Stanley Kubrick's highly underrated masterpiece.

I think the movie where Prince draw his influence from was The Idolmaker, as far as his image and the mystique around it was concerned.

I can see it as an influence for the D&P era, but not really anything before then shrug

Most definitely. There are parts of Purple Rain that are clearly influenced by this movie nod
