The solo in So far so pleased is sick! It's on the album Rave...

Sexy MF and Kiss. The only two that are properly structured and should be classed as "solos".
Everything else is just guitar wankery and fireworks. Pentatonic ad infinitum.

Look to a player with more structure to their soloing. Something that stands out as a separate (albeit complimentary) piece is always much easier to learn. Crazy Little Thing Called Love is nice and short with a few little tricks to master. For something that really requires perfect note execution, will destroy your finger tips (until they harden up) and strengthen your fingers too learn the second solo from David Gilmour's On An Island. Starts at 5:05 (just learn the first part of it though). It'll teach you how to bend a note to perfect pitch if nothing else. No hiding behind masses of distortion either

Glad a few people mentioned Joy in Repetition. Definitely one of my favourites - the studio version is one of the best finishes to a song IMO Formally known as Mr_Nos on Housequake
Hate is such a strong word, I'm just disillusioned...

You know we completely differ in our opinion and appreciation of Prince as a guitar soloist banished so let's not get into that argument again

My favourite solo used to be I wanna treat you so bad, but then I found it it was actually written by Andre Simone So I'm gonna say I could never take the place of your man

Purple Rain, hands down, it really does something to me. I also love the guitar solo in Crimson and Clover and Let's Go Crazy.
My most euphoric moment of Prince playing the guitar came during the Musicology Tour, the LA show, the guitar playing during The Question of U/The One gives me chills up and down my spine and I have to hear it at least 10 times a day. I've always liked Prince's guitar playing, but it was this moment that I discovered the real joy of the guitar and have listened to it different ever since then!! Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

I do see what you mean about the solos. But I think Prince has some nicely constructed melodic solos... But yeah, he does go into overly loose improvising a lot...
I really like the solo in Dolphin...
When a solo is really good... a player won't deviate too much from it live...

There are really too many to mention here, including multiple live versions of Purple Rain. But if I had to choose it would be 'Just My Imagination' from Small Club. For twenty some years I thought it was Prince and Miko playing...as it turns out, it was just Prince. Beach House/Red House from the Paris New Morning Club show 1987.
Rockhard In A Funky Place. Nasty.
All the guitar playing in Computer Blue from the 1st Av 1983 gig.
Purple Rain from the 1985 Syracuse gig. Both of the solos he does before the singing starts.
The guitar solo on Batdance. First time I heard it was really loud in a Wrecka Stow, just before it came out. Almost blew my ears.
