....yes but shit is brown....isnt it?...... ... ....i think the point is that we all know its a prince release....the same as the other two npg albums are prince but without him on lead vocal all the time...new power soul is a lightweight party album ...thats why he didnt call it an official prince album....when he wanted to release jazzy stuff.....he called it madhouse....when he wanted to release some shit female based music ....he called it vanity/appolonia (insert some names here)....and when he wanted pure funk .....he called it the time.....and on and on......its prince.....but they are NOT official prince releases so dont call it a prince album....thats all i am saying...

Whose albums are The Time, Vanity 6, 8 and Kamasutra anyway ?
It's a NPG album, period. Now we all know what that means.
Now my theory is that the reason behing this choice is Larry. Either Larry said "i'm gonna release GCS2000 as Graham Central Station" and Prince replied "Then mine will be a NPG album", either it was Prince's idea to have both albums released under the bandnames, but i'm quite convinced that it was credited to NPG in order to fit with the GCS name, as some kind of a joke or something. so should albums by vanity 6, apollonia 6, jill jones, eric leeds, ingrid chavez, carmen electra, mayte, the family, mazarati, good question, dale, tony lemans, mavis staples should be under prince as well? man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Will George Clinton's Paisley Park catalogue, too?
And does that as well apply to all the other artists you file under P-Funk?
Or do you keep Clintons Paisley Park releases seperate from his others?

nto well known but there was a BET special that had Morris Hayes, Rhonda Smith and Mayte promoting newpowersoul man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Agree 100%.
But, NPS is the only one with Prince alone on the cover, and handling all the vocals.

Everybody else is free to file their music collections ANY way they want...
For me, I have a section that has everything EXCEPT my Prince & P-Funk collections, then I have a seperate shelf that contains those 2 collections.
The Prince collection is seperated into 3 sections: Prince, associated artists and various artist collections that contain Prince or associated tracks.
I choose to include the NPG releases in the Prince section rather than the protege section. I could see placing Madhouse in either section, Prince or Protege, but choose protege.
My P-Funk collection is also split 3 ways: George, Parliament, Funkadelic & All-Stars in the first section, all other associated artists & projects (like Bootsy, etc...) in the second & various artists collections third.
George Clinton's Paisley Park releases I have in my P-Funk section (same rack, couple shelves up). Why? Because, they belong in both collections and George had more to do with them than Prince.
Now, that said,
Why does anybody but me care how I file my music. Seems strange to me. If Prince and albums are filed together, how is it wrong to include NPG? As far as personel and writing/production credit, how is Gold Nigga different from D&P? Exodus from Gold? Emancipation from NPS?
The bottom line: The NPG albums can correctly be filed under New Power Generation OR Prince. They're both right!! What difference does it make how someone else chooses to file them? Do what you want...

Exactly. People can file things anyway they they want.
I see nothing wrong with filing the NPG albums in with the Prince albums, or filing them separately. I just think it's stupid to file one of the NPG albums with the Prince albums but file the other two separately. It should be all of them, or none of them IMO.
Personally, I file all my music in alphabetical-chronological order. But then I do have a lot more music than most people and I'd lose track of what I had if I didn't keep everything that way.

I treat NPS as a Prince album. I treat Goldnigga and Exodus as protege albums, a la the Time, where we know it's him, but the main vocals are by someone else.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Personally, I put a lot of stock into who is singing lead vocals. I think a lot of people do.
I mean, there is a BIG difference between Sinead singing "Nothing Compares 2U" and Prince singing it. Similarly, there is a big difference to songs being sung by Sonny, rapped by Tony M, or being vocalized by Prince.
This is a huge reason why, to me, New Power Soul is more of a Prince album than the previous two. Besides the little things like his face being the only one on the cover, etc.

its deffinately a NPS album, but considering prince sings almost all the vocals on it and his picture is on the cover, I consider it a Prince release on my iPod. The Madhouse or other NPS music is not of interest to me.
so for my own opinion and definition, a prince song or album is defined when prince's vocals are present. I kind of think of a love bizarre as a prince song.

Kinda like who's song is A Love Bizarre, Sheila's or Prince's.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
^^^ Not if you read the credits. It's on a Sheila E. album, and credited as a duet with Prince (as is "Yellow").
NewPowerSoul is a New Power Generation album.

uh huh. and if you look at the same Sheila E. album, there's barely even any mention of Prince's involvement, both in writing, performing and producing. and "Sugar Walls" was written by a guy named Alexander Nevermind, right? surely you know that the liner notes are the least reliable source for writing/performing credits when it comes to Prince music.

yes, his face on the cover, his symbol on the cover, he sings lead.
I agree--especially about the lead vocals. bria's album does not seem like a prince album to me, not does chaka kahn's, nor do the time's, vanity 6, even though I know he was heavily involved in them. The vocals really do make a difference to me.
But yes technically it's an NPG album if you are simply subscribing to what you read in the credits. My Legacy

Voice is an instrument. What about Kamasutra, is it a Prince album or a NPG Orchestra album? Technically it's NPG Orchestra but there's no real sense in wondering about that: Prince did everything. Same goes with the albums u mention: Prince wasn't heavily involved in The Time, Vanity 6 or Elixer: he did everything, including telling the singer how to sing.

kamasutra is definately Prince, but it has no importance or place in my Prince collection because it doesnt have his vocal on it. On the other hand, Get it up by the time has his vocal all over the place, and I know its not a Prince song, but it features in my Prince collection.

although it's labled as an NPG album,I consider it just another Prince album.....a mediocre one,at that.

Speaking of Romance 1600, I was recently listening to it, haven't played it straight through in years even though it's a personal favourite P. album for me - and I was really hearing for the first time (or remembering?) how prominent Prince's vocals are on Dear Michaelangelo - singing the whole of the song, just under Sheila's own vocals.
That's one thing I've always really liked about Prince's layered backing vocals, how each vocal is different, not just sang exactly the same, so each one can be heard in the mix, they're not just stacked on top of each other to achieve a wall of sound, it's much more intricate than that, gives them a lot of depth and width.

4 those who say Newpower Soul is a "Prince" album more than Exodus or Goldnigga, because Prince sings on NPS and the one who sings make it the one whose album it is and that's it.
I have 2 questions: - What if Prince had released Bria's album under his own name, with a picture of him on the cover, making Bria the lead singer of a "Prince" album, would you claim it's a Bria album despite Prince's name on the cover? - What if Prince released a whole album with guest vocalists and none of his, would you refuse to consider it a Prince album despite his name being on the cover?
There's nothing crazy in my questions: several artists have released albums under their own name with only another or guest singers (Me'Shell Ndegeocello on one album, Seelenluft, Ryuichi Sakamoto and many others...)

All right, I'll play again.
1) Still a Bria album. Filed accordingly. 2) Prince-related but not a Prince album. Would go in the chunk of Prince-related discs that come immediately after all my Prince stuff. This is where Exodus and Goldnigga currently reside.

To quote myself from that unnecessary dupe post:
I find it this kind of debate interesting because it is so much like my internal debate when I decide how I want to file or organize my music collections, specifically my Prince & Prince related music collection.
In a world where many people I know don't even organize their music by artist or alphabet, much less spend time or thought on details like this one, it's kind of cool to discuss and debate with others ideas that most don't care about.
I believe most people that will even have this discussion have to see a little of both sides of the "argument" to even care enough to comment. That's the only reason for giving a crap... we see that their is validity to each option and we've given it enough thought to make our own decisions as to which option is most valid for ourselves.
It should be fun to debate and discuss with others that have gone through the same process. However, the fun is sucked right out by those that feel so strongly that there is only one right answer and that it is not up for debate. The fun suckers fall on both sides of the discussion. Why they even find the discussion interesting enough to participate in, let alone try to dominate it, is a mystery to me.
Basically, I think everyone is right. You should file/organize your music in a system designed specifically for you, so you can find what you are looking for when you are looking. NPS is a New Power Generation album. NPS is a Prince album. Put it where you want. If that decision is too hard, buy 2 copies and put one in each slot...

I consider it to be both, in the same way The Vault, Mpls Sound, and Chaos and Disorder are "Prince" albums. I don't think he considers them to be anything more than some jams he wanted to put out(and fulfill his WB contract in the process), instead of ending up in his Paisley Park vault, unheard. The exception to this is "The One" which I think he considers a cut above the rest (and I agree). Don't get me wrong, I like many of the songs on these albums- especially The Vault, but I don't consider them to be his best output by any means. In some ways, I think his lack of related artist releases (Sheila E, The Time, the NPG, etc) in the last ten or so years has led him to release more "jam" type albums like NPS and Mpls Sound. Just my opinion.

It's DEFINITELY a geek thing & that's why it's fun
My albums r filed thru Windows since i ripped everything, there4 my Prince And The Revolution albums r filed AFTER the Prince albums, and so on. Newpower Soul therefore is a New Power Generation album on my computer and that's a period, because well, i'm not gonna write it's Prince if it's not what's written on the cover. I'm a huge Bill Laswell fan but if Laswell says that one album is an album by "Axiom Ambient" or "Sacred System" or "Tabla Beat Science", i'm naming the folder by such name.
This is how i file things. NOW if u ask me to make a Lenny Kravitz discography, i'd say that the album Vanessa Paradis is part of it, between Mama Said and Are You Gonna Go My Way, the same way i'll always consider Prince's side-projects as part of his own discography in the sense that they are HIS product and give another color to the main painting.
So yeah, officially Newpower Soul IS an NPG album and there's absolutely NO reason IMO to make it more a Prince album than the other NPG albums or The Time, Vanity 6, 8, Times Squared or Child Of The Sun.
