Number23

A song only Prince, alone, could create. Absolutely astonishing art. As otherworldly and incomparible now as it was then.

This was a song that really sealed the deal for me of Prince's ability to create drama (narrative drama) in a song. I had this on vinyl in 1988 on "Chocolate box" (along with Moviestar, Data Bank, Girl of my Dreams/Can't Stop This Feeling I Got/We Can Funk)...

and I remember deciphering the lyrics by listening to the record in parts over and over and writing down what I thought they said (the audio quality of that boot wasn't the best). And as it came into shape, and I understood the storyline, and the reveal of the "two words"... it was great.

You just took me back about 20 years. Oh do I miss those days. The awesome quality boots we get now are heaven sent, but there was something about the dirty, hissy versions that was special...like we had a BIG secret. Ahhh...

As for Joy In Repetition...FANTASTIC. thumbs up!

Loved it as a boot. For some reason didnt work for me on GB.

I agree most of the 'unreleased' stuff that got released on GB or after just didn't work as an official release. Tick Tick Bang example

The Lovesexy followup (not Graffiti Bridge) would have been nice

OH YES!! That Chocolate Box record was my monumental first Prince bootleg find in

March 1989! and JIR, the last cut on side 1 was the whispery mysterious conerstone

of the whole collection. I can remember playing a cassette copy of that already cruddy

quality record for people in my car and having them totally in to how damn good the song was.

Well we were all stoned too of course

One of his finest pieces. So many ideas worked beautifully into one song.

Bluu

I luvz me some Joy In Repetition. There's a bootleg version with no bar sounds at the beginning like you hear on Grafitti Bridge version and it opens on just the drums--powerfully haunting sound. Then the dissonant synth line comes in further defining the brooding atmosphere of the song. Otherwise it's the same song but that small 10-15 second difference in how the song opens really makes a difference in setting the tone.

Yep, bootlegs used to be COOL! The records... I also remember listening to my freshly obtained record of Charade right at the end of 1988 on a cold winter day and then switching the record to 45 rpm after hearing his message on All My Dreams. "Play my record double speed, feel the climax fit for a king"
