So, you are saying that because ATWIAD featured drums, synths, guitars and same personell, that makes it the same as Purple Rain?!!
Paisley Park is nothing like any track on PR. Condition of the Heart is nothing like any track on PR. Tambourine.......you get my drift?
As people have already noted, with hindsight and the huge catalogue we now have of Prince's work to compare too, you can see some similarities but, really, all you can say is that it is another "Prince" album. Stylistically, PR and ATWIAD are very different and certainly, at the time, it was completely different to any album that Prince had produced thus far. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

He's hard to please - he doesn't like most of LoveSexy either!
Mind you, there is something to be said about experiencing it "at the time". I mean, I 'm not saying you can't enjoy albums that you discovered years later, but the context of some works and when they were released can be important to the listening experience. That's something we don't get to choose, but you are lucky if you were there. Joe wasn't even born when ATWIAD came out! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Another thread to fill the vacuum.
I guess the question is rhetorical as otherwise it is inane. Again I haven't read the posts because it is a waste of time.
You obviously weren't there at the time or you would understand the stupidity of your question. Life is perfect when you are content with being

I find this HILARIOUS cuz I was one of the few who made an objective list of songs for the "Songs that everybody loves but you don't" thread; there, MANY people gladly included classics like Let's Go Crazy, Delirious, Kiss, or even Adore. That thread truly amazed me, in a negative manner...
Well, yeah, I was born in 1985, just when ATWIAD was released, so you can say I was converted during the late-90s or during the Musicology-3121 comeback, even if I've always been exposed to his music (my big sisters are big fans).
But, talking about longtime fans, it's funny how, now, in 2010, there are fans who, despite being longitme believers, can rereview Prince's albums of the 80s in an objective manner (and the general consensus is: ATWIAD, Lovesexy and Batman are his "lesser", "weird" and/or "rushed" albums of the 80s) and, on the other hand, there are people who still refuse to rereview New Power Soul as a weak album...so I guess: to each his own
That said, for me, Tambourine, Dance On, Ronnie Talk to Russia, Lemon Crush and The Arms of Orion are his 5 worst songs of the 80s (officially released...)

I love Tambourine, the sparse sounds stripped wild drums, the tambourine, the nasty finger cymbols, the poetry of it, and the screaches
Tambourine seriously reminds me of the lusty Tick Tick Bang(unreleased)

The drums on Tambourine are EPIC. Before that we really didnt know about P's drums skills. Few us at the time heard Irrestible Bitch or some of his early drum work pre-1980.

sounds very different to me from PR. This and Parade sound similar to me. I wish he'd done more songs within this "style"... [Edited 8/20/10 9:11am]

I think what he said was that, if he wanted to do PR 2, he could have just opened the album with the solo from Let's Go Crazy played backwards. He wasn't saying he actually used it to open the album.
And while the flangy Linn drums are indeed similar to Purple Rain, I think people were expecting him to come out with something like "Oh Sheila." THAT, to me, would have been Purple Rain part 2. Boris was dead on it, it's only in hindsight that the similarities stand out so much. Actually, he said how easy it would've been to open ATWIAD in the same key as "Lets Go Crazy". Which is odd, seeing as "Purple Rain" is the last cut on that album. But in response to the OP, while there are some similaities in the sounds used, PR2 it ain't. As someone mentioned, hindsight is 20/20, and you can listen to it more objectively now. But it still is a departure from his previous work. Just like (almost) every album was.

2 me, ATWIAD & Parade sound very different. The style of the era is similar though.
2 me Dream Factory and Parade would have been a much more similar in feel, but SOTT feels like a combination of 1999 Purple Rain ATWIAD Parade (& Dream Factory)
