I should really have named this thread "More instrumental music please." There have been quite a few different comments regarding whether Prince plays jazz or not or whether it can be called jazz. This was not really the intention of the thread. I agree with your statement about not caring what his instrumental music is labled. Music is music after all.

N.E.W.S and C-Note are my favorite instrumentals by him..If he makes more like those, then I am all for it...I would love if he did another concept instrumental album too.

It's funny that u compare Steely Dan to Prince: 2 me The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale always was Prince's "I can sound like Donald Fagen" album (and it sounded great IMO!) A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

It depends on the line up, honestly.
Most of the funk jazz albums I own, I appreciate not because of the sole artist they were released from, but from the collective work of session musicians that artist collaborated with. Hell, funk jazz was founded on the notion of a collective work(something that contradicts the "one man band" factor in Prince' music).
For example, Herbie Hancock made a helluva classic out of Head Hunters, and personally, I don't think it would've been that good had it not been for the musicians he invited to make the record - and whats even better, the fact that he invited "funk" musicians to play jazz.
The point is, he took a chance on hiring musicians, gave them an idea of what he wanted and trusted them to put their own spin to it without interfering,,,,,mind you, I'm not making a comparison, I'm trying to make a point here, Prince would've recorded a "one man band" album and let so & so overdub their parts like robots and sent them home, to me personally, this calculated setting doesn't give me the "funk jazz" feel.
The closest thing Prince came to "Jazz funk" was the Moon studio sessions he did with Andre Cymone and the tuff he did for 94' East. I love Madhouse, but I don't think they were "funk jazz" albums though.

Now THAT project is a collective effort - and something I'm dying to hear.

I pretty much gurantee that that "garbage" is multitudes better then anything u have and will ever produce. So I would hate to have to label your music but it must be less than garbage.

LOL It's funny how you're so defensive over this garbage that you'll attack anything I do on the side. It reeks of desperation on your part. Please stay on topic.

Desperation or need of attention causes people to put down other people here on ernest.org. It is unfair of you to do so.

I would love another "jazz/funk/fusion" album from the purple man. I love NEWS & like others I feel the Madhouse albums were overrated but I do enjoy them nonetheless. However, I don`t think he needs to put traditional song writing on hold.... he seems quite capable of producing both. Whether u call it jazz or not all that really matters is if u like it or not & I think enough people have enjoyed NEWS to say that another addition along the same line would be enjoyed as well. I`m a huge fan of instrumental funk like Soulive, Galactic, MMW, Scofield, Dr John, Herbie Hancock, even love jazz from the likes of Miles Davis, Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Stanley Clarke amoung many mnay others whether it is true jazz or not it doesn`t matter, what does matter is enjoying the sounds that hit your ears & I`m all for the exploration of music.

You're miserable. You attacked ME. I stayed on topic by discussin, and even dissing, the music I dislike. You made it personal, and you think I'M desperate for attention? Dude, look in the mirror. Your trolling is giving you major wrinkles in your forehead. You're not cool, or funny, or anything remotely interesting. You're just L A M E.
How's that for making it personal, son?

On 5th December '87 Prince, Sheila E, Levi Seacer Jr, Dr Fink, Atlanta Bliss and Eric Leeds played an unannounced show at the Fine Line nightclub in Minneapolis. Billed as The Fine Liners, they replaced the original band for that evening Beej Chaney and The Vees. Prince and band concentrated on jazz infused rock and funk instrumentals. Following a 15 min instrumental funk "warm up" the band launched into a long version of the Madhouse track "Eleven," they then played an uptempo instrumental track before returning to "Eleven" for a few mins. Next was the Jimi Hendrix instrumental "Villanova Junction" and an instrumental version of the Temptations track "Just My Imagination." There then followed another instrumental jam and an eight min version of the Miles Davis track "Freddie Freeloader," they then played an instrumental version of "Jack U Off" which included a lenghthy drum solo from Sheila E. Next up was a nine min instrumental version of "Chain Of Fools" by Aretha Franklin, this track also feautured snippets of "Cold Sweat" and "Its Gonna Be A Beautiful Night." The gig closed with a mostly instrumental version of "Housequake" with additional chants by Prince.
Great gig, what a joy it would be to have an official release of this show. Info from The Vault.

I think 4DF's Fine Line boot is MORE than satisfying, but to each his own.

I like Prince's jazz work. A jazz, soul, funk, rap, and/or blues album. [Edited 9/2/10 14:06pm]

The 4DF Fine line is very good, i think what we meant was it would be a great show to have as a soundboard. I cannot seem to find it in lossless, but the version i have is still enjoyable, top show.

Many fans of this type of Prince music will no doubt have this, but i was put on to this just recently by a very kind orger (you know who you are), thanks again. Hearing the Madhouse band in rehearsal is a treat indeed, and in such great quality sound is fantastic too. If you like Madhouse and have not yet heard these rehearsals, give them a try, You will not be dissapointed. Madhouse really comes alive in these recordings.

The b-sides and remixes from 8 & 16 are included too, a nice little bonus.

Ha ha, never heard one of his instrumental albums before. I do like some instumental although I wouldn't associate Prince with it (not that I don't think he's capable, just different).
Wish I could hear 'em. | |

The two Madhouse albums are long out of print. Copies on cd and vinyl crop up from time to time on ebay, amazon and other sources. Whether they are genuine Paisley Park product is a bit of a gamble. I think that N.E.W.S is also out of print, though i am not 100%. It can still be found quite cheaply. And C-Note and Expectation were download only albums available from the NPGMC, they can still be downloaded though, if you know where to look.
