RadioGhost

It was in '79 when I first heard of Prince. I was around 10 years old. "I wanna Be Your Lover" and "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" were played a lot on the radio back in those days.

Shortly thereafter, me and my mom saw him for the first time on a TV show one night. I can recall how shocked we both were at his appearence. Other than that, I didn't think much of him.

Shortly after that, I began to listen to a very popular DJ we had here in Detroit who called himself The Electrifying Mojo. I have him to thank for starting me of as a Prince fan. While he often played a huge variety of music, he also played a large selection of Prince's music as well. So, when "Dirty Mind" and then "Controversy" came out, I became gradually hooked.

But it wasn't until 1999 came out that I became a fan I guess. The first song I bought from Prince was "Let's Pretend We're Married" LP. I really wanted to buy the 1999 album but at just 12 years old I had trouble raising the money.

Meanwhile, Mojo continued to play plenty enough music from Prince and The Time until I could buy more music. He even went as far as playing the entire Purple Rain album the night before it was officially released (He also did this with "Around The World In A Day" and "Parade" as well). I also heard a rare version of "Computer Blue" that night that I wouldn't hear again in full for another 20 years.

Eventually it got to the point where even Prince himself noticed how much support he was getting here in Detroit because of Mojo. He called in to the station one night to give a rare telephone interview that I really enjoyed listening to when he was here back in '86. I think I still have it on tape to this day.

Anyway, it seemed like with for a time, with every successive album I became more of a Prince fan. But, starting in the early 90s, Prince's style of music was changing far too much for me.

I generally consider everything from "Grafitti Bridge" on to be too inferior compaired to the earlier music that I grew up with. These days, I only keep up with him every now and then. I don't listen to much of his newer stuff.

How did I become a Prince fan...hmmm...by being one decades before being an org member! lol This is actually the first internet forum that I have joined and it is an educational experience in itself! If I had just joined this org site and I was just starting to listen to P's music, I think I would be really driven away by all the negativity! Fortunately, I'm past that! But the org is fun, fantastic, and frustrating all at the same time! For new and old fans! lol

I was in 8th grade and Purple Rain came on TV late one night. I just knew about Prince, I wasn't into the music yet. I sat down in the darkness of my living room staring at the screen. I was blown away by the look of the movie. The ruffles, that purple motorcycle, and the hair. Other than the movie, I could resonate with the music especially when Doves Cry. It fit my family situation at the time. So Prince really helped me through some hard times.

I was 5 and in a record store with my dad. I saw the rave album and he looked really interesting to my 5 year old self so I said "dad who's that?" and he said "oh..that's prince." So I begged him to buy it for me and I've loved prince ever since.

I am with you. I have always been into music. First time I heard Prince I was hooked, but didn't know who he was.

I was about 8 and my brother was playing For U. I was sitting outside his door and the title track came on and I was mesmerized that someone could do all that with their voice (gimme a break people I was only 8).

I wanted to mimic him.

Loved his music ever since......always listening for that mesmerizing moment.

there was this um video show on B.E.T. years ago.

i was like 5 and there was a man barely clothed coming out of a tub naked. it was the freakest shit i have ever seen in my life. for years i wanted to figure out who the mysterious man was. sure enough fast forward to 2004 my sucky life was starting to get a little bit better and i see the video for"When Doves Cry" and i am at the age where i understand everything that is going on in it...still scares the shit out of me. i live in michigan where everything basically sucks and this was during my"Anita Baker" phase. i fell in love with prince's music the minute i heard"Adore" i thought it was one of the most beautiful songs ever written and i for reason thought that was on"Musicology" didnt find out until recently that it was"Chaos and Disorder"(i was about 17 years off). I have not heard his early albums like"For You" And "Dirty Mind".Almost every song that Prince has written has been basically...my theme. i didnt get into finding out about his life and relationships until very recently. he's suffered a lot of horrible things and to come back from that and be strong is amazing. he writes about love knowing he's lost his love. "Purple Rain" is one of my favorite movies cause Appolonia was like totally hot and morris was so cute and little but funny. the guy from the mod squad was in too. Fast forward to 2010 um still in my own mess horribly irl and not planning to get 20ten. um favorite album right now i'm listening to is"Emancipation" and that's on youtube. i love this site cause i have met a lot of good people who have been listening to him since"Soft and Wet". plus the global response from people is amazing he's got fans in paris and spain and croatia. he is well loved all around the world which is a far cry from his beginnings. he is inspiration to me and everything i believe in. so there you have it 17 and fan since 2004 from detroit and proud of it.

At 16, I was bored of my metalhead roots and started looking into more mainstream stuff, and I realized I'd never heard even a single note from this Prince weirdo I kept hearing about. He won me over within the first minute of Let's Go Crazy.

Heard Little Red Corvette on the radio in 83 and became intrigued.

Confiscated my sisters copy of 1999 album and became addicted to the 1st 3 songs. THEN I flipped the record over and became mesmorized by the other two. Before I knew it I had become a 13 year old obsessed with 1999. I played that record to DEATH.

THEN Purple Rain the album and then the movie came out the following year. That sealed the deal...became a fan for life.

I was a BIGGGGGGGGGGGGGG Michael Jackson fan for like 7 months on 2008-2009. then i keep reading articles about MJ and Prince, like Mj is sometime jeously at Prince work, and some articles about Michael Jackson ruled the 80's but his rivial was Prince, if it wasn't for MJ Prince would be on top. whenever i read those articles i get mad like saying, man MJ is way better then Prince on music, live, etc. soo one time again i was reading about who was better in the 80's MJ or Prince. ( i knew some Prince music from the radio, like the big hits, i knew he was good but not better than MJ) so then i decide to listen to Prince music, i download music his music, like 7 songs i knew from the radio, i use to download now i buy albums and songs from Itunes. i was hooked big time from his music, i said to myself wow the music sounds different then MJ. then i was a fan of his. the song that hook me to become a Prince fan was Little Red Corvete, and thats when i stop listen to MJ songs for awhile now, i am 17 years old tooo.

Of course I have always known about Prince but the year I acutually became a fan was in May 2004 when he did an unplugged show to promote his musicology album on MTV. I remember he started playing around with the audiance and then he began singing little bits of old songs like I could never take the place of your man, then he asked the audiance "remember that that from high school?" and they all cherred. He then said "Well this is what I remember from high school" Then he started singing Sweet Thing by Chaka Khan, he just blew me away with his voice, the guitar, everything. Unfortunately he turned the mike around for the audiance to sing the rest of the song but I was already sold - there was no going back from that moment. Through out the whole week that one line he sang of Sweet Thing was just going through my mind. I think HMV made a fortune that summer from all the Prince CD's and DvD's I bought.

I could watch that acustic bit over and over again....nobody tell Prince he gets his own lyrics wrong though smile [Edited 8/3/10 6:11am]

My Cousin Ray was a drummer and used to practice by playing over funk records of the time, mostly Rick James and Parliment. One day i was spending the night and i heard him playing over Soft and Wet, and for the first time i noticed a new poster in his room-huge afro, big gold letters..PRINCE. That was pretty much it from there, each release drew me closer and Dirty Mind pretty much coincided with my hormones. MJ was a given, like family because i cant remember him not being there but Prince was something different. MJ still kinda belonged to my parents generation and Prince was totally ours. I always consider the two complimentary universes that utilize the same resources with different impacts.

I had enjoyed all the hits from Controversy and 1999, and even recall hearing Uptown once or twice, especially at parties. But I never really got into the whole Purple Rain hype. That was UNTIL........ a (girl) friend at the time, gave me a tape of PR and told me to listen to The Beautiful Ones. Which I did for the 1st time with headphones on, and when I did, I farken died.

I liked another girl at the time, and yet here was this friend asking ME, "what's it going to be babe...... do you want me, cause i want you!". eek cool

The song was AMAZING (and still is), and I never looked back after hearing it.

Had the entire back catalogue by the time ATWIAD came out, and every album was just as good as the previous.

I live in Australia, and being a P fan here was like a "where's wally pic".

Live shows where non-existant, but the P community was strong, and kept us going all that time till we finally saw him in 1990. Then we became fans all over again. smile

BTW. Lisa was her name, and she knows its all her fault.

wink

Well see....it started a LONG time ago when I was around 8 or 9...somethin like that. Child of divorced parents, I got to go visit my mom every other weekend. One particular weekend I was staying with her and I found a VHS tape that looked interesting. I was already a huge little Michael Jackson fan, so I dunno, Maybe the geri curl caught my eye lol but yeah, Purple Rain. I seriously can remember watchin Purple Rain and like tellin myself, my little 8 or 9 year old self that I was gonna do that. I was gonna be a singer like "The Kid" lol Well years went by and Prince has just always stayed in my life. I got really into him on a deeper level when I was about 13 or 14. I bought my favorite album to date, "Emancipation" and saw him with different eyes. Through the years I've bought all of his albums, and I've always kept up to date with him. My musical messiah.

But that's the point in The org...you should always come ready to contribute your opinion (whether it's welcome or not lol ) and not absorb those of others -sone of the, shall we say, Stalkers on here are only too willing to thrust the opinion that you MUST love everything Prince does and that there is no best Prince track/album because that would mean that another is inferior.

No amount of positivity is going to change my mind that ONA and TRC are, on the whole, shit.

But like you I was a member for many years before Prince invented the Internet and I'd heard of the org or even had the net (apparently I've been polluting the air here for 9 years) and I'm still here after the net is officially dead.

I first became aware of him circa Dirty Mind... UK pop mag Smash Hits printed a short article with a photo. I thought it was a pic of Sylvester at first lol

I first heard him when 1999 was a hit for him first time round in the UK and I loved it.

Then Purple Rain happened... that's when I (as did many others in Europe) first sat up and began to REALLY take notice. I was a bit resistant at first as I usually go in the opposite direction when faced with huge media hype but over the next couple of years I began to notice the James Brown and Parliament influences in his music to the point where I began collecting his back catalogue in 1987 after previously just buying the occasional 7"

Right there with the two of you ... the afro days!

'78 - I used to listen to my parents' radio whilst I sat silently on the phone w/whatever her name was then. "Soft and Wet" came on and it was such a different sound. I also hung out at the local wrecka stow, so I asked someone working there (fine-ass Stephanie McCann) who sang S&W. She pulled out the For You LP and played it in the store. Like BklynDiamond, I was all in after hearing the title track. He sounded like a choir of angels.

My first time seeing him was on Dick Clark's American Bandstand when Dez Dickerson and Andre' Cymone were still in the band. By this time (circa Prince), he had the perm, and I can remember him being almost afraid while speaking to Dick Clark. It was then that I learned how he played EVERYTHING on his albums. He did two songs, "I Wanna Be Your Lover," and one o my all-time faves, "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" Lemme tell you, when he (and Dez) finished the guitar work on "Why You Wanna ...," Prince could've asked me to light my hair on fire -- I would have been burned in 4 places!

I was a HUGE Earth, Wind & Fire fan, so it was hard for Prince to steal the title of my favorite artist, but by the time Controversy was released, he had supplanted the Elements of the Universe in my #1 spot and has been there since. I haven't liked everything, but there's no musician I respect and admire more.
