No I see what you're saying. I didn't like that part, with the dancers and all. That was a weird era.

You do realize "those dancers" were the dudes on the catwalk dancing to The Time in Purple Rain, right?

I know that myself. Prince had them all wearing Star Trek: The Next Generation outfits. Tony M, Damon D, Kirky J, etc...should have been auditioning for a bad Sci Fi show instead of being anywhere near the best musician of my lifetime. It would be like Michael Jordan asking me to join the Bulls in 1996. I could shoot, but there were about 189 million better basketball players in the world to choose from. Maybe 500 million. And I never would've been asked. It's like Michael Keaton playing Batman. They could've got Richard Simmons or Elton John to be Batman, and it woulda made about as much sense. Nothing against small framed guys....but did Pee Wee Herman get to play Superman...nope. What this has to do with the post I'm replying to at this point, I don't know, but I sure hated the Corny, useless dance routines, and my life would have probably been more complete if Tony M had just stayed a nobody. Gee, it sure is funny that nobody ever signed him to a rich deal after he left the NPG>

Yes, but at least in the movie they were in the background, in like one scene, never to appear in the movie after that. Where they belonged. IN THE BACK. WAAAAYY in the back. Not rapping on a song. Tony M indeed. confused

When are y'all gon' learn that NOTHING CAN STOP PRINCE AND THE NEW POWER GENERATION!!!

WELCOME TO THE DAWN U TRICKS!!!

Okay, seriously, the whole New Power Soul/New Power Generation was and is cool to me. It was different in that it espoused ideas/ideals other than the materialism bull that was/is all the rage of pop culture/pop music. And, yes, Prince was trying to be different, trying to start his own trend, and trying to co-opt or integrate some of what was happening at the time with his own style or way of doing things. But, that is Prince, and, in many ways, that is being creative. No human being has ever created "something" from "nothing." We all take parts of something and mix it to our own liking. So, when we say Prince "was" an original, he "is" an original in that like most greats he took things of the past, mixed them in his own way, and created Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, Parade, Sign Of the Times, and Lovesexy. And each of these albums had the theme of a new, multicultural generation making its own rules. "Reproduction of the New Breed, leaders stand up and organized." The New Power Generation is just a new take on the Revolution, which is just a new take on the New Breed. If one is corny (inauthentic), then they all are corny (inauthentic).

Of course, the good thing that I'm hearing with all of these posts is that we (as fans) don't have to like everything that Prince does to be considered fans, and that Prince is talented enough that most fans will overlook or ignore what they don't like to enjoy what they do like without making a big fuss about what they don't like, leaving that aspect to other fans who might like what they don't like. That's New Power in action, damit! Now, sweep yo' hair back on one side and bring y'all's butts into this park so that we can play in the sunshine whether y'all want to or not, damit!

agreed; all prince's releases are connected to each other in multiple levels/ways

as for the "corny" bit; remember when other's call you that, it's coz they have a hard

time understanding why you are so cool being yourself,

and look back at their own insecurity;

Prince is one of those people...basically his whole life, he has had to battle to just

assert who he is (which is actually his success...being himself)

Ok, some folks don't like the NPG, some folks like them, so what? I like NPG just as much as I liked the Revolution and that's genuine that's not sarcastic. lol

No, no, no. that's the either or fallacy promoted by the big headed man behind the platinum curtain. There's another box with more colorful pills in it. I saw it once in a dream...or was that in my grandmother's medicine cabinet? Anyway, there are more choices...Free yo' mind, and yo' electric bill will follow...Release It!!!

I hate the term "jumped the shark," but for lack of a better term, as I listened to the end of the Gold Experience CD in 1995, Prince totally jumped...hell jumped 480 sharks, as Gold comes to an end...WELCOME 2 THE DAWN, YOU ARE NOW AN OFFICIAL MEMBER OF THE NEW POWER GENERATION...YOUR NPG LUNCHBOX, NPG STICKERS, AND MEMBERSHIP CARD WILL BE IN THE MAIL SOON...ugg...that was so so so so lame. (Yes, I made up some of that...but he may as well have had the lousy annoying NPG operator say that)

Maybe not as bad artisticly as having Tony M in the band in the early 90's, but Prince put that in there probably in a serious frame of mind. I felt like I was being talked to like a 10 year old watching the power rangers or something...damb that was lame. I love the CD, though it was over-produced, and what that man did to Endorphinmachine....lowering the guitar in the mix, and turning up the keyboards....and as much as I hate interludes, Prince made me despise them, as he had some of them like in Billy Jack Bitch interrupt the music...like when the horn breakdown tried to kick ass at the end...but no, instead of enjoying the music, this dumb annoying woman voice kicks in:"Please access another experience.." yuck...still a damb nice cd, mistakes and missteps nonwithstanding.
