I recently fell in love with Prince's live version of "All This Love." (Sadly, I actually had to google the song to see whose it was--I figured he was covering someone else's song. Imagine my surprise.) So I went back to the original version to take another listen...and yep, it's bad. What Prince does with it live is awesome; what he did with it on Bria's CD is lame and drab.

Part of the beauty of aesthetic relativity to some extent in the human species is that whats unenjoyable to one can be very enjoyable to another. I had the exact opposite experience with "All This Love". I thought his live rendition of this song was rather bland and uneventful but I liked (not loved or anything) Bria's version... i but I guess its a nice song to perform live if the band is worth showing off...

Another vanity project that isn't remotely unique, vibrant, or colorful. The same dull, thin-voiced crap he churned out for Mayte's and Tamar's albums. These women aren't singers (no, I don't particularly care for Tamar's voice), they are models. Which is fine. But let's not dress them up as "real musicians" when they basically just fuck for tracks.

Nah... Tamar is a singer. The girl can sing. Not just averagely, she sounds good. And I say that not particularly caring for her album with Prince all that much. Whether you or another likes her particular kind of voice or not is another story.

Do you find it interesting that a Prince fan calls his music trash, or that a Prince fan has a mind of their own and calls trash as such when they hear it?

There is two ways about it. It's trash. Masterpiece? Yeah ok, go listen to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On?, and listen to not only what he's saying, but what is happening in the course of the 35 minute record. Find out how that record changed the world, and how quickly people still think 99 cents for the Lotusfuck3r set is still too expensive for a lot of FANS here. I'm a musician, so yeah, I approach most every CD from a "musical point of view" (as if there's another way, even as a non-musician to listen to it?). It's garbage, forgettable, and another banal vanity project, as Spinlight stated.

It's better then Sade's album

I agree with that, Sade's last album kinda sucked for me. I've listened to Elixer probably 50 times more than I listened to Soldier of Love. Musically its just a much stronger album IMO.

No side artist's album, especially a female "artist" who can't sing and is his "girlfriend" of the month, should ever be packaged with a "Prince" album. What can Bria offer as an artist? Nothing. It's like if Prince packaged his Symbol LP with Carmen Electra's album. Disgusting, actually.

THIS. The protege thing is the ONE thing I can't stand about Prince. It's great that you're having sex with them and trotting them out for appearances and dressing them up in clothes you bought for them and marrying them or wifing them up or whatever you wanna do, but please please PLEASE stop producing them and trying to put them out as ligitimate artists. I wonder if he knows that the public sees these "protege" projects as a joke, especially since pretty much every single one of them hasn't shown real REAL talent in the singing department. (Sheena excluded, but he didn't sleep with her, IIRC.. and maybe Tamar, but we'll never know because her album is sitting on a shelf somewhere collecting dust. I'm sure there are bootleg copies floating around, but I don't know that I care that much to go searching for it.)

That being said I haven't listened to Brenda's CD because I just can't stomach the protege thing, it really is the ONE thing that I CANNOT stand about Prince. I'm gonna reserve judgement until I hear it, but his track record is so bad anyway with this protege BS that I'm not expecting much.

I have no doubt that production wise it's quite tight, I mean this is Prince after all. Just give me instrumental versions of the songs or something cause I just can't stand to hear another weak female vocalist come out of Prince's bedroom.

ELIXER is for the most part, a representation of two toxic forces coming together, under the guise of love, and projecting a vain synthetic insincere and highly desperate work of utter fiction

I liked most of the album, "Kept Woman" being my favorite biggrin

Also on the Tamar album, which is the same sort of thing apart from Redhed Stepchild which is just awesome!

i agree with the thread statement. overall, i understand why people say the album is "forgettable" but i do think the production is pretty good. All this Love and Here I Come are B+ songs IMO, a couple others are decent but because Bria's voice is just average it falls flat as an overall project. No comparison to TRC, a conceptual masterpiece!

I think the CD is good. I just don't think Bria has the vocal skills to carry the music. As some of us heard Prince cover some songs and his versions are great.

So there are people actually unresponsive to the cool title track? Brainwashed by hype (hype can be negative hype of anti-new-prince-bots)! It's like some people can't seperate what they hear from a context that just shouldn't really matter. The title track is great. As in, if it had been a bootleg song, I would have sought to collect a pristine copy. But that's it. The rest is not so memorable.

Gotta step in with the agreement that, at the very least, the title track is a very cool song. I like it a lot, actually. In fact, if the singer had some more power behind her voice, I think the whole album could have been rather good. (and why all the dislike for 2nite? its one of the songs on the album that has a pulse...)

Oh well. If I'm in for some mellow background music, I'll put on Elixer.

=0P

PS. I understand people not liking this CD...it's not high art. But to start going on rampages about the Devil (a la macadamia) I truly do not understand...
