I saw Hour 2 of this show, and they interviewed Neil Diamond and they asked him who were his greatest artists of all time and he replied "Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra" and the reporter said "Why them?" My beef with this list is that it doesn't include jazz music or gospel music. Jazz is the only original American musical artform so it's only right to include artists whose music greatly contributed to the aural performing arts. Where's John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bird, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson? for example. That's why I got so much respect for Andy Stewart, Sting, Phil Collins, Bruce Springsten,Prince, Hall and Oates and musicians like that, who readily acknowledge music and performers who may not be contemporary but their contributions directly and indirectly shaped the musical landscape past, present and future.

[Edited 9/6/10 21:35pm]

We talk about MJ's largesse and cultural impact? Frank Sinatra set the template for the modern vocalist, was the first teen idol, and for his time was BIGGER than MJ could ever be. Prince made one of the great rock movies but Frank won an Oscar for his acting and routinely bullied studios to make a gang of movies he wanted made. Hist chart success is only bettered by a handful of artist and the rappers who claim to be "Dons" because they have reality shows and colognes?. Sinatra at once was the biggest movie star/ singer and hanging with crime bosses ( who ruled 95% of unions & casino's) and the fucking President. Jay Z wets his pants at a dinner invite from Obama, Frank routinely chased ass with the most powerful men in the world. Music didnt start with Elvis, theres a reason HE chose to intigrate himself back into show business by appearing with Sinatra.

Sinatra was NEVER bigger than MJ. Nobody in music history has ever been able to appeal to all races, ethnicities, cultures, ages (2 t0 92), sexes, all around the globe BUT MJ. Do NOT get it twisted. His music went in nooks and crannies on planet earth where no other artist of western culture ever could. Oh and he opened the doors for Prince Roger and every other black artist that came after Lil Mike of J5, and then again Thriller Mike. he should be numero uno.

eek Putting Michael Jackson in the same category as the Village People just lost you all credibility!! no no no! Michael Jackson's voice is superb and flawless!! He used his body as a tool and he embodied music and displayed it through dance. It wasn't just about marketing. Alot of people are marketed and still fail to make it big!! Also, considering the time when MJ came out as a solo act, people still weren't that open to an AA pop star!! He made it because he had "it." Michael Jackson does write music that lyrically could challege the most skilled songwriters, Prince included. His ear for good music was unmmatched. If one listens to MJ's cds, song for song, he keeps your attention and if listened to from an unbiased perspective, you can't deny the greatness of his songs!! His Bad, Dangerous, and Invincible were 3 of the best ablums to ever be made. You can go down that list and the songs are simply AMAZING!! I know his Thriller ablum is the biggest selling ablum of all time and will likely remain that way for years to come, but it's not his best work! Give me Purple Rain over Thriller anyday!! But Sign O The Times over Bad? Yeah, but just barely!! But I'm taking Dangerous and Invincible over Diamonds and Pearls and The Rainbow Children!! And that's saying something cause I'm all over Prince!!

Prince in a word association game/interview said "genuis" when MJ was mentioned, he didnt pause didnt hem n haw..

This fact alone makes me not only believe even more in MJ's genius, but love Prince even more for being honest and giving MJ his props!! I loved how the 2 of them recognized each other as geniuses!!

Quincy Jones, Sammy Davis jr. James Brown, Stevie all called him genuis. I dont think he's in the Prince catagory musically but his artistic instinct is waay up there with the best ever. I watch a lot of his dance stuff on youtube and honestly he was trying to push his body to the point of musical instrument.

I agree!! Those 4 people calling MJ a genius should be proof enough to any doubters. Watching him dance and perform gives me chills...he really was SO GOOD!! Not the same kind of good as Prince, but on another level of goodness. Just magical seeing him dance and sing!

I would have loved to see Prince and Mike just riffing, Prince on drums and MJ just dancing

OMG!!!!!!!!!!! That is orgasmic!!! I always thought, "if those 2 ever got together...the world could end after it and I wouldn't give a damn!!" I would have loved to see them dancing on the same stage too!! OMG, that would have been crazy amazing!! And then the 2 of them just singing a song together that they wrote, then Prince doing a guitar solo and MJ dancing. Ahhhhhhhhhh Only in my dreams!!! That would be nirvana, pure nirvana!!

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

eek eek eek Blaphemy!! Invincible is arguably MJ's best cd and is 1000x better than anything the VP could ever put out. I bet you even they would agree. Disco classics sure, moments to remember in music? NOT really!! Disco is just like alot of rap, most people would love for it to disappear from music history altogether!!

I can't believe people are actually taking this list seriously lol . Why are people continuously bitching about how MJ isn't 1#? Why does it matter? Do you see me bitching about how Prince isn't in the top 5? No. Why? Because, one, I don't care and two, no one should ever consider the thing VH1 says to be valid, ever. lol

The word "idol"teen idol as used in popular culture, Sinatra. Sinatra opened doors for black performers by himself, got on the phone and said if my friend dont play, i dont play. MJ had powerful record execs do his bidding MTV played Thriller because they wanted the next Phil Collins. Prince broke that ground before Mike with LRC. The very template that would allow for a singer of pop music to impact so many people as MJ did, was created by Sinatra. I have more connection to Prince and MJ but Sinatra's impact made their impact possible, his impact is unavoidable regardless of genre. Sorry. MJ changed the game and set the template for Justin and Usher, they cant avoid his influence, its called evolution.

You have to take into consideration the observations of genuis's and not us (aka fans) because we are often driven by emotion. When i make observations about a fighter i can only go on my eyes and what it was like when i was in there. But if one of boxings sage trainers who learned his craft from elders who got it passed on to them by guys who actually saw Sugar Ray Robinson i go with it. Prince has never been shy when it comes to calling it like he see's it musically and his talent wont be seen anytime soon. Quincy Jones goes back to Ray Charles, worked with Sinatra and Count Basie!. Had he thought Mike was some bubblegum media creation he would have passed on Off the Wall. Stevie? even Smokey said he was a stone killer at 8 yrs. old, and remember Motown didnt have room for "no talents". That label was filled with genuis, you had to be special just to get some run. MJ was touring while Prince was in his mama's bed and he sat at the knee of Jackie Wilson and JB. He is a genuis, yet his success culturally overshadowed this- He was that huge.

don't like the list... to me a band is not an artist..

and please.. michael jackson on 3... he's not an artist.. he's a singer/dancer

neutral And what do you think an artist does? Last time I checked Prince does both of those too.

I know this is Prince board, and generally, like Michael Jackson boards, people will lean twards the artist the board is about.

However, you gotta give credit where credit is due. Personally I'd put MJ at number 2 or 1. Prince I would put at 5.

Btw guys, Michael Jackson is NOT white, dont even know why someone would say that.

Peace and love people, dont attack me.

While MJ was a an icon, he should not be seen as the blue print for "every other black artist" that came after. Prince already was charting his own path and owes more to Sly, James Brown, Parliament and Hendrix than MJ.

MJ had his influences, whether they be Gene Kelly, Sammy Davis, or whomever. If anything, MJ influenced and opened the "commercial doors" for many black artists in the 1980s (due to Executives in the media world trying to recreate the formula of Thriller) and his artistic style can be seen in Usher, Timberlake and the like.

Both MJ and Prince owe the world to James Brown, Little Richard and others for creating the attitude and musician ship needed to thrive the way they did. They just elevated the game to another level and as contemporaries, they used each other to push their art.

Well put, and dead on... and yes, Frank insisted on equality... he was obsessed with equal rights, and used whatever power and influence he had 2 do something about it. Also, his outstanding vocal phrasing and rythym was also a huge influence on a wide range of vocalists in a wide range of genres.

He may have resented Rock and Roll but his lifestyle, the partying and debauchery was the template for the modern music star as well. The way he ran with mad crew influenced Sugar Ray Robinson who on a tour of europe had his crew called an "entourage". He brought it back to the US and it became a part of lexicon.

Well put. I think Sammy is very underated and may have touched them both in ways they dont even know. His ambition was legendary adn created resentment even among black artist who were dealing with the limitations of a racist industry. MJ's ambition was boundless like Sammy and he also can relate to the pain of growing up a child on the "chitlin circuit". Sammy was as versitile as any talent of his time; dancing, impressions, singing, drums, piano, trumpet and like Prince was all ear.

Overall, the show was comical!! They didn't show Prince enough!! But it was so much fun because we've gathered a nice little group here to watch Prince @ #7 and even had folks on the phone. When Prince's Kiss video aired, we all screamed!! LOL That video used to get so much play in my house growing up!! And we all fell more in love with our #2 artist, MJ!!! So glad he is #2!! I am shocked Elvis is not in the top 5, but whatever! As long as one of the 2 greatest artist ever represented, then I'm happy. Maybe next time Prince will be in the top 5 where he belongs!! About 50% of the list was a "who the ef is that..." for alot of us youngsters..I mean we had to rack our brains to figure out some of them. But anyway, fun to watch!! biggrin

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Cant argue with top6 but come on!! Prince is no way higher than Elvis, Madonna, Pink Floyd or u2! around ten or 11 I could live with but 7 is too high. He has only had 9 number one's in his career. Madonna blows him away and Elvis...COME ON!!

That would be nirvana, pure nirvana!!

yes wish they would have made this happened:guitar: bananadanceguitar

Don't get me wrong I respect the heck out of P and MJ, but at times, we gotta dig deeper to see their "roots".

These lists are designed to do what they are doing now: generate debate. Can you imagine whats being said by some on the Elvis message boards about this list?

Yeah the elvis folks are going crazy right now for sure. The Beach Boys and Springsteen should not be rated beneath Nirvana either. I love Jimi but despite his huge impact and innovation he musically isn't in the same league as Prince and he rated #6.

Watching the show now, if you love contemporary popular music this is a fun guilty pleasure. To be fair everyone on the list deserves the love the show dishes.

The list order? Well that's part of the fun too.

Rankings are a guilty pleasure, it he rankings are all subjective and very interesting to see what celebs/ musicians think. I get 90% of my e mails from boxing fans regarding my pund for pound rankings and all time rankings~i'm either a savant or a fuggin idiot lol.

don't like the list... to me a band is not an artist..

and please.. michael jackson on 3... he's not an artist.. he's a singer/dancer

neutral And what do you think an artist does? Last time I checked Prince does both of those too.

I know this is Prince board, and generally, like Michael Jackson boards, people will lean twards the artist the board is about.

However, you gotta give credit where credit is due. Personally I'd put MJ at number 2 or 1. Prince I would put at 5.

question cry

Btw guys, Michael Jackson is NOT white, dont even know why someone would say that.

Peace and love people, dont attack me.

cry gone 2 soon:pat: hugpat
