Searched up Prince and it told me that it has 20Ten! The store is right in my town, so I'm gonna pick it up tonight.

I'm pretty sure 5that 20Ten is actually available everywhere, just search in your local area for lesser known music retail stores.

On the back of the cd cardboard cover it says, right under the NPG copyright "for promotional use only. Not for resale"

It's not being sold "offically" in retail stores such as HMV in Canada. Either the online store ordered them through the European papers or people who did not want the cds gave them to that store.

You'd be pretty wrong. 20Ten is available as a bootleg in the US. That's what it boils down to. Luv4u pointed out, quite correctly, about the "Not for resale" on the back. I have a copy, and that is what it says. (And no I didn't pay for mine - it's FREE.)

Once it passes to an individual there is nothing that can stop a retailer from accumulating unwanted free CDs and selling them as slightly used.

Yeah, record shops in the US can legally sell "promotional" CDs as long as they qualify as used items. In the case of any 20TEN discs being sold by a retailer - that's perfectly OK under copyright law, since they are automatically second-hand after they were purchased with the newspapers. Putting "Promo Only" basically amounts to nothing more than a strong-arm tactic to deter legal second-hand sales - or to let potential purchasers know that it was not meant as a commercial item.

Kind of the same difference. It's not for resale, whereas imports are meant to be sold in their original place of origin. In effect, this has been bootlegged in legally to be sold illegally.

so not an import. but not a bootleg either. sold the same way as any other "used" CD in a record shop.

No, because it's not used. It's probably being touted in the store as the "new Prince CD from Europe", which makes it ......um....NEW, and marketed as such, illegally.

really? you think it's being touted? you think it's displayed at all? it's probably just sitting in the Prince bin with lots of used copies of the Vault and Diamonds & Pearls, like in every other record store in America.

Went to the store yesterday...has excellent selection, 20Ten, For You, 3121, Come, Emancipation, The Gold Experience...

GET 'EM ALL! Especially the Gold Experience. It's out of print (OOP) and is a good find. I recently found one for $1 at a garage sale, so I have 2 copies now, just cuz.

I always see new Emancipations for $4.99 in Record Town type stores.

GET 'EM ALL! Especially the Gold Experience. It's out of print (OOP) and is a good find. I recently found one for $1 at a garage sale, so I have 2 copies now, just cuz.
