20TEN (2 additional songs that fit perfectly at beginning and end)

I added Cause and Effect as the first track, this song is a great opener in my opinion. I then added Hot Summer to the end of the album, a great closer. Throw it together, it flows very nicely and both tracks fit with the overall sound of the album.

peace

Forget "Cause and Effect". I hate that one, although i wonder if I could let it grow on me if I put it in the right place on the album. I don't necessarily agree with it being an opening track. The first track often sets the mood of the album (look at how Dream Factory and CB changed when SOTT became the lead track - giving the whole thing a darker feel). The whole album definitely doesn't have the same vibe or intention as "Cause and Effect".

I put "Hot Summer" before "Everybody Loves Me". It works perfectly. It's the only way I listen to the album, so for me it's just part of it. It breaks up the end of the album, and brings tempo back up a bit, and leads quite well into "Everybody Loves Me", another upbeat light-hearted song. "Laydown" is the closer for sure, no matter what. In reality, "Everybody Loves Me" is the closer, as "Laydown" is a bonus track. So "Hot Summer" before the 'end' of the album, not AS the end, works great.

Ernest: do try to fit Cause and Effect in there...I agree not as an opener, but if it were on vinyl, I might open side 2 with it. It took listening to Hot Summer in context of the album to enjoy it, so maybe the same can be said for C&E.

I stuck them on the end when I was listening to it, and honestly at the side of the album, these two tracks sounded marginally better than I originally thought, esp. C&E.

Of course they're nothing special, but not total doody either in context of the album.

Hmmmm, I put "Cause and Effect" between tracks 21 and 22, and "Hot Summer" between tracks 47 and 48.

My 20Ten still doesn't flow very good with those two additional songs, but I guess it flows a little better than before.

I wish Hot summer had been included on the album. I really like it. I love it when Prince does this kind of new wave catchy pop rock stuff.

It's in my itunes most played list just before the Cosmic Day snippet and for me they are cut from the same cloth. pure pop candy.

I've always thought Cause and Effect was an OK song but to me it's a b-side and I think it would sound out of place on this album as I think Laydown does.

I really think it sounds like it belongs to another album.

I like it but I wish 20ten ended on Everybody loves me

I might try Hot Summer before Everybody loves me.

I honestly would not be surpirsed if Cause & Effect and Hot Summer were both from the same sessions as the rest of the 20TEN tracks.

I've liked C&E since day one. I like when he does the more epic/ prog type stuff. Hot Summer Night is fun lite and breezy. Nothing more nothing less. I've been trying to figure out where to put them on 20Ten. I think C&E is a great ending for an album. So that will prolly go there. Not sure about HSN yet. Been getting ideas from everyone though.wink

don't know if this means anything or not, i'm sure it has been discussed before.......in "cause and effect", prince deliberately mentions the songs......laydown, compassion, and future soul song. sorry if this has been brought up before.

I have "Cause and Effect" and "Hot Summer" as my first and last songs on 20Tenalso. I love "Cause and Effect"!!! And with the way that "Cause and Effect" rocks, blends rock and funk, and name checks other songs on the album, it seems like the natural and perfect opener. And "Hot Summer" is a nice ending for the album, especially as a nice transition and cool down, ironically with its title, after "Laydown."

And Beginning Endlessly. Maybe others, but I can't quite make it out.

Not sure many are aware of that, that is why I had this as the intro song. It introduces the rest of the album well and the fact that it starts off with "I am here, where are you?" also makes for a good intro.
