Converting all Prince CD's / boots / download to external hardrive!

Hi everyone hope your all well..

Sooooooo ive decided to take on a bit of a project and finally digitally store my entire Prince collection. All official CD's, bootleg CD's and downloads etc.

Have just purchased a 650GB external harddrive (in purple cool ) and once this arrives ill begin the tedious task of transferring from CD to machine. Its gonna take ages but i see it as storing all my Prince material - past, present and future on my own little Purple Vault. I like the idea of that biggrin

Has anyone undertaken this task yet? Its gonna take forever, but i know when its done ill be very happy to have all my Prince stuff in one place forever more lol

here's an advice: get at least one more harddrive... and do backups!

The Compromise Theory:
Based on my analysis, I believe the government faked the plane crash and demolished the WTC North Tower with explosives.
The South Tower, in a simultaneous but unrelated plot was brought down by actual terrorists.
Is it a deal?

I need to do this as well for both P and MJ stuff I've collected over the years. I have a 250 but filled that bad boy up quickly. I was gonna wait for the Black Friday sales, but I dont think I can hold out that long...

I guess everyone is gonna need to do it one day!

Im doing this particular purple hard drive just for Prince stuff and gonna have a Prince symbol embossed onto the casing, kind of like my own little vault - i know once its done ill feel i have achieved something with my collection. But i will get another one at some point, i dont even know if im gonna fit everything on yet!

Cool little project tho' me thinks

I bought a 2TB & have begun the process of backing up my entire audio collection. Daunting task for sure...

BTW, Best Buy has the 2TB WesternDigital externals for about $150 at least once a month... wait for a sale!

God, I was just going to post this. Seriously, if yout think it's worth keeping something on a HD, it's worth backing up too.

Buy 2 of the same size (or same model even) and have one as a mirror of the other. (And keep them in different places). HDs are so cheap these days, it's really a worthy investment and may save you a lot time and heartwrenching later.

To answer the OP, I've got all my Prince CD/vinyl converted (and backed-up). A small piece of advice - rip the stuff to the highest bit-rate you are happy with - because in a year or two's time, you might find those 192kpbs rips are not high enough for your OCD tastes and you will find yourself ripping it all over again!

Of course lossless is best, but those files get big and you want to listen to them on the go/on your ipod etc, so not practical - personally I have everything @ 256kpbs aac - which is just perfect for me. (right now) lol

Yeah. Not only my Prince stuff, but all my CDs which took an INSANE amount of time. Would highly suggest you use Exact Audio Copy in secure for your ripping, I can't say enough great things about the program. It'll take some time, but if you have it set up correctly you won't have to worry about hearing any pops or shit when you go to listen to it 3 years later smile

Converted everything to mp3 using the LAME encoder

Only thing that sucked about it was realizing how many messed up boots I had sad Lots of silence gap issues

Glad I did it though. Although all my prince stuff is still sitting on the hard drive, I really need to back this up before I have a hard drive crash or some shit....

I have a 500GB hard drive and it's almost full. I definitely need to buy a 1TB.

newegg.com has external hard drives for reasonable prices and shipping isn't that much either.

I've been storing music digitally since before Napster existed (Audiogalaxy, baby!). I've gone from having over a thousand data cds, to 500gb external, then a 1tb, then two 1tb. A couple weeks ago I purchased the WesternDigital 4TB and I LOOOOOOVE IT! However, I did leave everything on the 1tb's as backups. I've lost an external before (dropped from about 6 feet in the air) and it sucks! lol

As far as Prince digitally goes, yeah, like a lot of us I have TONS of it. Like, MANY TONS! lol I'm really weak on the video side, though. Always have been. For some reason I don't need to see Prince and his bands. I can just "see" them in my head.

I've done it progressively with all my music in the past 3 years, now i'm done and in the process of sellin all the CD's.

As said b4, just make SURE that u make a backup copy on a second hard-drive b4 u get rid of the CD's. Hard-drives can break, dir, or be stolen, and then you've lost everything, so better have a backup copy ^^ I'd even suggest that u leave the backup copy at a friend's place just in case ur place is robbed or burns or whatever ^^

I haven't played a cd in about 3 years. Even 20Ten got downloaded forst and then the paper version was just ripped without actually playing in a cd player. HATE havibg all the hooha with crappy bits of plastic. I just want the music not the dust gatherer.

Looking for a new man. Freaks need not apply. Freeeks can tho ;-p

I can't believe so many of you are still keeping mp3.

I don't know what the hell y'all are talking about. Are y'all talking about scanning all your Prince CDs into your computer? If so, I've been done did that along with thousands of other songs by other artists too. I just plug the computer into the stereo, hit shuffle, and it's like having my own radio station.

I plan to. The only think about lossless is that I can't play those on the iPod so I end up having to convert them anyway, then I have two copies, one flac one mp3. Too much space. When I get the bigger hard drive I might do lossless, but for now mp3 will have to do.

You're doing it backwards . . . you should rip FLAC or Apple Lossless now, and then you won't ever have to rip the CD again. You can convert directly to MP3 or AAC from the Lossless files.

Also, ripping CDs is very taxing on your optical drive, so you really don't want to have to do them all twice . . .
