Wow!

I love the intimate vibe. I damn near shouted my kids ears off when I heard "Purple Music" disbelief loved the Sylvester cover even though I don't care much for the background singers, but glad they didn't oversing it.

All n' all, great set.

First you open www.google.com

Type "FLAC" in the search box and hit "I'm Feeling Lucky".

The rest is up to you.

A lot of this sounds like an amateur cover band playing at a bar. Not too impressive going on here. His aftershows at the indigo were a lot better than this. Kiss is pretty cool and a much much better arrangement of the song than I am used to. Beautiful Strange is good too. I wanna know who played the keyboard solo(s) on Stratus because they were dreadful.

Miss You was a drunken karaoke rendition. Dreamer was disappointingly short.

Must have been fun to see live.

Well, it's out there.

3-disc set. Great art.

"Beautiful Strange" sounded great (LOL at the guy in the audience yelling out "17 DAYS! 17 DAYS" before the song started.

"Purple Music"....whoa!!

"Future Soul Song" on piano was incredible....is there anyone still doubting that this song is a bonafide Prince classic up there with his best work after hearing this version?

Haven't listened to the entire show yet, but getting through it all and loving it smile

Yo..... Thanks for starting this thread... Loving it!

Squirrelgrease and Ufoclub both covered this subject pretty much with their replies, but I'd just like to add a little extra.

No one involved in putting these releases together makes any money from them - it's done for the appreciation of P's music and for the benefit of the fans. So are FBG depriving P of revenue? Well not in my opinion. If these live performances were to be officially released, the same people who have downloaded the free version are the same people who would immediatly go out and buy the official version - let's face it, these releases only really appeal to the hardcore fans who buy all of P's music.

These releases may not have P's seal of approval*, but the way I see it labels like FBG and 4DaFunk have helped keep interest in his music going amongst the fan community, especially in times of lacklustre 'official' output. Box 'O' Chocolates in particular helped remind people of his genius - it also came out around the same time that P released Purple & Gold/Cause & Effect/Hot Summer, and so helped off-set the widespread disapointment those official releases caused.

In fact I'd go so far as to say if it hadn't been for the various boots that have been released over the years, P's fanbase would not be as large as it is today.

Oh, and with regards to the artwork, while I can't speak for other labels, I know that for the most part the artworks for FBG & 4DaFunk are designed to complement his music while at the same time adding a bit of individuality to the release (and not just using an exsisting promo shot with a bit of text over it).

*Although let's not forget - even P admitted to owning a few James Brown bootlegs many years ago.

in my honest opinion, i think that anyone's music, once played, or recorded and released, automatically becomes the property of the collective, public property if you will.

the music industry has been distracted by ego-driven copyright and revenue claims, to the point where it's literally choked the life out of the industry.

from record companies to the artists they 'employ', to indie artists and amateurs attempting to make a contribution,

none of them, in my opinion, can see how much they cut off their own nose despite their face, by having such a massive problem with unauthorised releases.

so in that sense, i can easily support any re-release of an existing recording, with or without the artist's or company's consent.

on the other hand, i'm so conflicted on this issue regarding the use of Prince's artwork, symbol, use of name, and someone re-mastering his work,

that i wonder if i'm merely empathizing with his ego, the part of any artist who'd like to feel their personal opinion is at least worth something to those re-releasing their work.

but i understand how the conversation would go: Prince can we release this. No. and where would we be then?

hence the decision to release unauthorized recordings, including his symbol logo, without his consent.

at least everyone gets to hear something they wouldnt otherwise hear and Prince's 'live gigs' become more than just a one night stand.

i can also appreciate how Prince might not understand his own value, or what it means to fans to hear his processes, especially live, and how 'bootleggers' might be doing him a favor

by releasing this stuff to people instead of Prince having to go to all the trouble of either selling it or giving it away via his own site.

i'm trying to narrow down what my real issue with this bootleg scenario is,

so maybe if i just state what initially unnerved me about it, i might be able to move forward from there.

it was when i saw the artwork. not that it's bad artwork. on the contrary, its very tastefully done.

its the use of his symbol. it feels to me that the very essence of Prince's identity has been hi-jacked, and his artistic integrity is completely ignored in favor of the 'better taste' of the bootlegger.

that being said, i dont see the harm in re-releasing his MUSIC if it is left untouched, and is being given away for free.

if anyone is charging money for bootlegs, then that's a different story.

i know this all probably sounds very confusing, because like i said at the beginning of this post, in my heart of hearts i'm a believer in collective music.

but to totally rip an artists core ID, in this case Prince's symbol, well that doesnt feel right to me.

i dont know who FBG is, so please forgive me if my comments seem insensitive, but i also wonder what the real motivation behind releasing bootlegs is.

is it a pure motivation, as people say, to just get this music in the hands of fans for free?

or is it about the attention the bootlegger gets? or is it both?

sorry for going on about this, i realise Prince has ripped-off more than a few people in his time, from music, to credits, to costumes,

but in the end i think it's about respecting the artist's integrity at the same time as acknowledging music as a communal and collective breath.

tough call, but i'll let you guys enjoy your new download and the rest of your discussion.

cheers heart

this too shall pass

i can't get with any of this shit. none of it's new lol. none of his new material ("sticky like glue..." dancing jig). the same tired old songs he always plays and a bunch of the same covers with his lame back up singers doing the whole show, damn near talk to the hand. not even 2 minutes of a 10 minute lost jam like purple music and a drag ass anti-climactic take on another personal fave, 2045: radical man is all i get. fuck that shit arrow. this band has been whack since o2. it's like they bring the lazy old vegas performer in prince out and i don't like it at all stoned

Fantastic, just fantastic. I've enjoyed this and 'Viage'. Great stuff from FBG.

I didn't keep the recent main show boots, rubbish sound, boring setlists. I guess aftershows are the only shows worth attending nowadays.

Ok, i'm gonna stick my neck out here and say that upon hearing the 1st disk, I am not impressed (so far).

Maybe my expectaions were too high from reading the reports here beforehand.

To me disk one sounded sloppy (performance wise). I appreciate that aftershows are more relaxed but some of this was mundane (2045?! disbelief). Im all for improvisation but let it go somewhere. It felt like they wanted to wrap that one up before it started. Also, Seems like Prince was having an off night on the guitar. Im hoping he warms up on the second disk.

On disk 1 alone, i would say they sound like decent'ish club band with a poor male vocalist. Prince's voice has gone talk to the hand (a reason why he gives so many numbers to shelby etc.. i guess).

I got my fingers crossed that the second disk kicks my arse.

Ok... the shit storm can begin. Just remeber folks that its just an opinion smile

The stuff starts at disk two and then on nod I think disk one was mostly his back-up singers opening for him.

Its in disk three where you'll wish the show was abit longer.

I stick my neck out there too, and say this is the best intimate setting he did since "Small Club" lol(Aside from the power trio/congo room shows he did).

2 bad prince doesn't appreciate everybody singing purple music back 2 him and realize he should release the song

(if it hasn't already been posted somewhere else)he should look at the black crowes website and see that they sell all their shows in mp3 and flac 4 easy downloading. the fans r happy, no bootlegging and he makes all the money, like he wants.
