Wow - I absolutely love this thread! I love reading about everyones past experiences w/ P, there's so many different experiences.
Well, basically it started about 3 years ago for me. I was past the point of obsessed w/ Michael Jackson, and yeah of course I had heard about Prince but never paid much attention to him or his music .. he's never really been big over here in New Zealand, or within my age group That's untill my Mum's friend who knew I was into Mike let me borrow her copy of Purple Rain and The Gold Experience. Now I've always had a soft spot for slow love songs but wow, once I heard 'I Hate U' and 'The Beautiful Ones' I was hooked - and have never gone back either. I still remember the first time I heard "The Beautiful Ones' - I literally cried my eyes out.
These days I don't even listen to Mike, and Prince has taken over my heart if that's what you call it Taking in over 30 years of music has been quite an experience I must say! P keeps me interested, there's always something new/exciting as his catologue is so different.

I was ten and my father took me to see Prince open for Rick James. That was mind blowing, nothing like going to church, which, up to that moment, was the major range of my live music experience, except for passing juke joints and cafes walking home from choir practice. A couple weeks after the Prince/Rick James concert, I realized that a group of guys in the neighborhood who were a local rock bad--an African American rock band in 1980 I might add--were listening to Dirty Mind under the tree where most of them lived. I made it my business to find a reason to pass that tree everyday until one of them said, "Hey, li'l man, you wanna hang out and listen to this music?" I said yes, and the rest is my life being in love with Prince music. And like eveyone else has said, I spent my high school and college years purchasing 45s, 12 inches, remixes, and later bootleg VHS and later DVDs and CDs. However, I was 18 before I saw another concert, and now I've seen him 32 times, counting concerts, aftershows, and shows at Paisley Park. (It would have been 33, but my mother ripped the tickets I had to see the Purple Rain Tour in Memphis because I had two Ds and an F on my report card.)

Thanks for that... I went back and read my response from then. Same story, different details. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

"when doves cry" is the last brillant single to my ears and eyes from anyone... I played it 5000 times the first week it came out... it still sounds new and fresh to this day... a man at the peak of his powers.. "17 days" ... what a great bside.. possibly his best.... i became a fan from that moment on BOB4theFUNK

And back on topic, 'how did u become a Prince fan?' Wow, my answer would be so long if I elaborated, lol. So I'll try and sum it up super quick and the rest will be inthe book Basically, I heard him on the radio when I was about 10 years old and loved what I heard. And my older brother used to always buy albums that us younger ones would listen to as well. He got a Prince album once and that was it! Been hooked since way back then... Those are just two of the ways that led me to being a 'fan' - but there's so much more. I could go on forever...
