Not so much a problem as a preference. I find for my syle of playing often enough, i will have trouble tuning the guitar properly, Im self taught and cant read music.. many tutorials on tuning offer little help. They often describe the method of tuning, which helps very little if the musician is having trouble comparing the tones and determining if the string is sharp, flat, or in tune.

Like I said though, it comes down to preference, but mostly I choose either the low E or the high E strings (strings 1 and 6, the highest and lowest). I've found that classical guitarists seem to more commonly use the high E, while electric players tend to more often use the low E. For now, I use whatever is easiest for me to tune properly (or half properly) confused

My Dad is a musician (pianist)..He can tune his piano by ear and tune my guitar via his piano. But I hate 2 bug him every time I need a tune. The electronic ones are not always acurate neutral

Not bragging but I can do anything Prince can on a lead guitar or bass and would totally take him out on keyboards.. I am a better musician than Prince however I accept that he is a better poet/businessman than me.

I think you are a pro musician (would you want to record tracks as part of a song?) but Prince also made up his guitar parts (often live or in rehearsals)! I think that qualitfies him as a genius musician.

Prince a genius musician? falloff

I respect ur opinion my friend but thats really not true from my POV

Put it this way, U know that saying 'in the land of the blind the 1 eyed man is king'...Thats Prince. Basically 99% of ppl think he's a musical genius not cos he is but cos 99% of ppl can't play instruments like he can. For the 1% like me, Hendrix, Vai, Santana and my cousin Michael who can...basically we respect him but know how 2 do it 2 so no big deal and definately no genius lol

Sorry but its comical. Its like being a 'magician' in the audience watching a magician on stage. The whole audience are like "ooooh ahhh wow! he's a genius" all except the other magician in the audience who knows how he does the 'illusion'..cos thats all music is my friend, we musicians are magicians and the sounds we make are an illusion 2 transport u 2 our manipulation of ur emotions..ur not really suddenly feeling sad, happy, horny, excited etc when we play BUT we know the right key in our instrument 2 tap in2 the right emotion in U.

Remember the matrix 1 when Neo couldn't read the green screen and thought every1 was really a genius for being able 2.. lol, later Neo kicked ass just by practising.

I say 2 every1..go pick up an instrument, work it till ur fingers bleed and u 2 could be a ... 'genius' lol

I don't know if you're getting why I think he's a musical genius. Playing a instrument intircately well does not = musical genius EVER in my book. That's like saying that the person with the best knowledge of vocabulary is the best writer. That's not true.

It's about what you choose to communicate with sound. In my 20+ years experience working with musicians to try to score things or add parts to my productions... most of the trained players offer absolutely nothing of value and often cannot even come up with anything remotely remarkable` (there are a few that can). But the self taught musicians who don't know proper technique or notation... they more often then not, can come up with something cool.

It's not about how good you play the instrument, because you could make a machine to play the instrument, it's about how and what you make the instrument sing. Prince's choices outscope most all the supposed greats. He can put together a track like "Moviesta"r that sounds like nothing I've heard, and to this day retains a strong mood whenever I hear it's dreamy organ lines, bassline, and subtle touches throughout. I wish there was an instrumental. I don't think anyone you listed has the ability to sculpt a sound that startlingly cool to my ears.

I listen to music the way some people look at paintings. There are beautiful old fashioned landscapes. And then there are conceptual contemporary paintings. Prince can jump to the latter category with music, and jump back to old school ground if he wants. And he does so in ways that are not paralleled by other pop artists that I know of. That's why I'd say he's a musical genius. nothing to do with playing technique in itself.

No matter how well someone can play a solo originally performed in a song by Prince, he made the solo and fit it to the song originally. That's why he's the genius.

U make some very good points there, from the soul. I respect that.

People call me genius and as U can see I am clearly not one so it just makes me weary of the word but the way u explained how u see it is cool. respect.

On another note, do y'all know how much ass I,ve turned inside out from being able 2 play a little good golly miss molly...Glen Quagmire aint got nothing on me when its time 2 get the draws:-)

Why would you even bother to play Purple Rain, and then duplicate Prince's solo on it, if you didn't hold it and him in high esteem?

I agree genius is an often overused term, but for Prince it's as close to right for anyone, dead or alive.

I'm gonna put it real straight forward. You're playing somebody elses compositions, moderately well. Jazz musicians would clown on you. For a number of reasons, actually, but mostly because you're just aping other peoples styles. Classical musicians would hand you the sheet music for something that's actually difficult to play. But most importantly, for me anyway, you loose nearly all the respect that I COULD HAVE given your playing by trying to proclaim Prince's lack of musical genius. Ummm, then why are you playin' his shit? confused The mans influence on the popular music of the latter portion of the 20th Century is undeniable. He has more feeling in his little finger than I got from any of your playing. And whether you understand why, or not, he IS widely considered a genius by players, writers and producers in all genres of music. As soon as you've written, arranged and produced as many incredible songs as he has, we'll talk again. So like, never, basically.

I merely said as some1 who plays as well if not better than Prince I don't see what all the fuss is about but I guess 4 the majority of people who cannot even play chopsticks on the piano or wind cries mary's easy ass riff on a guitar...he would seem so. from my POV he is a very good entertainer but what he does technically...there's no 'strange magical powers to it'...trust me, U or any1 could play like that if u practiced enough. neutral

Veering back to the original topic; at least it is obvious that you yourself play one wind instrument well: your mouth. As for your finger work: you make up on the qwerty what you might lack on the 6 string.

however, if I can play as many instruments as I do as well as I do and not even be a musician..but Prince plays them night and day and isn't up 2 my technical or expressive standards then what does that tell U? I am clearly more gifted, naturally gifted for the art. im not dogging Prince, he's an adequate musician but U need 2 C my friend Marlon on the guitar...then u'd know what time it is. granted Prince is good at marketing and getting money out of his 'fanatics' but he's no Hendrix...sorry.

Not at all. Why would I want to cuss? It's not like you were offensive on your part. Just a little too full of yourself to my taste. You might argue that lesser players like Prince are also full of themselves, but then they have other people being full of them too.

That's racist. Is racism allowed on Prince.org? U can clearly see that I am black from my videos and U called me a monkey. Does Prince.org actually allow this kind of racism? has anyone reported it?

I've been nothing but respectful 2 all posters and have throughout said that I respect every1's opinion, I feel your racism or ANY racism is uncalled for. I cannot believe the moderators would allow racism on prince.org

So many people are banned for lesser crimes than racism on prince.org

That's racist. Is racism allowed on Prince.org? U can clearly see that I am black from my videos and U called me a money. Does Prince.org actually allow this kind of racism? has anyone reported it?

walk away wink

all that matters is that you enjoy what you do.

music is such a wonderful gift.

it can be tempting to compare what you do with other musicians, but there's really no need.

there'll never be anyone like you, just like there'll never be anyone like Prince, or anyone else.

we're all individuals and as long as you can feel good about yourself and your talents that's all that matters.

this too shall pass

Thank you and i respect your opinion.

I may sound arrogant to some or even a bit off key on my views of Prince but is that any reason to be called a monkey? Racism.

I was just stating my opinion as some1 who plays a little that Prince isn't that remarkable when U can do it yourself.

Same argument could be said for anyone who can do all of MJ's moves...MJ after you can dance like him would no longer be a genius.

But I am very hurt to have experienced RACISM on Prince.org

Wake up children, dance the dance electric... there isn't much time.... who farted? whofarted ...was it u? disbelief

U call that cussin' ? lol

Not at all. Why would I want to cuss? It's not like you were offensive on your part. Just a little too full of yourself to my taste. You might argue that lesser players like Prince are also full of themselves, but then they have other people being full of them too.

U make some good points. In my experience most musicians are 'full of themselves'..It kind of comes with knowing u can do something others cant..or at least wont cos their not prepared 2 put in the practice.

But thank you for your comments.

I've been nothing but respectful 2 all posters and have throughout said that I respect every1's opinion, I feel your racism or ANY racism is uncalled for. I cannot believe the moderators would allow racism on prince.org

So many people are banned for lesser crimes than racism on prince.org

[Edited 7/30/10 7:30am]

I have no idea of your race because I didn't watch your stupid videos. rolleyes

Have you ever been to a zoo? Monkeys imitate people. That is all I meant. (And that's clear from the first sentence of my post about biting on other peoples' work.) You didn't get pissed off when someone else accused you of "aping other peoples' styles," now did you?

Maybe you oughta just quit while you're behind.

chill pill

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I know that you understood perfectly, but for the other readers who might still be following this thread:

I think the word monkey was used to mean "someone who copies others (in a silly way)". Nothing racist there but someone looking for it.

no need to feel hurt, Genesia didnt mean it that way wink

i'm not sure anyone can do anything like anyone else

no two people in the whole universe are the same at anything

like snowflakes we're all unique

but i do hear you loud n clear and like i said, if you feel good about what ur doing musically, thats all that matters.

i know how it feels to get excited and toot ur own horn, but it tends to set you up as a target for inflammatory comments.

be wise brother and pull it in. wink
