If you have an MP3 player, do you list TAFKAP album's as O(+> Just wondering. I thought about it, but I haven't. Have you?

nah. because then he's under two artist listings and who wants to go back and forth. there are solutions to that with "album artist" and some of the sorting options, but honestly, what's the point? i did title the symbol album with the though.

I do that with the album as well.
I don't do that cause it's all Prince but I DO have listings for Prince and the Revolution (just the three albums) AND Prince and NPG (which includes the albums that didn't include all that much Prince, either).

I asked this question earlier this year. Here's the thread: http://prince.org/msg/7/330766 Scroll down to Boris Fishpaw's response. It worked quite well for me, and if you really want to list 1993-2000 stuff as or the three NPG albums as New Power Generation, but still want them all under "Prince", that'll be the way to do it.

NPG ft New Power Generation Ft Prince And don't get me started on 'collaboration' albums like SOTT, Batman, Graffiti Bridge, Emancipation, 3121 etc...it shotguns the album all over the place

All is under Prince, except for protégés. What would I do if I wanted to shuffle through all Prince songs? If I sorted everything under the band names, I would have to make a playlist of the bands first before I could start. Now I just click Prince and shuffle.
I know what the bands were called when he recorded the albums. I don't need the ID3-tags to remind me of that... You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

Yes, I list the Prince albums as "Prince", the Prince and the Revolution albums as "Prince and the Revolution" and the albums as "0(+>" etc.
I also like to keep everything in chronological order too, which is easy to do. Just use the "sort as" fields...
Here's a few examples to show what I mean...
Artist: Prince Album: 1999 Sort artist: Prince Sort album: 1982 1999
Artist: Prince and the Revolution Album: Purple Rain Sort artist: Prince Sort album: 1984 Purple Rain
Artist: 0(+> Album: The Gold Experience Sort artist: Prince Sort album: 1995 Gold Experience
That way, all the albums appear together in chronological order as they should, without the need to mislabel them. I also use this field to sort artists into correct alphabetical order, so Sheila E. would appear under "E" rather than "S" for Sheila etc.
I also use the "Album artist" field to stop iTunes splitting up albums that feature guest artists on particular songs or filing them at the end as 'compilations'.
I usually spend a few minutes redoing the listing for any album that I rip onto iTunes, as there's usually mistakes in the info that automatically downloads from gracenote that needs correcting. Plus I often find my own artwork to use too, as the "get artwork" option often finds crap quality pictures or completely wrong artwork (unless it's a fairly new major label release, in which case the artwork is usually perfect).

yep and that goes 4 every artist i have in my windows media player ...if madhouse opened up the concert i list it as madhouse/prince and if GCS or chaka khan opened up for him it's listed as Graham Central Station/ to reflect the time period of the recording man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Proteges like Sheila E or The Time would be in their own category.
New Power Generation albums are filed under Prince. All other Prince albums are filed under Prince. I don't give a fuck if he called himself Dinner Table or Armoire for a few years. It's Prince, he's Prince, end of it. (That means Goldnigga, Exodus (barf) and NPS are all filed as Prince albums in my devices.)

i call the scribble stuff prince, all the normal albums prince, but time and madhouse etc are named as such. but then itunes fucks up everything so my ipod is just a fucking mess. you would have thought they could just play songs in folders or something. i have my music organised perfectly in folders and by filename, but apple ignore all that and want tags, after i spent 10 years doing fine without itunes and collecting shitloads of music and organising it well

I list it all under Prince... any deviation in his name is on the album title eg:
"Purple Rain (Prince & The Revolution)" "Exodus (The New Power Generation)" "Kamasutra (The NPG Orchestra)" etc etc

I would have barfed on "Goldnigga". I can barely listen to that album. Besides the interludes, it's not terrible.

thats what i do... | |

be careful with that. if you use iTunes, it has a way of "helpfully" re-setting some of the "sort" and "album artist" fields occasionally when a new update is released. the kicker is, it'll do it to random tracks. the last time it did this, I was up to 30,000+ tracks that I had to check. I'm still not sure I completely I got it put pack the way I wanted it.

Prince, and the NPS album are all listed as Prince, but I have the albums sorted chronologically. I also have a "Prince [Studio Outtakes]" and "Prince [Live Bootlegs]" artist listing to keep that stuff separated out.
The Time, Madhouse, Sheila E, Jill Jones, etc. are all listed under their own artist name, but every Prince-related track, either his own or ones he wrote, produced, played on, remixed, etc., whether its released under his own name or as a protege, is tagged as "Prince" in the genre field, so that if I have a need to just find Prince stuff on my iPod, I go to the Genre menu and look through that.
I stumbled upon this solution when the number of tracks in my iTunes exceded the amout of space on my iPod and started automatically synching based on genre. I have two other people's iPods that I keep populated and anything that I've put on there for them gets tagged with their name in the Genre field. And anything of of my own that I don't want on my iPod has "Unsync" in the genre field. So I just synch my iPod by unchecking the genre fields that I don't want on my own iPod.

Shiiit, all that "how to sort his discography" stuff is seriously driving me crazy - and i don't even have an i-pod!
I'm totally anal about these things as well, so i was bothered with it all the weekend..
I think i have found a perfect way now. It looks cool, it makes sense logically, and i really like it because it's the easiest way to have to complete Prince collection sorted.
I now have EVERYTHING Princey (and I mean EVERYTHING) tagged as "Madhouse", except for the Madhouse albums, which are tagged as "Larry Graham". Off to dinner now.

Bollocks to sorting Prince's recordings depending on what name he was going by when he recorded it. He's Prince and he always will be even if he goes around calling himself whatever!!!
