I'm still the same person but I'm more aware of my relationship with the creator then I was before I got into P's music and P's music was my first step out of Hardcore Hip Hop. For over 20yrs of my life, I didn't listen to anything else but NY Hip Hop, I lived it, I breathed it.
My first slow jam I fell in love with was 'Do me Baby' ... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I'm not fresh clay.
I just enjoy P's music when it WAS enjoyable and don't let his stupidity percolate my self.

Once I began listening to his music, a lot of the stuff I liked beforehand suddenly seemed inferior.

he showed me the way to funk Free Your Mind...And Your Ass Will Follow

The same for me. I love him for that! I find a lot of the stuff I used to love mediocre at most compared to most funk You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

he made me better at music, a better listener, a better writer, a better producer, and a better person. this too shall pass

I don't know if I'd consider these changes, but I certainly consider them improvements.
The majority of the closest and dearest friends in my life (online and "real" life) are because of Prince and his music. That, to me, is HUGE.
Prince has also (and continues to) inspired a lot of my artwork. I'm even currently working on a grouping of paintings inspired (in one way or another) by his music.

Although, I would not say changed, more like influenced my work in the following ways: I would say strive for the best, challenge yourself, and follow that "inner" voice. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

This is fantastic. You believe prince has inspired you on this? Surely this is the bastard child of Picasso and Gaugin-it is lovely-I think you give Prince too much credit. Fantastic

That piece of John's is called Joy in Repetition.
The photo does NOT do it justice.
When he showed her to me in his studio and told me -- nanoseconds before I was about to scream she was mine -- that she was already sold..... my heart... evaporated
the only "comfort" is that she went to a fellow purple pal from our NPGMC days who truly loves art

as for Prince.....
I was a guitar fan before I knew much about him; my dad & a couple of uncles play guitar & other instruments, and they introduced me to diff. kinds of musicians & genres throughout my childhood.. my parents had his 1st album, but I wasn't really a fan until my best friend copied her big brother's Prince record collection on tape for me in the '80s
Positivity helped me... keep it together... when I had a lot of shit to go through in '88... someone I loved was dying at the same time I was dealing with my parents breaking up ~ during the transition from high school to college. I will forever have a great appreciation and respect for P as a musician, songwriter, etc.
and like John, NPGMC brought some truly amazing ppl into my life ppl I'd cut a bitch for Hag. Muse. Web Goddess. Taurean. Tree Hugger. Poet. Professional Nerd. Geek.

Thank you! Maybe I should be clearer on the inspiration part. Most of my work begins with words (usually my own, but sometimes a phrase or title or lyric I've heard). Visually, Prince doesn't inspire my work (you are on the $$ listing Picasso and Gaugin as influences ). But lyrically and musically he does. Sometimes I hear a lyric of his ("I'm blinded by the daisies in your yard") or hear a sound or melody (Alexa deParis) or a song title (Love Like Jazz) that I feel I must paint (always in my style, I will never paint something to mimic an album cover or video ) The title of this painting is Joy in Repetition ( hence the love me, love me, love me's...). That song makes me think of being lost in a feeling and that makes me think of falling, in the stylistic way people spiral in slow motion into nothingness in movies. Or just being suspended in or enveloped by a feeling (like a high). [Edited 8/27/10 11:39am]

Ha I see. It's strange you should say that as I think that could be the difference in the newer music that people are missing. Obviously I am no artist but the Prince of old did actually transport you. I feel exactly the same way as you with ATWIAD and also with Parade andSOT-I could almost visualise another place and as a teenager at the time I think you do need somewhere to retreat. People go on about his songcraft now but I think that is the irony-it is now he is writing SONGS-it was then that he wasn't. They were moods and in your case -landscapes

Interesting point there about how his music has changed - ATWIAD certainly isn't a conventional album like the kind me makes now...back then it wasn't about a four minute pop song so much, but more about instrumentation, the creation of a mood and the transportation of the mind...
No so surprising that the rumours of drug use circulate around this era, but I don't know the truth of it of course...I like to think Prince was just so inspired by everyone around him and post Purple Rain he could afford to indulge himself.
Anyway..on topic, I got into him at the age of 13 and I was very impressionable. Watching him gave me confidence that I badly needed in real life, made me change some of my mannerisms long term and definitely inspired me to dance all by myself in the bedroom...to the extreme of performing the entire SOTT album in a long sweaty jam in front of my bedroom mirror!
Yup..he's changed me, and changed the way others view me after I've hit the dance floor.. lol "I'm much too hot to be cool"

He's made my ears and the auditory parts of my brain super happy...has inspired a lot of wardrobe choices (for better and worse )...and brought lots of lovely people into my life. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
