This list while subjective, is a testament to the growing appreciation for the man and his music.

I remember the original Vh1 special that aired and if I remember correctly, the list was voted on by fellow musicians at the time.

Whereas his persona and music in the 1990s was generally slept on by the public, he now is seen as the elder statesman of the 1980s. From the RRHOF performance in 2004, Grammys with Beyonce, and the SuperBowl, his public profile grew and the public figured out what us fans have known for years.

Everybody's complaining about Michael being #3 but has anyone noticed the REAL travesties?

I don't know, like Justin Timberlake, Mary J Blige, Mariah Carey, Beyonce and Alicia Keys being on the list?

and in regards to Michael, I think being a singer, dancer, songwriter, and producer makes someone an artist....

Not everyone is complaining about MJ's rank,it's just the bitter MFs that constantly try to undermine success of legendary artists in hopes that Prince might look better. Nothing people say or do on this forum is going to do that people. Prince's rank is actually quite good too, you think people would actually be happy about that, but noooo let's just act like 10 year olds rolleyes

And yeah, Timerlake....Beyonce..Alicia Keys? Give me a break! I'm not even sure they would be on a top 500 list lol

So if i go to watch a ballet, i'm not watching art?

If i'm listening to and appreciate a vocalist, that's not art?

If i'm watching somebody's vision thrown up on a big screen as a movie/video, that's not art?

If i'm reading lyrics or poetry, that's not art?

Of course he was an artist. Entertainment and art are interchangeable.

I wont say that this list is definitive, but they've got the right idea.

Here's the way it is: NO ONE from the 80s (Prince included) should be listed higher than any of the top 21 on this list on ANY list of the greatest ARTISTS of all time, based solely on the impact those folks had on the music scene.

NO ONE who came on the scene after Prince should be listed any higher than he is on ANY list.

As for Michael Jackson being listed higher than Prince on ANY ARTISTIC list...

28) Prince

29) blah

30) blah

.

.

35) Michael Jackson

36) Madonna

They got the right idea on this Rolling Stone list

i think it's kind of a coup for Prince to be at 7. Before Elvis, ha. I don't totally agree, but it's nice to see.

Meanwhile George Clinton was at 49, which was also a surprisingly strong showing.

I think we care because it's nice to see artists we love get respected publicly. And we worry that because no one ever talks about, say, Van Morrison, it means they've forgotten how great Moondance is. It's also fun to yell about how Paul Simon is better than Coldplay, whatever that means.

Justin Timberlake's at #66, after 2 albums. Sigh. One day Timbaland will get his due credit. Timbaland > Timberlake.

Lastly, the folks in music non prince are angry about Janet Jackson again. They're very intense about Janet Jackson over there. It's so funny.

I really don't enjoy Bruce Springsteen. Never have. It's the look, the voice, the music. He couldn't be from any other country on the planet he's so stereotypical. Okay, maybe Australia.

I also don't like celery. Never have.

It's funny but with both of the above I have really tried but ultimately my taste just won't accept them.

I have yet to hear any artists as innovative, artistic, or clever as the Beatles, so I do not see them ejected from the top spot anytime soon.

Some of the elder statesmen like Dylan get well deserved respect, but i see him and the likes of Elvis and MJ as having been eclipsed by many other artists long ago.

Mj is more a cultural icon than an artistic icon. Way too many artists eclipsed him almost immediately but did not have the kid appeal that has kept MJ relevant.

Prince's 80's work is almost Beatles-like un-paralleled. But his 90's and later work is so bad that the stigma from that work will keep him from ever reaching Beatles-like genius status. That's ok, top 20 is still pretty good.

not a bad list on first glance....jackson is too high but apart from that...the list is similar to acclaimedmusic's list of greatest artists of all time...

5 Led Zeppelin
6 Prince
7 Bruce Springsteen
8 The Who

42 Madonna
43 Pixies
44 Beck
45 Lou Reed
46 Roxy Music
47 Joni Mitchell
48 Kraftwerk
49 Sonic Youth
50 Blur

This list is INSANE. Whatever this acclaimedmusic thing is - they are TRIPPING and they do not know the soul, R&B scene at all. How the eff does Marvin top Stevie? That is just dumb. Same with PE ahead of JB.

Only some pseudo-intellectual coffee house bullshitters could list Bowie over Prince. Radiohead #10? REALLY? ...The Velvet Underground #13? Please. Ahead of U2? That makes tremendous sense.

Finally - I admit I don't know rock very well. Maybe someday someone will explain to me the greatness of the Rolling Stones and why they are so revered.

...I'm okay.

Why so much focus on Michael? Lists like this are always shitty. Watch your bloodpressure or something. lol

And everybody's list would be different. Nobody is ever gonna agree with any sort of list. Becaue whether you like an artist depends on personal opinion. Me, I don't give a shit much about The Beatles or Stones doesn't mean someone else feels the same way.

I guess it's what one likes and where one's from. Bowie has had far greater impact in England than Prince ever has. Home-grown talent, British eccentricities.

Rolling Stones. They were there at the beginning man! U2? Stadium band, albeit very, very good. Although only when the Edge is on form do their albums shine.

Haven't looked through the list in any depth but how about The Faces for their part and especially for the voice of Rod Stewart. Cracking band back in their day and no English pub band's set-list is complete without one of their tracks.

And what about ELO? Or Status Quo? Iron Maiden must surely be in there along with Black Sabbath and the likes. Highly influential bands or at least unique and popular.

Trouble with lists is no one really gives a fuck. Do they?

And MJ influential? More than the white rock bands? Maybe in some people's world but over here in old Blighty it's a different matter altogether. Got to any festival in this country and try and find some RnB or soul. It's Mighty White, Rock Out With Yer Cock Out in this country matey!

Agreed. Bowie was a very transformative figure in the history of rock music and his 1970s output is equal to Prince's in terms of artistic merit.
