I always thought the point of the song was the music was erotic and we can funk it till the dawn. Rather than the normal sexual refrence of fucking till the dawn. Do you understand me? I always thought he was using the title erotic city as a cliche or metaphor for music. Almost like he did with Tamborine.

You guys are making me work with my answers lol. I don't know about the cherry pie but your name is motherfunka. I just think hes using this song as a metaphor the same way you use your screen name.

I have always heard funk and I still hear funk. The song has been played on the radio unedited a gazillion times. You cannot say fuck on the radio.

I'm almost certain it was in some official songbook with the word "funk", I always heard funk as well.. obviously some cheeky wordplay either way

It could've been "funk", who knows? But I guess what I'm getting at is they replaced the c and put n in it. "Funk" can definitely be used as a sexual euphemism (Marvin's "Funk Me" from In Our Lifetime).

Either way, I love the full version of this. The version he put on HITS undermines the great funk of that song.

I think that funk and fuck are both mixed together, sort of like in Little Red Corvette when Prince says " a body like yours ought to be jail/chains...."

Pretty sure it's "fuck" since there is a legal precedent of a radio station being fined for playing the uncensored record back in the day.

Yeah I think so too. Because in the full version I heard them both. I think I heard more of a "fuck" in Prince's verse where he's like:

"We can fuck/funk until the dawn
How I wish you were my dame."
