FBG Minnesota Music Awards 1986

Lots of you probably have this already but this boot is new to me.

This is a great (but short) 40 min set, performed live at the Minnesota Music Awards show, where Prince picked up awards for best video (Raspberry Beret), best film score (Parade) and best cover artwork (Around The World In A Day).

The live set is nice and lively, and is said to have some audio improvements over the original boot. Though this is not confirmed. The sound is (i think) an audience recording and is nice and clear throughout.

Anyone have this, what do you think?

Well this is a surprise. A soundboard recording from 1986 and presented to us here for the very first time. This show will be familiar to many having been out as an audience recording on many different bootlegs for some time now (recommended listening would be FBG’sMinnesota Music Awards’) and it’s remained a popular performance with collectors and fans alike due to the energetic and fun vibe it has throughout.

Unfortunately, despite it being a soundboard, the recording does suffer a few problems and from what I’ve been told it appears to have been somewhat a labour of love (or hate depending on your viewpoint!) to get to the quality presented here. One of the main problems the recording suffers from is a great deal of feedback or ‘hum’ throughout most of the show but it’s certainly more prominent during the opening 10 minutes. My notes point out that most of problems occurred on the left channel which led to some major work to remove it, forcing the team to create some ‘pseudo stereo’ effects. That said, for the sake of retaining a good overall sound not all the hum was fully removed. Fade outs and drop outs were also an issue and for the most part all seem to have been fixed very nicely plus ‘Kiss’ was also incomplete so this has been filled in using parts from the audience recording. However, despite all this it’s of a perfectly listenable quality and the general, overall sound is superb in comparison to the audience recording and I’m kinda reluctant to linger on the bad parts too much because, in the grand scheme of things, it’s simply not needed.

So not the perfect soundboard recording we all wanted nor expected and, as I said, I don’t feel the need for any unnecessary criticism. Let’s remind ourselves this has been made available for the first time in 24 years and should be celebrated accordingly and I always admire the work and dedication the free labels will put in to bring the fans the best quality recordings they can. The fact that so many years down the line we can still be surprised by something new from one of Prince’s greatest musical eras is some to embrace and treasure. So props once more to Akashic Records for making that possible.

There isn't a second cd. This is fantastic to have in great soundboard after all these years.

A note from Akashic Records:

"This recording came with many flaws and dropouts. (and some heavy humming from the gear)

What was done to it:
Pitch speeded up from start to finish.(it was playing way too slow)
Pitch speeded up again from 1:45 to 4:30, where the recording was slowing down heavily again.
Noise cleaned.
Normalised.
Panning corrected.(hell of a job!!, it went all over the place)
Various eq-processes to boost the quality to the max.
Left channel dropout from 4:50 till 5:15 fixed with audio from right channel, very noticeable.
Clipped peak restoration. Smoothed out some low end with heavy distortion, it's still there but less intruding.
Didn't touch hum, could have been removed but would kill the overall quality, it remains till 11:40 into the gig. Both options were discussed and we choose not to remove it.
While tracking, editted Kiss, which was incomplete. (added the extended part of the audience recording)
Also noticed you can hear the other side of the tape playing in the left channel..... Most noticeable at the end of Kiss, where Prince is talking to the audience. For that part, I replaced the left with the right channel.

Right..... after all this was done, I started thinking about another option, because I still wasn't satisfied with the outcome.
What if I totally remove the left channel, which has the most problems?
And so I did, and started working from the already tweaked right channel. I added minor pseudo stereosound and gave it some more eq'ing.
Is it perfect now?? No, not by a long shot. The recording had too many shortcomings.
Is it enjoyable now? Hell yes!! It's a 86 soundboard!! How can you not love it!!"
