Princes biggest mistake Was just thinking bout moments in his career where u think if only he did this that or the other he could have gone re created pass success.........
Not touring Sign O the Times in America
Not touring Diamonds and Pearls in America
Name Change
Writing slave on his face
Not promoting The Gold Experience
Untimate live Experience Tour
Not doing Musicology World Tour
Giving average albums away free (twice) with newspapers..............What a wasted opportunity????
Even not making Emancipation as a single.......seeing as this was his big comeback on the charts
Rave onto the joy fantastic album [Edited 9/5/10 21:23pm]

So he made a mistake if he doesn't tour overseas, and it's still a mistake when he does? Okay then.
Giving away free music isn't a bad move at all. He's not the first to do it, and not the last, and certainly puts most acts in the more rose-colored view of their fans. Hell, even Chuck D and Q-Tip were giving away music in 1998-1999 on the internet.
Prince's biggest mistake is always the same: Never following through.

did they do a pop soundtrack to Inception?
so far i've got Walk In Sand and a bunch of death metal heads.

I still think most non-die-hard folk were lost with the name change. It was just all too WTF-ish for most and became a joke.

at which point did you realise this was your favourite artist in the world ever?
i'll thank my big bro for the bootleg and the front row seats (near enough)

I think the name change was a BIG deal!! And Prince's lack of touring worldwide. He should have done tours both in the US and overseas for each ablum. Maybe slowing down a bit before releasing cds and really promoting the ones he has out.
Biggest Mistake to me was when he married Mayte!! He and his music changed and he just lost alot of fans and credibility. The focus on making good music was lost...Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

as was the sense of reality
(ominous rumble) | |

oh shit, i just remembered i had an awful ginger mullet when i locked eyes with Mayte.
i'll never live this down...

What?
Prince has been my favorite since Purple Rain (it was the first real listen i had at his music).
I don't get the question tho.

Inception rubbish - my older brother was playing The Love Symbol Album constantly when i were young, and i also remember bootlegging the batman soundtrack in 1989 when i were twelve (holding up one cassette player to another). At the time it seemed like every house required some form of hifi.
On the name change bit, all i'm saying is that is the exact point at which i became a fan.
It cuts like a knife, it tries to get in you,
that and Equinoxe by Jean-Michel Jarre. Anybody taken over a building yet? [Edited 9/5/10 22:05pm]

so the upshot of this is having ever released tunes on compact disc.

...OK
It might be the reason you became a fan (and I'm sure there's others), but that doesn't mean a whole lot of folk did not think it a joke.

imo Prince's biggest mistake is not to releaese re-mastered versions of his classic albums, each album with a bonus disc containing extended versions and b-sides. Prince 4Ever.

This may not be a direct answer to your question but... I feel that there are many ways to accomplish a purpose. If he had a purpose he wanted to achieve and he achieved it, then it wouldn't be a mistake.
Who knows, he may have achieved his purpose and it may not have been what a fan would like but he did what he wanted to do and probably had fun doing it.
As far as 'mistakes', I feel that 'mistakes' can be stepping stones or learning tools and can give us valuable experience.
But I don't know if he considers them mistakes or not, that would be an interesting question to ask him.

I know it's but...
WENDY AND LISA
The output went progressively downhill afterwards. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

For you, not for me. As far as I'm concerned, some of his best stuff has been in the last 10 years. TRC, Lotus and 20Ten are right up there. Never been a big W&L fan to be honest. RIP

Biggest mistake: easy :
dragging a BIG grotesque manny-tranny extremely ugly and vulgar drag-queen (so utterly talentless a nasty carreer at the Org is the only option) into the studio and pollute his genius and water down the beauty of his legacy.
sweet michael would be flipping over a thousand times in his grave knowing his great admiration has sunk this low P shoulda just given MJ the butt when he asked for it. LOL

I agree. I thought the name change was pretty cool, and I still think the symbol is the neatest logo in the world.
But the general public's perception of the name change was one of ridicule, and Prince is still living with that stigma today.

Changing his name to an unpronounceable love sign is the cutest and most clever thing he EVER did. Trust me !

Well, all that....and the original poster did not even mention Prince's biggest mistake....I can say it in 5 letters....

Not really sure what gerrard was really thinking for 70% of this, but suppose he meant that Prince should have toured both Europe and the USA. It would have made a minor difference for SOTT, and Parade. Lovesexy did not sell well in the USA, so not sure that this argument holds too much water. In the end, Prince was full of mistakes.
The only thing that makes this sad to me, is that he could have had the commercial and critical success of U2, and the reputation of the Beatles, but instead, released too many albums, and let Tony M in the band. I always felt that with proper Management, he could've been the star MJ was with more critical respect....but oh well...Jughead.

Live CD's and Dvd/Blu rays! He the man in the studio, but live he is God like. But he never wants to put out live stuff. I don't care if its overdubbed like Sign o the Times. But lets get this stuff out. An offical release of the 86 in Stockholm? The 83 concert where he introduced Wendy and did the PR material?? Roadhouse Garden concert where he turned 26 I think? Damn, come one P! 1980-Present
First album bought: Controversy

Depending on what tour, he can be god like. From 1980-1989, he was the best without question. He was sometimes great from 1990-1996...From 1997-2001....well... On The Medley(Jam) of the Year tour, he was a washed up Vegas act at 38. Just a few years later on ONA, he was great again. Close to great on Musicology, but has been stuck in a rut since then. At his best, he is the best, but U2 has schooled him in Live performances on their last 2 tours, cookie cutter tours like U2 should not be better than Prince, but right now, they are.

TOTALLY agree!!! It was never going to last either way, they quit before he fired them, agreed to do the Parade tour and then he fired them anyway. I do wish a lot of the songs they did together could have been released before they parted ways. The music the 3 of them made together will always be some of my favorite music by anyone. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

Joining the Jehovah's Witnesses was a big personal mistake and it doesn't help his public image either. Makes him look more weird - and not in a good or fun way.

I think you are right-his boredom threshold is too low. However I suppose this is the trade off for the volume and diversity we get. Take one part of a person away and you don't know what you get after. However if it were possible I think you are bang on here
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
As a Prince fan I would want all the tours but I think people on here overestimate the impact of a brilliant live act on commercial success-most peole don't care
