George Clinton Influence on 20TEN?

"Whatever skin you're in," seems an obvious nod.

And the singing sound of "Yoda" himself; even though I've never heard Yoda sound high pitched.. Basically, like an outer space homage to Parliament.

And some of the general loopiness.

Not saying the whole CD itslef is "George-centric." But those 2 little snippets stuck out.

Y'all feeling any P-Funk in the CD?

i have just about every pfunk cd they made. I dont hear it. sorry. Pfunk was so much more complex than prince. Not knocking Prince but his music is simple. Thats what makes him great though. He has always been very simplistic which has worked great throughout his career. Pfunks grooves were the bomb though!! Totally different types of music. Pfunk is funky even when they are trying to rock!! 20ten sounds like it is an attempt to be funky but falls way short. Just my opinion

It's really just that 2 small parts.

"Living, jiving and digging the skin he's in," taken from Parliament.

And the whole outer space background singing, a little like Trombipuulation.

It's just a small nod to the PFunk, methinks.

I look at Pfunk as Funk artist. I look at Prince as a Pop/Rock artist. Prince can do an R&B song(scandalous, do me baby, call my name etc) but really cant do an R&B "album". It seems on the ones he has tried they really suck(new power soul, mpls, 20ten for example). When he is at his best is when he does the pop/rock genre(1999, purple rain, diamonds and pearls, the gold experience, etc). As far as funk its the same way(NPS, 20ten, MPLS) seem to be attempts at funk but they miss the mark. Its weird but he really cant pull it off. Pfunk is funk!! Rick James is funk!! Both do it better than ANY Prince "funk album". With that being said I like Prince much better but its because of his pop/rock element. HE does crank out some good funk jams from time to time. I really dug La La LA but he cant seem to put them together in a full album when he tries. You can even compare it to the new Jesse Johnson album. Verbal Penetration is a very strong funk album. It was put together very nicely and is much better than 20ten as far as funk. I hear LOTS of pfunk elements is that. Not quite as good as Pfunk of course but I hear more Pfunk in that album than 20ten. With that note also Jesse PICK up that GUITAR!! I would love to hear him do a blues rock album. He can pull it off!! Bare My Naked Soul was a GREAT step in the right direction. Lets explore that some more!! Thats my two cents on theis subject. Now everyone can torch me for speaking my thoughts!!

Another ridiculous myopic view of what Funk is. I have every Pfunk album and yes, they exude a certain type of funk; heck, they mastered funk! But what Prince did with Funk was pick up Pfunk's mantle and spin it his way; the same way he did for rock/pop. It's not a beat, a lyric but an attitude, not entirely unlike rock. Pure Funk examples from Prince have been mentioned on the org, but I'll dare to repeat:

Strange Relationship (hynotic funk)

Erotic City (obvious grimy funk)

Head (just one of the dirtiest funk tracks ever)

Sexuality

When Doves Cry (his venture into a completely new world of funk/pop he created)

Alphabet St., New Position, I Wonder U, Pheromone, Tamborine, DMSR (layers of funk), Le Grind, Cindy C., Bob George, 2 Nigs, Billy Jack Bitch, 3121, Shockadelica, La La la, He He hee (obvious nod to G.Clinton), an early version of We Can Funk, Thieves..., Housequake, It... blah blah blah

There may not be stomps, pedals, warped vocals, complicated arrangements, dog barks, but it's definitely Funk. His way.

And as always, it's just my opinion.

Always has been a P-Funk influence. Prince himself acknowledged it on 'Erotic City'. Of late, 'Dance 4 Me', 'Ol Skool Company', parts of 'Stickly like Glue' and 'Laydown' seem to have carried the P-Funk gene.

Also remember, George Clintons rock funk group Funkadelic, and Prince and George's duet 'Paradigm'. Also there were two GC solo albums on Paisley Park, the best of which is 'Hey man, smell my finger ... '. Despite statements to the contrary regarding no Prince involvement he can clearly be heard on 'Get Satisfied'.

I've said it here before that the uniqueness of Prince is that he uses a sound as an instrument. P funk, etc becomes a guitar, a piano.. You may think that I am giving too much credit. Prince's originality is combination rather than creation

"Everybody Loves Me," has some pure P-Funk sound in it.

then again I am very biased when it comes to funk. I have played in a funk band for 25 YEARS and have a funk collection out of this world so I am very biased. To me Prince can be funky but he is not a funk artist. Noone will convince me oytherwise either. sorry

Prince never fashioned himself a funk artist, but he is a child of the funk generation and you can hear it in his work. A lot of his B-Sides in this prime years were used to expose his more funky tracks that if put on the album would have pushed the catagory out of pop/rock. The masters when talking about Prince's funk do credit him with having his own unique funk, and that is a compliment worth more than what we think of him.

Why is it only Prince gets accused of "Not being funk" "Not being Jazz" while you have drippy wet arses out there like James Taylor Quartet etc making a perfectly good living from such genres with absolutely no recourse to these accusations? I think anybody saying that Prince is not at the very least competent in these genres are probably on the extreme side of pretentious

Another negative comment on Prince. I 2 have every p-funk album out there, I 2 happen 2 b a massive Parliament/Funkadelic fan and I 2 know the funk and believe me Prince is damn 2 funky

esp LIVE. I would love Prince 2 release a triple album of funk just 2 shut his critics up.

anyway Prince is a versatile artist and he created his own sound by appreciating & using his influences 4 his sound. There's nothing wrong.

If George Clinton & Miles Davis found him funky then those who oppose his funk r just uneducated in music & the FUNK.
