"Dolphin" on the Letterman show

I have read so many glowing reports of this performance, but I have never seen it sad

Who wants to hook a brother up? (and while you at it throw in the Grammy performance too... did he perform at the Oscars?)

I just dug out an old, old video that I taped back in 95??? of the Letterman show...

Couldn't believe I still had it.

The solo kicks ass.

He seems kind of pouty or pissed off at the start...quite different to the at-ease-with-himself-and-band Prince of the recent-ish Leno performance. Anyway, Letterman introduced him by poking fun at the name change and the fact that he was at the time promoting an album (The Gold Experience) "that will be never be released".

Bottom line for this performance: Made me want to buy the Gold Experience...and I remember this is when I first started being floored by Prince's guitar playing and really got into his music.

i remember the Performance. He&the Band did there thing&He played&at the end Mayte I Believe dragged me off the stage it was a trip.He always did trip out stuff on letterman like that.I remember doing "Dinner with Delores" on Piano&at the end saying free TLC.but "Dolphin" was pretty straight forward performance.I think from the Gold Album Live the best Performances were at the AMA's were He did His Medley of "Billy Jack Bitch",I Hate U".Bland&Sonny were soing there thing same with Mr.Hayes.those Cats were laid-Back.

One of my teachers in college was the one who made Mayte's angel wings for that performance.

being a musician, i basically have a "lot" of prince tv appearances.. i've been taping them for years.. and that particular performance was very good.. true he was probably mad, or unsure of his next steps.. but i see it being the propaganda at that particular time.. plus the loss of his son, him and mayte, warner bro's.. i think he wanted that album released and warner's bro's for some time interceded.. that album was the first breath of him "i think".. trying to take control.. he was still in the battle or "slave" face.. i think he is much happier now.. if we all could aspire to be the true person's that we are whether it be musician, parent, artist, whatever.. we truly are happier people.. i struggle at artistic expression on my material also.. it's tough because media "brainwashes" folk into liking a "certain" type of music. soundscan, rolling stone, vibe, all i feel feed into this "big brotha" so to speak.

If you want a really good, and stereo, copy of the Letterman tc performance i recomend you look for "NPG-TV Channel 3" 1CD by Moonraker.

A fine quality copy can be found on that.

I just pulled this one out and watched it. It was a great performance, I could really have done without the Mayte in the angel outfit - and him falling to the floor doing a scene reminiscent of the UTCM death scene.
