Is the intro to If I Was Your Girlfriend a simple backstory Ok - perhaps this has always been known or obvious but it suddenly hit me, is the intro to the album version on IIWYGF a story of how we get to the song subject. Smooth talking guy (buying the lady a drink) ....Marriage.....relationship lost the spark. Just a thought

"Look at the bargins over here, ladies". How's that smooth talkin' someone into a drink?

Me three. Chances are it's just a short clip from a movie or TV show or something like that. |

Sorry - I wasn't saying what I heard was correct, I just thought that's what he said and that perhaps it was 'Prince' offering to buy the ladies a drink, married a few years later and now asking where the bond had gone.

 I just thought it made sense that's all, now inknow it's just a random bunch of samples....my versions better :-) Don't hate on my knackered ears ...I spent years think the line in Vicki Waiting was "is his character enough to PLEASE, AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE THE COFFEE MADE" And I have a friend (except hes not anymore) who will not accept that insatiable does not say "Let's take it slow babe AND HAVE SOME WINE"

here's what I found:
"BIG APPLE RAPPIN used a sample from a Sound Effects LP that was big at the time. It came from Hamburg in Germany and had many sound effects of occupations in the city. The most famous of which was a Taxi driver who is anonymous. Hamburg was famous at the time for huge parking problems outside Bingo Halls. Many Ladies would have to be let out in the street. I always believed it was this. The consensus seemed to be the line about bargains. Good find! You'll never know a girl called Nikki and you'll never find Erotic City

Crazy. I always thought it was something to do with parking when I first heard it back in 87, until I was "corrected" by a fellow Prince fan some years later...
I WAS RIGHT! It was about parking all along. Brilliant find!

Excellent find indeed! And yeah, now the meaning... or are we looking for something that isn't there, and he just wanted a soundsnip from life on the streets in a big city, in synch with the whole SOTT presentation, and this wast just a soundbite he stumbled upon? Wonder if previous configurations had this sample also.

If you'd said it before everyone else, I might have considered you original for once, but this time - not so much.

Here's what Spyder D (the guy who made "Big Apple Rappin'") says:
IMHO the guy on the record does say "bargains". To me it sounds like a market place where a vendor is calling out to people passing by "look at the bargains over here, ladies". Listen to "Big Apple Rappin'": in the fade-in you can hear him mention a price: http://www.boomkat.com/ju...type=music
The stuff about the German cab driver sounds like somebody is posting some nonsense, hoping to see his bullshit repeated. I don't see any evidence of his claims.

That doesn't ring true with me. Sounds like some arch surrealist pulling our collective plonkers. It's still 'bargains' to me. [Edited 8/25/10 12:39pm]

I always thought it was a preacher saying..."Look upon this southern hill ladies" because right afterwards was that wedding music. Hell, I always thought it was two lesbians getting married up on a southern hill. Andy is a four letter word.

That Spyder D track is awesomely bad. I had to find an mp3 download of it to add it to my collection of 80's songs. I have other Spyder D songs but didn't have that one. Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

I'm not convinced - if it was a taxi driver in Hamburg, I would have thought he would have being speaking in German - or at least have a German accent.
