I think all artists do that. Sometimes the time isn't right, or you feel that your baby isn't really finished or ready for the world, or you have to make choices because you can't use everythng you produced at once, or you want to keep some material for later times in case you'd need it, or you just remember that this unreleased something from earlier times would fit perfectly in this or that new project.
As a writer, i have a vault full of unpublished texts (finished or not), and that's totally on purpose. When i use something from it i sometimes decide to let people know, and some other times i decide to act as if it was a new baby, also depending on how reworked it is. The strings were added for the 93 hits version..There were horns instead of strings in the 1988 version...
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

No offense, but I don't see a point to this thread..MANY artists use songs they wrote anywhere between a year or two or 20 if they've been writing long enough...on their albums. I know Michael Jackson did that, Madonna, Whitney...I can't remember the rest, but it is common. They might start writing a song, put it away cause they can't think of how to finish it, then sudenly the lights come on and they are able to...

It was keys not horns IIRC.
Scififilmnerd thinks the strings were added for the original Rave album in 88 but he says "assumed" so i guess he ain't sure. Do u have any info that supports the idea that it was added in 93? A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

It's pretty self explanatory.
I think a couple of people are thinking there's some sort of nit-picking going on here or something (because of the word 'borrowing' in the thread title?) - this is just a discussion about older tracks appearing on albums years after they were first written, no one is saying this is bad or lazy.
