Classic. Average didn't happen until about 1991.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I think I Would Die 4 U is average and the only song on Purple Rain that is not above average. Baby I'm A Star is great.

I think "classic" is relative to the listener. For me, what makes a song "classic" is when it makes you feel the extact same way you felt the first time you heard it years before.

For me, these both are classic. I do still get the same level of intrigue and interest when I hear them now that I did then. That's not to say I want to hear them all the time. I actually steer clear of older material because I've heard it millions of times. I don't need to hear it again and again in 2010. But if it comes on in iTunes, so be it. It's classic and I'll listen.

I think she meant Diamonds & Pearls in general. Horribly so-so without Gett Off.

Classic definitely. I always listen to these two together, the way they are on the CD. Probably my two most listened to P songs, other than the long (but not hallway) version of Computer Blue.

Back in the day listening to Purple Rain the album on record... I always wasn't to into Take Me With U or Baby I'm a Star... they just seemed like quickly done boring tracks. Now of course I associate a lot of extraneous memories with them and performances of Baby I'm a Star were outstanding... but on the album back then... I thought they weren't that great.

I think I understand what DigitalElectric is saying.

Its a subtle context, but yes, Ill say, comparatively with not only the other songs on Purple Rain, but against most of his other tunes from the classic period, those songs are average.

Though I would probably say Baby Im a Star is more so. Pumping with energy, and great performance...but still the song itself, is average.

I Would Die 4 U on the other hand has that very distinctive drum pattern and woosh sound.

So actually on second thought, ....perhaps Baby Im a Star is the only real "average" song of the two.

There are no average tracks on Graffiti Bridge except for Shake.

And let's not forget tracks like Slow Love, The Ladder, Free - all average.

But anyway, I would Die 4 U and Baby I'm Star are most definitely top notch

I get you.. .I mean the lyrics to Baby I'm A Star are a bit... strange. "Baby but I are..." Its like he just needed something to rhyme with star? bar? car? Far? And the way it's produced, the "star" after that part is pretty hidden in the track, but since we've all seen him punctuate it on stage and in the movie and what not, we know it's there.

But it's the energy of the song that gets u. So I still say classic. smile

Definitely classic. I was just listening to I Would Die 4 U and thinking about how interesting it is. It does not have much of a melody but somehow it is very exciting and the lyrics are great. It sounds dated yet still fresh when it comes on the radio for some reason.

Live on the PR tour this song was great as well with Wendy's rhythm guitar, Lisa's power chords and Sheila's conga and timbale solos.

Two classics from a classic album..He should play them in unison again..

Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

They are both classic, but I Would Die 4 U is the brilliant one among them. Baby I'm A Star is a very good track, but it's nowhere near as innovative, creative, breathtaking, unique and on-point as I Would Die 4 U.

smile Who doesn't?? smile

They are classics. And the live versions that actually got played on TV back in the day were classics in their own right. Nobody was doing live jams like back then,, the extended parts, the cues, timbale solos by Sheila, etc. smile

Just thinking about those times ..... you can't explain it.

These tracks are 100% classics, music

I wonder why you are asking that silly question... question

Everything from the albums 1980 to 1988 is classic.

(Maybe apart from Ronnie Talk To Russia.)
