Tonight, I Pulled It Out. My VINYL, you pervs. With my recent Prince finds, I had a hankering to listen to all the vinyl I've collected over the years. I've pulled out random records from my shelf to play. Right now, for the first time since owning it in 10+ years, I'm playing Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic. Man, how I've missed vinyl. We always talk about how we love it, but how often do we actually PLAY it?
I have my new Madhouse 16 album that I plan to play just 1 side of. SUCH a warm sound on the Rave album right now. I'm playing Vinyl 1, side 2, which is "Hot With U" through "The Sun, The Moon, & Stars". I also yanked out some Rufus & CHaka Khan, The Family, Kajagoogoo, The Jazz Singer, "Glam Slam" 12", and the album from 1992. Too bad I can't successfully chip out Tony M. on the vinyl! haha
Pull out your vinyl this weekend, and play it!!!!
PS I TOTALLY need The Gold Experience on vinyl. I bet the vinyl warms up that harsher & crispy digital sound on that album.

I have quite a few platters in my collection now, but it is all new and unplayed, and that is the way i want it to stay. I'm sure it sounds very nice and warm indeed, but i prefer to look at mine, not play it. Have a good time anyway though.

Does being 16 make a difference to how it sounds?

Also pulled out Morris Day's "Fishnet" 12", The Jackson's Destiny, ELO's Time, Tom Jones. I love this ELO album. It was my introduction to ELO back in 1982 or so (whenever it came out).

You know you're old when you bought records that came out the year I was born.

I have that vinyl from 1981 Later on CD and even later on expanded remastered CD. Never played the vinyl again.

I love the remastered disk, but still loved the vinyl.

I work in a Wrecka Stow, so I'm surrounded by Vinyl constantly. My Prince vinyl collection could be bigger, I've got a lot of the 12" singles from the 80s, a few boots, and about 6 albums or so. I'd love to have a pristine Batman or Graffiti Bridge record, a Rainbow Children. Was NEWS ever released on LP?
Think my fac prince LP would have to be the Purple Medley, packaging is great!
Anyway, I picked up a few great nonprince records this week: Ornette Coleman - New York is Now; Onaje (An Australian Jazz Quartet) - Waltz for Stella, and Archie Shepp - Little Red Moon.
Oh, and Alexander O'Neill - Hearsay. Which is kinda crap. Take it - like Clarence said:
"I got a million of them - all different U know."

No! You work in a record store/shop. Not a "Wrecka Stow."

There was another thread recently about vinyl and I think it discussed LoveSexy quite a bit. I too pulled it out last week and really enjoyed the sound of my vinyl copy. There seems to be so much more space between the intruments - it almost feels alive.
I also put on my vinyl copy of TRC but that doesn't seem to have the same feel. I know nothing about the recording process but I wonder if TRC was put onto vinyl as an after thought, I always get the impression with this album (during busy parts) like Last December, that the sounds is a little compressed and clipped. Might be how it was intended though.
Still, all my 80's vinyl sounds FANTASTIC.

I also picked up the Kiss reissue 12" with the plain black reverse sleeve paid £3 for the two records B-) if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

Records are meant to be listened to, looking at them is just an added affection. If you keep them unplayed to retain their monetary "value", I'd suggest there are better investments to make for financial reward.

I hated saving up enough money when I was younger to get a new record, only to bring it home and it skipped like a mofo! Nothing ruins the sound of a new record than skipping a lot.

I can never get mine to curve and have good looking waves/bends in them. Any secrets? I really wanna do one again. I bought a Midnight Star record years ago and the record in the jacket was not the one ON the jacket. I figured it's a toss off and I could do the bowl thing from it.

If you don't want other people's opinions, don't put yours out there... Ok?
That said, Okay, I get it, you "collect" them to look at them, I guess playing them would make them not look as good, I don't know... I collect them, too. I collect them because I like listening to them, and, yes, looking at the artwork & liner notes WHILE listening to them. I've heard of people keeping them sealed and not playing them to preserve their value, which I mentioned above, is usually not a very good investment. I've never heard of any other reason for not playing them, so I made an assumption. That happens... [Edited 8/22/10 16:57pm] Don't hate your neighbors. I ordered Graffiti Bridge off the internet the other day on vinyl. It was described in perfect condition. When it arrived there was a huge crease through IC's face in the top left hand corner which was quite heartbreaking...at least it was only graffiti bridge lol Still collecting that vinyl

I just picked up my 3rd copy of TGE on vinyl. It is such a killer record! This one will sit on the shelf in mint condition. You HAVE to find yourself a copy!

Be sure to check out the group LEO. It is a group of musicians turned producers that are collaborating on an ELO inspired project. One of them is Joh Fields of Greezy Meal fame (Minneapolis group that was big locally after the Gold era NPG was let go around 1997).
