Hi, no big deal, still.. can anyone tell the reason behind this- very annoying with all that SILENCE on those CD's:

Newpower Soul: 11.– 48. silent tracks

Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic: track 4. silent track

The Rainbow Cildren: 15.-20. silent tracks

20Ten: 10.–76. silent tracks

Aren't you annoyed with this, too...

at one point I thought by myself....

"This could be Prince's way of saying: "I can easily fill in those silent tracks with more songs, but I just won't"":...... like Prince is "teasing" us....

could this be the reason??

or - are those silent tracks made just to annoy us??

What frequencies can you hear?

Apparently the 4 second silence on Rave Un2 was in memory of Miles Davis. But the others, I no know.

It was, If memory serves, it is mentioned somewhere on the cd packaging that the track is dedicated to Miles Davis, a moment of silence to pay respect.

it's ridiculous, especially if a casual fan gets the free cd and never hears track 77 !!!

Hmm... now that I think about it... I did have a copy and I can slightly remember seeing something saying "Tribute 2 Miles" on the liner notes...

Prince isn't the only artist to do this. It's called a "hidden track". Most times the song isn't on the packaging or anywhere to be seen. It's just kind of a bonus to those who spend their hard earned money on the CD. No big deal here.

It gives you time to go and make yerself a cup of tea.

For whatever reason, artists and bands like to have this "silence" now, as if to highlight the forthcoming song as somehow different from the rest of the album.

At least by using multiple silent tracks, rather than a 2 or 3 minute gap in the last track, Prince has allowed those who rip the CD to their PC or MP3 player to eliminate the silence if they want to.

Rainbow Children: from 14 (end) to 20 (real end) = 7 tracks

i guess its to make a track seem like a hidden or bonus track. but with cd's you can see how many tracks there are and how long they are without even listening to it so its not really hidden anymore. plus these tracks seem to be listed as bonus or hidden so how hidden is it really? i remember when this would be done on cassettes though. a big gap, no mention of it anywhere. so some people really would never know there was something at the end of the tape unless they forgot to hit stop!

i just remembered, danzig did it once on one of his cds, danzig 4 i think. it had 66 tracks with a bunch of silent ones. but on most cd players at the time if the display was right with tracks numbers and then a total time next to it (which a lot of players displayed) it would show the numbers 666. 66 tracks at 60 mins even i think it was. i thought it was kind of amusing. doesn't work now with everybody playing stuff on computer now though.

Not really. You pick and choose the things you'll be irritated by in life. Not the first time any artist has done this, and it won't be the last. You could choose to be bothered by the 20 seconds of crowd nonsense in "Pop Life", or that Tora Tora voice on The Rainbow Children, or all the backwards shit he puts on his records since way early on (well before Purple Rain).

Or you can just go with it.

It's because "hidden tracks" usually don't fit the mood, genre, flow or the tempo of the "proper" CD.

Doing this was big deal in the 90's...used to it..not irritated.

I remamber when they used to hide songs inside of the space between songs on a cd...for example Wild Orchid's "Oxygen" has a hidden musical interlude inbetween the space from track 6-7 I believe while the negative space is going into the next song...however when trying to find it on the computer it cannot be read as a seperate song unfortunatley.

I miss the 90's in that way....

But, yes: few things irritate me more than some silent cuts on cds to separate a song which is a bonus/hidden track on an album and the composer doesn't want us to relate it to the album content.

Yes, because pirates always forget to rip them.

Nobody told Prince somebody else has done this. He thinks this is some groundbreaking unique idea that he came up with. If somebody told him billions of artists like They Might Be Giants have done this, maybe he would quit wasting time with it. I remember my 1992 TMBG cd with 50 or so tracks on it.

I still think Prince is the best out there, but he has followed more trends than he has set in the last 15 or so years. I still dare you to find a recent better written guitar album than Lotus Flow3r. He may have royally screwed his fans with the website, but the rewards within that one cd almost makes me forget about the $77 T Shirt that would not fit.

That's interesting that you point that out about They Might Be Giants. Apparently one of their albums was the first to be released online.

The coolest hidden tracks to me have been the ones that are actually BEFORE the first track. I only know of 2 cds to do this (if you know of others, please list!). The X-Files soundtrack (tv show - not movie soundtrack) has a Nick Cave a the Dirty Three song before track 1 (liner notes state something to the effect that "remember 0 is also a number) and the Twisted Willie (Willie Nelson tribute) cd has a cool interview with Willie and Waylon. The only way to access them is to hold down the old reverse button on a cd player after you've started track 1. Any computer I've ever put them into doesn't seem to like the discs at all.
