Crystal Ball CD Booklet Does anyone have a scan of this? Did the "round" casing version ever come with a booklet or just the online liner notes? I only ever remember getting the discs themselves and never knew if a booklet ever did exist on any version
Thanks all "I have a date with Lisa. Isn't that wonderful?"

Apparently the 4 CD version came with a Circular 18 Page Deluxe Cd Booklet. (Just seen at amazon)
My 5 CD version came without any printed booklet. I guess we all received that.

IIRC, only the retail versions came with the booklet?

Both regular jewel box and round box had the booklet. Whether it was just the retail versions i do not know. And as for it being a "deluxe" booklet, well, that is a matter of opinion. Sorry, i do not have scans.

i ordered it from 1 800 new funk...think i did on the phone....this was when the internet was just getting going...it was posted to me....in the clear round plastic cover ...5 discs....didnt come with booklet...not to me anyway...

Looks to be that only the reatail versions came with the booklet bob. The booklet had the tracklist of each cd, and underneath every song title a little sentence or two about the origin of the track. Nothing special really, no pictures of any kind, but a nice wee addition. I wonder why the internet release never had the booklet?

there was a website with artwork to each song and a short history on each song on cb....you can still get the artwork on the internet if you look....

Yeah, if it is the site i am thinking of it also had the song lyrics too. The site seems to be down now.

Correct. Though it's true that the 1-800-New Funk mail order 5-CD sets did not get the booklet.
Online booklet: http://www.crystalballcd....rames.html
Noiseland Industries story behind the packaging: http://www.noiseland.com/gallery/
Steve Parke on the packaging and subsequent 1-800-NEW FUNK fiasco:
Crystal Ball Legacy - Published on: 5/26/1999 Last Visited: 5/11/2002
According to Steve Parke, the art director for "Crystal Ball," in an interview given to Replication News, the Artist wanted something different that would not only "catch the eye," but would "circumvent the bootleggers by putting out a package they can't replicate."Apparently the original plan was to come up with a package that would live up to the "Crystal Ball" name, but there was some concerns over breakage and the notion of packing and shipping a fragile piece. And then once it was decided that the package would be available in stores, Parke adds, "A lot of the time, retailers won't deal with it if they can't put it on their shelves."Therefore, if you'll pardon the pun, the "real" alternative packaging got shelved. What we ended up with instead is a 3-piece clear plastic contraption--shaped like a large pill--where the middle "half-moon" piece holds the 5 discs, and the two clear outer plastic dishes encapsulate the funk.In a wee bit ofirony, the discs themselves, much like the actual music contained within, don't fit the mould. In fact, you'll need the hands of a surgeon to get your 5-discs to fit in their proper slots without scratching them all to hell. And, make no mistake, no matter how hard you squint, the packaging doesn't look even remotely like a crystal ball.
...
Parke explains, "We later changed our minds when we realised that not everyone had access to the Internet."Apparently then, this decision must have been made after the first batch of "Crystal Ball" albums were already manufactured and sealed, because fans who ordered via phone did not get the booklet, but those who purchased their copies in stores did. Why they couldn't have just printed up extra booklets and thrown in a copy with the FedEx package, I certainly can't understand. However, maybe it was for the best, as adding yet another element of possible confusion onto NewFunks' already shaky cardboard table, would no doubt have created even more confusion, and may have just collapsed the damn thing altogether!I can just imagine the look on the poor person's face who does not have access to the Internet or one of the Fanzines trying to figure out what music is on these 5 discs, when only the tracks contained on the fourth disc are labelled.Talk about your adventures!Somebody needs to send these folks at least a hand-scribbled note containing the track list, or else they might just have to make up names to all these songs for themselves; much like has already been done for years by bootleggers.

Interesting fact: Before the tracklist for Crystal Ball was released and the website booklet finished, the devs put some random favorite outtake titles in the crystal ball graphic that linked to small passages about the songs. "Our Love" and "Roadhouse Garden" were both listed on the ball with a message from the devs stating that though they did not know if those 2 songs would be on the album, they were 2 of their favorites and hoped they would make it.

Wow, I remember than issue of Record Collector - that magazine was a little lifeline pre-internet.

Oh SHITE!!
On page 136 of the article it says that Version #3, The U.S. Mail Order Version, comes with a T-Shirt?!? I never got a T-Shirt!!
I do not remember this. But, after the LotusFlow3r.com fiasco, it's very interesting... Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

The Crystal Ball fiasco was worse than the LotusFlower fiasco.
The T shirt I got was lame as fuck. It said " " on the front and " s me" on the back, white shirt with black print. [Edited 9/3/10 8:14am]

I think they sent out the shirts to quell all the angry fans, who were really mad by the time the CDs got into their hands. Everyone got different shirts.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It was certainly worse for me because I didn't join LotusFlow3r but I did go through the CB experience. I just never knew of the shirt...
I guess "The War" cassette I got was supposed to make up for all the problems... too bad it wasn't a CD, that might have shut me up. Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

MY question is, who got The Truth and who got Kamasutra? Who got both and a War cassette? I sure as hell didn't, but I got the liner notes.

My t-shirt said "I love funky music" on the front. And the back said, I love safe sex" Its one of my house shirts. I forgot how I got that shirt. haha. 1980-Present

You wouldn't order online. The 5CD version included both The Truth and Kamasutra. And the T-Shirt. And a few months later, the War cassette. I got it all in my faraway land.
Well, everything but the booklet

That's the one I got too | |

I got the 5 CDs (including The Truth & Kamasutra) in the hockey puck case with no liner notes. Later I recieved The War on cassette. Then I got another The War on cassette. No shirt. Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

So when did The War on cd crop up?

That is interesting, I didn't know that tidbit.
You can actually still listen to and download WAV files of Crystal Ball snippets from the cached L4OA site: http://web.archive.org/we...groove.htm If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

It was originally part of a share/donation tree where CD-Rs were distributed to those that asked. The mail order arm of 1-800-New Funk and the website offered pressed copies for sale($10?) sometime after that, but sold out pretty quickly. I'm not sure of a specific date where silvers were offered to the public, but I got mine post-haste as I expected there to be strong demand. I also received two cassettes(at different times) and a tiny t-shirt with my Crystal Ball order.

Yes, the copies i have seen of The war on cd are not the cd-r, they are proper pressed up cd's with a card sleeve with the artwork. It is one of very few Prince cd's that i have not managed to buy yet, it is very rare to find one on cd now, but mainly because prices are so high. I will have to bite the bullet and buy one some day before prices become too silly.

That's awesome! I remember playing those so many times, over and over. I had never heard "Dream Factory" or "Calhoun Square" or (obviously) "Make Yo Mama Happy" at that point and was REALLY impressed with "Days of Wild" because I think his live versions have always eclipsed the studio track (which I've always found as being rather bland and repetitive).
I'm really getting nostalgic looking at the L41A site. Back when I respected Prince still and he was still weird enough to be charming. Now he's just fucking annoying.
