as hell. D & P excellent song with a supurb video. I didn't warm up to Cream immediately it took some getting used to but these days I love it. Willing & Able and Strollin' excellent songs that still hold up! Walk don't walk was a filler song to me, but nice nonetheless. Gett Off THE song!! wow still spin it at the club I DJ and the response is always overwelming. It never fails to fill the dance floor. Jughead, always hated the song! how could he ever release such a thing??? Money don't matter, great pop tune, a bit long but thanks to the single edit very good! Push a nice dance song. Insatiable, ha the album's make out song, still works as a make out song today Live 4 Love, always loved this song, the live versions were killer!
But as noted earlier the abum would've aged better without Tony M raps.... "Time is a train, makes the future the past"

I don't really like 90s music a lot, but D&P is like 1 of my fav albums of all time!

Very good album, and without Willing And Able, Walk Don't Walk and Jughead it would've been a very very good album.

I agree-ther was something absolutely devoid in the 90's and I can't pinppoint what it was. D&P's? I think what excited many a Prince fan was that it seemed P could pull it back in commercially whenever he wanted-even if we didn't like the music so much- we were a little smug. We never realised it was to be properly the last time.

Thunder is the same vein musically as When Doves Cry, like the same tone, with different production, lyrics, and a much more extended verbal chorus. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I go back to D&P every so often.
D&P, Live For Love, Insaitiable, Walk Don't Walk, Strollin', Gett Off (the extended version) are y favorites. I even like Jughead and Push.
My favorite from that period is Horny Pony.

I think one's opinion of the album depends on whether they like Prince as the "artist" or Prince as "pop superstar". There is nothing groundbreaking but, OMG, it was promoted well. Prince put his faith in the corporate machine and boy did it pay off. The videos were spectacular and looked like they cost over the couple of thousand dollars he usually spent on them. (Note: I still can't figure out what the hell the first five minutes of the long version of "Cream" meant but damn did it look good). You could not go two hours without hearing Cream or D and P on the radio. The typhoon, the twins, the 3D cover...nary a misstep in the whole freaking campaign. I mean think of how many Prince CDs suffered saleswise because of a bad single choice or confusing (to the masses at least) concept. Diamonds and Pearls, the product, was about a B but the promotion was an A+
That's why it is hard to look at the CD 20 years later...it exists as just the music out of the context of the marketing. I personally thought it was awesome to see Prince scaling he Billboard charts again after Graffiti Bridge crashed and burned. All good things they say never last...

I rarely feel the urge to spin it. For me, it was the first of Prince's releases that had no cohesive production or thematic mosaic - it was like here's the bombastic OTT I-met-with-God opener, here's the I'm-still-still-fonky jam for my urban audience, here's my mainstream radio ballad, here's my catchy pop nugget take on Marc Bolan, here's some jazzy falsetto, here's my 90's take on JB, here's some awful rap, here's the big seduction ballad, here's the bombastic, OTT, I-met-with-God closer. Covered all the bases? Notch up five million sold.Don't get me wrong. The majority of these songs contained top drawer material. There's just too much friction between the styles for me. Parade varies wildly but is lubed by the greater thematic whole which threads all these disparate sounds together in a seamless whole. D&P sounds like product, which is how it was intended. He did exactly what he set out to do and well done to him for it. It's just not my cup of tea. I'm still certain this second heady peak of global megastardom fucked deeply with his artistry, radar and muse for a while. The next few albums - Come aside - were just clones of that ragtag, throw-it-all-and-see-what-sticks formula - albeit with even stronger songs. Lightening very rarely strikes the same spot twice though. For me, he was getting further and further away from what made him so unique and worthy of the label genius in the first place. It took until TRC for the Prince I dig to get his groove back. Musically. Lyrically..another story for another day.

The album's title says it all. The songs are shiny gems that are pretty, but do not serve any real purpose other than to sparkle & generate money. And I have always thought the song itself was a metaphor for his career more than an actual love song. Perhaps it is a love song to his fans. In that sense, it's actually kind of deep, but on the surface it's a crappy sappy radio friendly ballad.
This album has fewer weak spots than many Prince albums, but it also has nothing that really inspires me, and I have always felt he was dumbing the music down for public consumption, and has continued to do so (with a few exceptions) to this day. My Legacy

The first album from Prince that trully regarded as disappointing. I didn't like the sound, didn't like many of the songs. It sounded mellow and overproduced. The rap in it was awfull.
I would see it as a task with little pleasures if I'd to listen through the entire album. "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." - Carl Sagan

True!! And like I've said be4; the whole D&P period was great 4 a Prince fan. The tour, the hits on the radio and in the clubs/bars, the MTV-specials/Prince-weekends..
I had no friends who where Prince-fans but they had Purple Rain AND D&P. I thought every Prince fan would have enjoyed it as much as I did but when I joined the org 6 years ago I really was surprised that it wasn't a fav !!
Gett Off is in my top5 and the other hits among my fav's. Also Money don't matter is such a beautiful song, he hasn't sound so mainstream be4 but it's great. It wasn't such a big hit but it's one of the few 3rd or 4th single of an album that still is played a lot on the radio!!
And if I can say something about the sound, this one sounds great and even his production on this album got great reviews.
Diamonds&Pearls is in my top 5-albums, the only competition 4 best album of the 90's : The Gold Experience!! Love4oneanother
